Signs that close a season
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 11, he sorts the signs by where they fall in each season.
The first sign of each season is cardinal. Ptolemy calls them solstice and equinox signs, since the season turns as the Sun enters them. The second sign is solid, or fixed. The season is at its height there. The third sign is double-bodied. Modern books call it mutable.
Ptolemy names the four: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. He says they sit between the solid signs and the turning signs. They “share, as it were, at end and beginning, the natural properties of the two states of weather.”

In a reading, a double-bodied Moon is quick to change. It feels one thing and then the next. It can hold two moods at once. In this couple, both partners work that way. So the pair has no anchor by mode. Someone has to choose to be the one who stays put.
Why a square between two mutable signs
Ptolemy calls the trine and sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition not, because they join signs of opposite kinds. Gemini is a masculine sign and Pisces a feminine one. These are old labels for signs that alternate around the wheel. They say nothing about the person.
Every square joins two signs of the same mode. Here, both are mutable. The square also crosses elements. Gemini is air and Pisces is water. Among all 78 Moon pairs, this is the only square between air and water that is also mutable. The other air and water squares join cardinal signs, as with Libra and Cancer, or fixed signs, as with Aquarius and Scorpio.
Read as a symbol, air and water mix into mist. Talk meets mood. The Gemini Moon wants to name the problem. The Pisces Moon wants the problem to be felt first. A square does not mean the two cannot meet. It means they meet at an angle, and both must turn a little.
The rulers sit in each other’s weak spots
Each sign has a ruling planet. Mercury rules Gemini. Jupiter rules Pisces, by the old list that Ptolemy and Lilly use. The Moon has no rank in either sign, so each Moon leans on that ruler.
William Lilly gives the weak signs in Christian Astrology, from 1647. Mercury is in detriment in Pisces, which means it sits across from its own home. Pisces is also Mercury’s fall, its lowest place. Jupiter is in detriment in Gemini.
So each Moon’s ruler is weak in the other partner’s sign. The Gemini Moon’s helper, Mercury, loses its footing in Pisces. The Pisces Moon’s helper, Jupiter, loses its footing in Gemini.

How close is the square?
Two Moons in these signs form a square by sign. That does not mean they sit 90 degrees apart. The real gap runs from 60 to 120 degrees, depending on where each Moon falls.
The Moon spreads evenly through each sign. So the share of couples near an exact square is simple to work out.

A few couples form a softer aspect across the sign border instead. About 7.1 in 100 sit within 8 degrees of an exact sextile or trine. That happens when one Moon is early in its sign and the other is late.
New moons and full moons
Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is near a new moon. Others are born with the Moon in the sign across from the Sun. That is near a full moon.
These shares shift a little by sign, and the shift is real. The Earth moves slowest around the Sun in early July. So the Sun lingers in the summer signs.

A Gemini Moon at a new moon needs the Sun in Gemini, in early summer, when the Sun is slow. A Pisces Moon at a full moon needs the Sun in Virgo, in late summer. So both Moons get a small push from the slow summer Sun, each in its own way.

Can you trust your Moon pair?
The Moon spends about 54.6 hours in each sign on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date alone gives two possible Moon signs.
Free tools set the birth time to noon. Over the years 1600 through 2400, that guess gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. For a couple, both guesses must be right. How we counted
Every figure here comes from one table of 78 Moon pairs, built for this site. It covers every moment from the year 1600 to the year 2400, in the tropical zodiac, as seen from the Earth. Two separate routes built it.
The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Moon sign change to a tenth of a second and summed the exact time in each sign. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris, on an hourly grid set half an hour apart from the first. No random draws were used. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time.
The two routes agree within 0.05 points on every Moon figure. That check sets a limit. Each Moon sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of all time. The gap between signs is smaller than the gap between routes. So we do not rank Moon pairs by rarity. Any two different Moon signs meet in about 1 couple in 72.
What the evidence says about love signs
The largest test of sign matching used the Sun, not the Moon. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas studied the 2001 census of England and Wales. He looked at about 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in filling in the forms.
No census records birth times, so no one has run that test on Moons. Treat this pair as a lens for talk, not a verdict.
