Venus in Cancer: The Most Common Venus Sign, by a Hair, and a Guest in the Moon’s House

Cancer here is the fourth sign of the zodiac — the summer sign of the crab, nothing else. This page is about astrology, and about one point in a birth chart. Venus in Cancer means the planet Venus stood in that sign at the hour you were born.

Here is the claim this article defends. Venus in Cancer is a guest, not an owner. Old astrology gives Venus no home and no exaltation in this sign, only small minor shares. Yet Cancer belongs to the Moon, and Venus and the Moon are the two soft lights of the old system. That tension is the whole story, and it has been retold for centuries without anyone checking the numbers. We checked them.

Venus in Cancer is peregrine: what that word means

Old astrology scores each planet by the sign it sits in. The system is called essential dignity: a planet is strong at home, weak in the opposite sign, lifted in one sign, sunk in another.

Venus has five such marks. She rules Taurus and Libra — those are her homes. She falls low in Virgo. She is exiled in Aries and Scorpio, the signs across from her homes. She is lifted in Pisces.

Cancer is on none of those lists. Modern books call a planet with none of these marks peregrine. The word comes from the Latin for foreigner, and it says exactly that: the planet is abroad. It has no house and no major rank there.

This matters, because writers love to call Venus in Cancer a soft, blessed spot. The old sources are more careful. None of them gives Venus a home or an exaltation here. They do give her small shares. The three water signs share a set of rulers, called a triplicity. Dorotheus of Sidon, in the first century, gives it to Venus by day and Mars by night, with the Moon as partner. Ptolemy, writing in Alexandria around 150 AD, gives it to Mars, with Venus by day and the Moon by night as co-rulers (Tetrabiblos I.18, Robbins translation). William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (London, 1647), gives it to Mars alone, by day and by night. Venus also rules a few degrees of Cancer, called terms: 7° to 13° in the old Egyptian table, 20° to 27° in Ptolemy’s own table, which Lilly uses. Lilly adds the first ten degrees, her face. He kept the word peregrine for a planet with no rank of any kind. By his table, that fits Venus only from 10° to 20° of Cancer and after 27°.

Peregrine is not a curse. Lilly treated it as a plain fact: the planet works without support. It has to borrow. Whose support does it borrow here? The Moon’s.

The Moon owns this house, and Venus moves in

Cancer is the Moon’s only sign. Every other planet in the old system rules two. The Moon rules one, and this is it. So Venus in Cancer sits in a room the Moon furnished.

The old writers grouped Venus and the Moon together. Both were called moist and cool. Both were tied to the mother, the home, food and care. Ptolemy pairs them as the two feminine bodies of the seven. That pairing is why so many modern books read Venus in Cancer as doubly tender.

Modern writers keep the thread but change the frame. Liz Greene reads the Moon as the early bond with the mother, and Venus as what we later call lovely. Put one in the other’s sign and the two blur. Robert Hand makes the same point in plainer words: this Venus wants to be needed. Demetra George, who works from the Greek sources, keeps the older warning in view — a guest is still a guest.

To see what the Moon brings to the table, read our guide to the Moon in Cancer next to this one. The two placements share a room but not a role.

A partner with Venus at home in Libra sits at a square to this room, a match traced in Venus in Cancer and Venus in Libra compatibility.

How common is Venus in Cancer? We counted

Here is the method, so you can repeat it. We tracked Venus from 1600 to 2400 and added up the time she spends in each sign. We read her place every 2.4 hours with the astronomy-engine library, in the tropical zodiac — the zodiac tied to the seasons, which is the one Western astrology uses. A second engine, the Swiss Ephemeris, gave the same shares to the second decimal. The span is long on purpose. Venus repeats her path close to every eight years, so a few decades can tilt the count.

Venus spends 8.62 percent of her time in Cancer. That puts Cancer first of the twelve signs.

Why is it not one in twelve? Because Venus does not move at an even pace. She races through some signs and crawls through others, and she turns backward once every 19 months or so. The signs she crawls through collect more birth charts. Cancer leads at 8.62 per 100, just ahead of Taurus at 8.59. Capricorn trails at 8.04. Slide the 800 years by a century and Gemini or Taurus can edge ahead, but Cancer stays in the top three.

So Venus in Cancer is a little above average, and one of the most common Venus signs of all. The lead is slim. Roughly one chart in twelve has it. In a room of a hundred people, eight or nine of them.

