An Aries Moon and a Gemini Moon sit two signs apart. Astrologers call that gap a sextile, and it is one of the few links the oldest texts call friendly. So on paper this is a good match. We looked closer, with the old rules and with eight centuries of Moon positions. The sextile holds up, with two catches. Fewer than half of these couples have it in exact degrees. And some have a square, the tense link, hidden under the friendly label.
Before we start, a clear warning. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Moon sign pair makes a couple last. Read this as a way to name two styles of feeling, not as a forecast.
What we are comparing
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon held at your birth. Astrologers read it as your inner life: your first reaction, your comfort, the way you show care. Your Sun sign is a separate thing, the one from the daily horoscope.
Here, one partner has the Moon in Aries and the other has it in Gemini. Aries is a fire sign, ruled by Mars. Gemini is an air sign, ruled by Mercury. The sextile, as Ptolemy saw it
An aspect is a set angle between two points in a chart. Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer who wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century, used four of them. The sextile is two signs apart, or 60 degrees. The square is three apart. The trine is four apart. The opposition is six apart.
He sorted them by a simple rule. Half the signs are masculine and half are feminine, and they take turns around the wheel. The sextile and the trine always join two signs of the same kind. So Ptolemy called them harmonious. The square and the opposition join signs of opposite kinds, and he called them hard.
Aries and Gemini are both masculine signs. Fire and air are the two masculine elements. So this pair fits Ptolemy’s idea of harmony. In his book on marriage, he wrote that couples do well when the Sun and Moon of the two charts are in trine or sextile. Modern Moon matching is a slim version of that rule.
The fire and air pairing has its own old image. Air feeds fire. The flame needs air to grow, and the air is warmed by the flame. Astrologers use that image for a lively couple that lifts each other up.
But how close are the two Moons?
Here is the first catch. A sign is 30 degrees wide, and a sextile is exact only at 60 degrees. Two Moons two signs apart can sit anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees apart. A degree is one part in 360 of the sky.
Astrologers use a margin, called an orb, to decide when an angle counts. We worked out how many Aries and Gemini Moon couples have a sextile within each common orb.

So even with a broad 8 degree orb, most of these couples have a sextile by sign and not by degree. Some astrologers read by whole signs and count every one of them. Others read by degree and count fewer than half. Ask which method a reading uses.
The square under the sextile
Now the second catch. Put an Aries Moon at 1 degree Aries. Put a Gemini Moon at 29 degrees Gemini. The two Moons are 88 degrees apart. By sign they form a sextile. By degree they form a square, the link Ptolemy called hard.
We measured how many couples fall into that case. With an 8 degree orb, 3.56 percent of Aries and Gemini Moon couples have a true square across the sign line. That is about one couple in 28. For those couples, a reader who works in degrees would see tension where the sign chart shows ease.
The reverse case does not happen here. The two Moons are never less than 30 degrees apart, so they can never form a conjunction.
Two Moons with no rank
The old astrologers scored each planet in each sign. They called these scores dignities. William Lilly laid out the full scheme in Christian Astrology, in 1647. The Moon is at home in Cancer and exalted, or at its best, in Taurus.
In Aries and in Gemini, the Moon holds no rank at all. It has no share in the fire signs or the air signs, by day or by night. It rules none of the ten-degree slices of either sign. And the Moon never holds the small ranks called terms. Lilly called a planet in that state peregrine, a guest in a house that is not its own.
So in this couple, both Moons are guests. Each one takes on the style of its host planet. The Aries Moon borrows the drive of Mars. The Gemini Moon borrows the quick mind of Mercury. That is the core of the usual reading.
How the pair plays out
Here is how astrologers read this couple. None of it is proven, but it gives two people words to use.
The Aries Moon reacts with action. It wants to do something about a feeling, right now. The Gemini Moon reacts with words. It wants to talk a feeling through, name it, and look at it from three sides. Both are fast. Neither likes to sit in a heavy mood for long.
That shared speed is the gift of the pair. Days feel full. Plans change on a whim, and nobody minds. A fight blows over by dinner. The Gemini Moon can talk the Aries Moon down, and the Aries Moon can push the Gemini Moon to stop talking and act.
The friction comes from the gaps. The Aries Moon can feel that the Gemini Moon talks too much and commits too little. The Gemini Moon can feel that the Aries Moon rushes in before the facts are in. When stress runs high, the Aries Moon gets blunt and the Gemini Moon gets slippery. Then each one sees the worst side of the other.
A few habits help.
Split thinking from doing. Agree that talk comes first, then one clear step. The Gemini Moon gets its say, and the Aries Moon gets its move.
Keep things fresh. Both Moons get bored fast. New places and new projects feed the pair better than routine.
Say the feeling, not just the plan. Fast couples can skip the soft part. A plain “I felt hurt” does more than a clever line.
A Gemini Moon leans toward the new Moon
This pair has one more trait that we could measure. It concerns the phase of the Moon at birth.
Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is near a new Moon, the dark start of the monthly cycle. Others are born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun, near a full Moon.
These shares are not equal across signs. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest then. It lingers in Gemini and Cancer, and the fast Moon catches it there more. So among Gemini Moons, 8.45 percent also have the Sun in Gemini. Only Cancer Moons score higher, at 8.48 percent. Among Aries Moons, the figure is 8.21 percent.
The full Moon side runs the other way. Only 7.95 percent of Gemini Moons have the Sun in Sagittarius, the sign opposite.

Is it really Aries and Gemini?
All of this needs both Moon signs to be right. That is less sure than most people think.
The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days on average. Over the years 1600 to 2400, one pass through a sign lasted 54.6 hours on average, and from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of all days, the Moon changed sign at some point.
Free tools that skip the birth time put your birth at noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair 20.75 percent of the time, about one in five. Only 31.45 percent of couples can know both Moon signs from the dates alone.
A noon error always moves the Moon to a sign next door. So an Aries and Gemini couple could turn out to be Pisces and Gemini, Taurus and Gemini, Aries and Taurus, or Aries and Cancer. The birth certificate settles it.
What the research says
The biggest test of sign matches looked at the Sun, not the Moon. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He studied about 10.3 million married couples. He found no pair of Sun signs that wed more than chance. A small excess of same-sign couples traced back to errors in the data.
A census does not record birth hours, so it cannot give Moon signs. As far as we know, no one has tested Moon pairs on that scale. So the Moon match stays a way to talk, not a proven guide.
How we measured it
We used two routes that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every Moon and Sun sign change from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400, to within a tenth of a second. It then added up the exact time spent in each sign and each pair of signs. The degree counts came from a scan of the Moon once an hour.
The second route used the Swiss Ephemeris, a star table used by many astrology programs. It read the Moon and Sun once an hour, on a grid set half an hour apart from the first. That is more than seven million moments. Neither route used random numbers. The two agree to within 0.05 points on every figure here. We used the tropical zodiac, the one most Western astrologers use.
