Cancer Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility joins two ends of the Venus count. Over eight centuries, Venus spends more time in Cancer than in any other sign. She spends the least time in Capricorn. The two signs also face each other across the wheel, so this couple is an opposition. One Venus sits where the summer solstice falls, the other where the winter solstice falls.
This page sets out what that means by the old rules, then checks the sky. You will see how common the pair is, which Sun signs come with it, and why its opposition has no fuzzy edges. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.
The pair at a glance
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you, what you value and how you show care. It is not the Sun sign from your horoscope. This page is about a couple where one partner has Venus in Cancer and the other has Venus in Capricorn.
Cancer is the fourth sign and Capricorn the tenth. They sit six signs apart, or 180 degrees. That angle is an opposition. Cancer is water, the element of feeling and memory. Capricorn is earth, the element of the body, work and things that last. Both are cardinal signs, the signs that open a season. Cancer opens summer, and Capricorn opens winter.
Among the 78 Venus pairs, no other opposition joins a cardinal water sign to a cardinal earth sign. It is the only one of its kind.
What the evidence says
A fair warning comes first. The sociologist David Voas ran the largest test of zodiac love signs in a 2007 paper called Ten Million Marriages. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from errors in the data.
Voas tested Sun signs only. We know of no test of that size for Venus signs. So what follows gives two people words for how they love. It cannot tell them whether they will last.
First and last in the Venus count
Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. Those loops make Venus stay longer in some signs than in others. Venus also repeats its path in an eight-year cycle. A short window can skew the count, so we used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of all time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank out of twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Cancer | 8.62 percent | First of the twelve. |
| Venus in Capricorn | 8.04 percent | Last of the twelve. |
| An even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
The gap is real but small, just 0.58 points. Venus in Cancer is about 7 percent more common than Venus in Capricorn. Neither one is rare. Both sit close to one person in twelve.
Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Cancer and the other Venus in Capricorn? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.39 percent, or one couple in 72. That ranks 34th of the 78 Venus pairs, right in the middle.
The Moon’s house facing Saturn’s
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 17, he hands each planet its houses, the signs it rules. He starts with the two lights. The Moon takes Cancer and the Sun takes Leo, the signs of high summer.
Saturn then gets the two signs straight across from them: Capricorn and Aquarius. Ptolemy gives his reason. Saturn is cold, the opposite of the warmth of the lights. These signs are cold and wintry too. So the wheel sets the Moon’s house and Saturn’s house face to face, on purpose.
That is the frame of this couple. One Venus lives in the Moon’s house. The other lives in Saturn’s house. Each is a guest there, as the next sections show. But the two hosts stand at the widest gap the wheel allows.
What Ptolemy says about the opposition
In chapter 13, Ptolemy lists four aspects. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious. So by the book, this is an angle of strain.
He names other ties in chapters 14 and 15. Some signs command and obey. Some behold each other, because the Sun gives them days of equal length. Here the reading matters. By whole signs, as in note 80 of Frank Robbins’s translation, Cancer commands Capricorn: both sit three signs from Aries, and Cancer lies in the summer half. His note 83 leaves both signs without a partner for beholding. By exact degree, Cancer mirrors Gemini and Sagittarius, and Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius and Gemini, so no degree tie joins them. The opposition is the only link both readings share.
Many modern astrologers read an opposition as a mirror, not only as a fight. Stephen Arroyo, for one, reads it as two halves of one theme. Here the theme is home. Cancer builds the nest. Capricorn builds the walls around it.
Venus in Cancer: a guest of the Moon
The old books rank each planet by the sign it stands in. That rank is called dignity. Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra, and exalted in Pisces. She is in exile in Aries and Scorpio, and falls in Virgo. Cancer holds none of those ranks.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), calls a planet with no major rank peregrine, from the Latin for a traveler. It takes the tone of its host. The host here is the Moon. So this Venus loves in the Moon’s way: with care, food, memory and a safe base. Our guide to Venus in Cancer covers it in full.
Venus in Capricorn: a guest of Saturn
Capricorn holds no major rank for Venus either. Her host is Saturn, the slow and cold planet of the old books. This Venus loves in Saturn’s way: with time kept, plans made good and promises that hold. Liz Greene reads it as love that proves itself by lasting.
A guest is not a weak planet. Our guide to Venus in Capricorn shows why its minor ranks matter.
