Gemini Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility joins two next-door signs. By whole signs, the old books say these two turn away from each other. By exact degrees, one couple in five sits on mirror points across the summer solstice. Both readings come from Ptolemy, and this page sets them side by side.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. You will find the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Two guests in two different houses
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology, it shows what you find lovely and how you like to show care. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The detriment and the fall are its two weak places.
Venus has no major rank in Gemini or in Cancer. The tradition calls such a planet peregrine, from the Latin word for a foreigner. So both partners hold Venus as a guest. The hosts differ. Gemini belongs to Mercury, the planet of speech. Cancer belongs to the Moon, the planet of moods and home.

Ptolemy, in Book I, chapter 18, gives the water signs to Mars, with Venus as a partner by day. So the Cancer Venus has a small share of its own. The Gemini Venus has none in the air signs, which Ptolemy gives to Saturn and Mercury.
Turned away by sign
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In chapter 13, he lists four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. An aspect is a set angle between two signs on the zodiac wheel. Gemini and Cancer sit one sign apart. That gap, 30 degrees, is not on his list. Modern writers call it a semi-sextile and treat it as a minor link.
Ptolemy goes further. In chapter 16, he calls signs one apart “averted,” as if they have turned their backs. He also calls them “disjunct,” which means cut off. There is one escape clause. Signs that share a tie from chapters 14 or 15 are not disjunct. So the question is whether Gemini and Cancer share such a tie.
Chapter 15 names signs that “behold” each other. These are parts of the zodiac equally far from a solstice sign. When the Sun is in either one, the days are the same length. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs by whole signs in his note 83. He pairs Gemini with Leo, the two signs on either side of Cancer. He writes that Cancer and Capricorn are left without mates. On that reading, Gemini and Cancer share no tie, and the pair stays averted.
Mirrored by degree
The second reading uses exact degrees. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), worked this way. Each degree has a mirror point across the solstice line, called its antiscion. The line runs through 0 degrees of Cancer, the longest day of the year. A degree of Gemini mirrors into Cancer. For example, 10 degrees Gemini mirrors onto 20 degrees Cancer. The Sun at either point gives the same length of day.
This is where the pair stands out. We counted the couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points.

Only six of the 78 Venus pairs reach these values on the solstice mirror. For most pairs, the share is close to zero. So the answer depends on the reading. By whole signs, these two are averted. Among the most common Venus pairs
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Cancer? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.46 percent, or about one couple in 69.
That ranks second of the 78 Venus pairs in our main count. Only Taurus with Cancer is more common. Cancer with Leo comes third, less than a thousandth of a point behind. Our check count can swap those two, so call it a tie. Among the twelve semi-sextile pairs, none is more common.
Four Sun signs they can share
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can go with only five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Four Sun signs appear on both lists: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and Leo. So these partners can share a Sun sign in four ways. Add them up, and 19.23 percent of these couples share a Sun sign. That is about one couple in five. In calendar terms, Gemini Venus people are born between about March 21 and August 22. Cancer Venus people are born between about April 20 and September 22.
The likeliest couple mirrors the Venus pair
Combine the two partners’ Sun signs. The most likely mix is a Gemini Sun and a Cancer Sun, the same two signs as the Venuses. It covers 14.57 percent of these couples. Next come Cancer with Leo, at 10.97 percent, and Taurus with Gemini, at 10.51 percent. No mix reaches one couple in six, so treat this as a lean, not a rule.
There is a twist inside that top mix. It can form two ways. The Gemini Sun can hold the Gemini Venus, with the Cancer Sun holding the Cancer Venus. That is the neat version. Or the Gemini Sun can hold the Cancer Venus, and the Cancer Sun the Gemini Venus. The crossed version is the larger share. Each partner then has Venus in the other’s Sun sign.
How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the gap between them.

Many readers land here because they are a Gemini Sun and a Cancer Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So for a Gemini Sun and a Cancer Sun, a Venus in each partner’s own Sun sign fits roughly one couple in 18. The semi-sextile in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses one sign apart can be anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees apart. The exact semi-sextile is 30. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.

These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. At an 8 degree orb, 7.09 percent of these couples form a major aspect by degree instead. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Gemini and at 1 degree Cancer. The gap is 2 degrees. By sign, it is a minor link. In the sky, it is a conjunction.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Air meets water. Gemini thinks a feeling through. Cancer feels it first and explains later.
- Pace. Gemini is mutable, the last sign of spring, and adjusts fast. Cancer is cardinal, the first sign of summer, and starts things with feeling.
- The hosts. Mercury wants news. The Moon wants safety. A text that is funny to one can feel cold to the other.
- The sore spot. A joke at the wrong time lands hard on a Cancer Venus. A sulk lands as a puzzle on a Gemini Venus.
A simple habit helps. Let the Gemini partner ask one real question each day and wait for the full answer. Let the Cancer partner say one need out loud, in plain words, rather than hint. Each then gets care in the form they trust.
The two readings of Ptolemy give a fair picture. By sign, these two face different ways. By degree, a good share of them share a mirror at the longest day. Neither reading has been tested on real couples.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So an averted pair is not a warning, and a mirror is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree and mirror figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