The test nobody runs: is this Venus really watery?

The doctrine says Venus and the Moon belong together, and that Cancer is their shared ground. If that were true in charts, you would expect one thing: people with Venus in Cancer should have a watery Moon more than other people do. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

We ran it on the same 800 years, and checked it with the Swiss Ephemeris. The result is flat.

  • Moon in a water sign, all charts: 25.01 in 100.
  • Moon in a water sign, Venus in Cancer charts: 25.00 in 100.
  • Moon in Cancer itself, all charts: 8.33 in 100.
  • Moon in Cancer, Venus in Cancer charts: 8.27 in 100.

Read that again. Venus in Cancer gives you no extra chance of a watery Moon. The Moon in Cancer shows no lift either. The gap is a few hundredths of a point, within the noise of the count.

The reason is simple. The Moon circles the whole zodiac in 27 days. Venus takes about ten months. The two clocks run at wildly different speeds, so they line up by chance and by chance alone.

What does that mean for you? It means the “two feminine lights” idea is a claim about meaning, not about frequency. Venus in Cancer does not come with a watery Moon attached. If your Moon is in Aries or Aquarius, the mix is yours to read, and it is the normal case, not the odd one. Astrology of this kind is a language of symbols, not a science, and the numbers here mark exactly where the symbol stops and the sky begins.

Only five Sun signs can carry Venus in Cancer

Venus never strays far from the Sun. Seen from Earth she stays within about 47 degrees of it — a bit over a sign and a half. So your Sun sign limits where your Venus can be.

Over the same 800 years, every moment with Venus in Cancer had the Sun in one of five signs:

  • Leo: 29.7 in 100
  • Gemini: 29.3 in 100
  • Cancer: 24.1 in 100
  • Virgo: 8.7 in 100
  • Taurus: 8.3 in 100

No Aries, no Libra, no Capricorn. It cannot happen.

This is the most useful line on the page. Only about one in four people with Venus in Cancer is a Cancer at all. Most are Leo or Gemini. If you read a Cancer-flavoured love profile and it feels wrong, that is why — your Sun and your Venus are speaking different languages. Our guide to the Cancer sign itself covers the Sun side of that split.

The same split shapes couples, as Aries Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility shows: those partners share a Sun sign in only 1 couple in 20.

Two signs back, Taurus Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility is the most common of the 78 Venus pairs, and the Gemini Sun sits at its center.

Straight across the wheel, Cancer Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility sets the most common Venus sign against the rarest.

One sign back, Gemini Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility is almost as common, and its likeliest couple is a Gemini Sun with a Cancer Sun.

One sign on, Cancer Venus and Leo Venus compatibility joins the houses of the Moon and the Sun, which Ptolemy called averted.

Four signs on, Cancer Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility is the most common of the six water pairs, and only a Taurus Sun can sit behind both.

Two Cancer Venuses make the most common same-sign pair, and Cancer Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility shows their Suns match in about one couple in four.

Venus in Cancer man, Venus in Cancer woman

Two of the most searched phrases here are “Venus in Cancer man” and “Venus in Cancer woman”. The chart makes no such split. Venus sits at the same degree whoever holds the chart.

What changes is how people are taught to show it. A Venus in Cancer that wants to feed you, keep your things, and text you at midnight reads as sweet in one person and as clingy in another. That is a rule of manners, not of astrology.

Chris Brennan, who traces this material back to its Greek roots, keeps warning about the same trap. The old texts describe a placement. Every gendered layer on top came later, and most of it came from the last two centuries.

What the placement itself points to is narrow and clear:

  • Value placed on safety before excitement.
  • Care shown by acts — cooking, lending, remembering.
  • A long memory for slights, and a longer one for kindness.
  • Taste that leans to the old, the worn, the inherited.
  • A slow start, because the guest checks the room first.

Set that beside Venus at home. In Taurus, Venus owns the place and takes her time by right. The contrast is worth reading in full in our page on Venus in Taurus.

When Venus enters Cancer: the dates

Venus crosses Cancer in about 25 days. We computed each pass by scanning her position every two hours. Times are in UTC.

  • 2026: 19 May to 13 June — 25.4 days.
  • 2027: 3 July to 27 July — 24.4 days.
  • 2028: 7 August to 5 September — 29.3 days.
  • 2029: 2 June to 26 June — 24.6 days.