Two small daytime claims
The old tables add minor ranks below the big ones. One of them is triplicity, a share in ruling a whole element. In the table of Dorotheus of Sidon, Venus rules the water signs in a daytime chart. She also rules the earth signs by day.
So in a daytime birth, both Venuses in this couple hold a small claim. Venus in Cancer has one through water. Venus in Capricorn has one through earth. At night, both claims pass to other planets. Lilly’s later table keeps Venus for earth by day, but gives water to Mars. So the Cancer claim depends on which table you use.
The Sun signs behind each Venus
Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.
| Venus sign | Sun signs it allows, with their share. |
|---|---|
| Venus in Cancer | Leo 29.7, Gemini 29.3, Cancer 24.1, Virgo 8.7 and Taurus 8.3 percent. |
| Venus in Capricorn | Aquarius 29.0, Sagittarius 28.8, Capricorn 23.2, Scorpio 9.6 and Pisces 9.4 percent. |
The lists share no sign. So these partners never share a Sun sign. Their Suns are never next door to each other either.
The likeliest Sun pair is a Leo Sun with an Aquarius Sun, at 8.60 percent of these couples. Next comes Leo with Sagittarius at 8.55 percent. Then comes Gemini with Aquarius at 8.50 percent, and Gemini with Sagittarius at 8.45 percent. No single pair reaches one couple in ten, so treat these as a lean, not a rule.
Look at the first and the last of those four. Leo and Aquarius face each other. So do Gemini and Sagittarius. The Venus opposition echoes in the Suns. Sorted by the angle between the two Suns, these couples split this way. The quincunx leads at 38.1 percent, then the trine at 25.5 percent. The opposition comes third, at 24.2 percent, about one couple in four. The square follows at 10.5 percent and the sextile at 1.6 percent.
A Cancer and Capricorn by Sun sign is not this couple
Many readers land here because they are a Cancer and a Capricorn by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.
A Cancer Sun has Venus in Cancer 24.1 percent of the time. A Capricorn Sun has Venus in Capricorn 23.2 percent of the time. Both must hold at once. That happens in about 5.6 percent of Cancer and Capricorn Sun couples, or one in 18. Our page on Cancer and Capricorn as Sun signs covers that other reading.
Seen from the Venus side, 41.7 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If you do not know your birth time and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.
An opposition with clean edges
Two Venuses six signs apart can sit anywhere from 150 to 210 degrees apart. The opposition is exact at 180 degrees. The gap allowed around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign.
| Orb allowed | Couples with an exact opposition. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19.0 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36.0 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46.2 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 55.6 percent of couples. |
These values are close to the same for every Venus pair. The edges are what sets this one apart. For a square or a trine by sign, some couples at the edges form a different major aspect in degrees. For an opposition, that never happens. At its widest, the gap reaches 150 degrees, a quincunx, which is not one of Ptolemy’s aspects. So a Cancer and Capricorn Venus couple is an opposition in degrees or no major aspect at all.
How the tradition reads the pair
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this match.
- Nest and walls. Cancer shows love by feeding and sheltering. Capricorn shows love by building and providing.
- Two starters. Both signs are cardinal, so both like to set the plan. They do best when each owns a clear part of it.
- Warm and cool. The Moon’s guest shows feeling at once. Saturn’s guest shows it slowly, through deeds.
- Same goal. Both value security. They reach for it by different roads, one through closeness and one through structure.
Use this reading as a way to talk about what each partner means by safety. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.
Orb shares use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs and Sun angles combine each partner’s Sun-sign shares from the table above. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 17.

Questions about Cancer and Capricorn Venus
Are Venus in Cancer and Venus in Capricorn compatible?
By sign they form an opposition, which Ptolemy calls disharmonious. Modern writers read it as two halves of one theme. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
Which is more common, Venus in Cancer or Venus in Capricorn?
Venus in Cancer, at 8.62 percent of all time from 1600 to 2400. It is the most common Venus sign. Venus in Capricorn, at 8.04 percent, is the least common.
Can a Venus in Cancer and a Venus in Capricorn share a Sun sign?
No. Their five possible Sun signs never overlap. The likeliest Sun pair is Leo with Aquarius, in 8.60 percent of these couples.
Is every Cancer and Capricorn Venus couple a true opposition?
No. Within 8 degrees, 46.2 percent are. The rest form no major aspect in degrees, since the widest gap is a quincunx.