The 2028 pass runs four days longer than the rest. Venus slows near the end of that stretch, which stretches the crossing.

A transit is a live planet crossing a point in your chart. When Venus enters Cancer she lights up whatever you already have there. If your birth Venus is in Cancer, these are her return dates — the moment she comes home to the degree she held when you were born.

The 83-year gap: Venus does not turn back here

Planets sometimes look as if they move backward across the sky. That apparent reversal is called retrograde, and Venus does it for about six weeks every 19 months.

We scanned 1900 to 2100 for any backward motion by Venus inside Cancer. The pattern is striking.

Venus went retrograde in Cancer in 1900, 1908, 1916, 1924, 1932, 1940, 1948, 1956, 1964, 1972 and 1980. The last one was tiny: 22 to 27 May 1988, five days. Then it stops. The next one does not arrive until 14 August 2071.

That is a gap of more than 83 years. Anyone born after May 1988 and before 2071 cannot have a retrograde Venus in Cancer. Not one chart in that whole span.

Why? Venus repeats her loops in a five-fold pattern that drifts slowly backward through the zodiac. Each loop comes about two days earlier than it did eight years before, and about two degrees further back. One zone at a time slides out of a sign. Cancer lost its zone to Gemini in the late 1980s. The next zone reaches Cancer from Leo in 2071.

This is a hard, checkable fact, and it is worth more than a paragraph of adjectives. If you were born in 1964 with Venus in Cancer, there is a real chance she was retrograde. If you were born in 1994, there is none.

Reading Venus in Cancer without the sugar

Think of a birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers an area of life. The planets are the furniture. Venus is the piece you want people to admire.

Put Venus in the room of home instead of the sign of home, and you get Venus in the 4th house, a night birth with its own clock.

Put that piece in a room the Moon built, and two things follow.

First, the standard shifts. A peregrine Venus has no local rules to obey, so she borrows the Moon’s: safety, memory, family. Beauty gets measured by comfort.

Second, the risk shifts. Venus in her own signs risks laziness. Venus exiled risks conflict. Venus peregrine in Cancer risks something quieter — waiting. The guest waits to be invited. Robert Hand names the same pattern as an unspoken deal: I care for you, so you will not leave.

The good reading and the hard reading come from the same root. Which one you live is a matter of practice, not of fate.

What to do with this

  • Find your Venus sign before you read a word about it. The Sun sign is not the Venus sign.
  • Check your Moon. It is the landlord here, and it changes the whole tone.
  • Check your birth year against the retrograde list above.
  • Note the next Venus return: 3 to 27 July 2027.
  • Drop the word “blessed”. Peregrine means free, and free means unsupported.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venus in Cancer good or bad?

Neither, in the old system. Venus holds no major dignity and no debility in Cancer: no home, no exaltation, no exile, no fall. She keeps only minor shares, such as a part in ruling the water signs by day for Dorotheus and Ptolemy. Strength here comes from the rest of the chart, not from the sign.

What is Venus in Cancer attracted to?

Safety, history and proof. This Venus reads care as evidence. Being remembered counts for more than being dazzled.

How rare is Venus in Cancer?

It is not rare. From 1600 to 2400, Venus spends 8.62 percent of her time in Cancer. That ranks first of the twelve signs, just ahead of Taurus at 8.59. Capricorn is the least common at 8.04.

Which Sun signs can have Venus in Cancer?

Only five: Leo, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo and Taurus. Leo and Gemini each account for about 29 or 30 in 100 such charts. Cancer itself accounts for 24 in 100.

When is Venus in Cancer in 2026?

From 19 May to 13 June 2026, a pass of 25.4 days, measured in UTC.

Can Venus be retrograde in Cancer?

It happened last from 22 to 27 May 1988. The next one starts on 14 August 2071. Nobody born in the 83 years between those dates has a retrograde Venus in Cancer.

Is Venus in Cancer clingy?

The placement values closeness. Whether that reads as warm or heavy depends on the Moon, on the house Venus sits in, and on the person. The sign sets the appetite, not the manners.

Does Venus in Cancer mean my Moon is also in water?

No. We measured it from 1600 to 2400: 25.00 in 100 against a baseline of 25.01. There is no lift. The two bodies move on separate clocks.
