Cancer Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility is the story of two water signs that meet more than most. Of the six pairs you can make from the water signs, this one turns up the most. A water sign is one of the three signs the old books tied to moist, cool nature: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Venus is the planet of love, taste and pleasure.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote about both signs. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
The most common water pair
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. Venus does not spend the same time in each sign. About every 19 months it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Cancer is the most common Venus sign of all. Pisces sits just under the even share. Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Cancer and the other Venus in Pisces? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.43 percent, or about one couple in 70. That ranks ninth of the 78 Venus pairs.

Same-sign pairs are rarer, since they can form only one way. Among the twelve pairs that form a trine, only Taurus and Virgo come out ahead of this one. The gap between them is small, about one hundredth of a point.
Venus honored in one sign, a guest in the other
The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where the planet is honored, like a guest of state. The fall and the detriment are its two weak places.

Ptolemy set out these ranks in Book I of the Tetrabiblos. He put the exaltation of Venus in Pisces for a simple reason. Venus is moist by nature, he wrote, and her power grows in Pisces, “where the beginning of the moist spring is indicated.” Her fall sits in Virgo, the sign across the wheel, which stands for the dry autumn.
Cancer gives Venus none of those ranks. It is the house of the Moon. So a Cancer Venus lives as a guest in the Moon’s home. The Moon is the planet of care, food and shelter in astrology. A share of rule in both signs
Ptolemy adds a second, smaller tie. In chapter 18 he sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of three. Each triangle has planets that govern it. The water triangle holds Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. He gave it to Mars first, through Scorpio, his house. Then he adds that “the moon by night and Venus by day are co-rulers.”
So in a day chart, Venus holds a share of rule in both of these signs. A day chart is a birth with the Sun above the horizon. That makes this pair less lopsided than the table above suggests. The Cancer Venus is not a stranger in water. She is one of its governors by day.

A trine, and no other old tie
Cancer and Pisces sit four signs apart. That makes a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. In chapter 13, Ptolemy calls the trine harmonious. His reason is that both signs are of the same kind. Here both are feminine, the old term for the earth and water signs.
The two signs differ in one way. Cancer is cardinal, a sign that opens a season. It starts summer. Pisces is mutable, a sign that closes one. It ends winter. Cardinal signs start things. Mutable signs adapt to them.
Ptolemy lists other ties besides the aspects. Signs can “command” and “obey,” or “behold” each other. His text can be read by whole signs or by exact degrees. This pair has neither tie, on either reading. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the whole-sign pairs in his notes 80 and 83. Cancer pairs with Capricorn for command. It has no mate at all for beholding. Pisces pairs with Taurus and with Scorpio. By degrees, as William Lilly read it in Christian Astrology (1647), no degree of Cancer mirrors a degree of Pisces. We measured it at zero.
So the trine carries the whole bond.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Only one Sun sign shows up in both lists: Taurus. A Taurus Sun can hold Venus two signs back, in Pisces, or two signs ahead, in Cancer. So these partners share a Sun sign only if both are Taurus. Multiply the two Taurus shares. The result is 0.76 percent, about one couple in 132.
Water by Venus, fire and air by Sun
Here is the surprise. The Venuses are both water. The Suns behind them are, most of the time, not.
Look at the largest groups again. A Cancer Venus goes most with a Leo or Gemini Sun. A Pisces Venus goes most with an Aries or Aquarius Sun. Those four are fire and air signs. We counted the couples where both Suns are fire or air. It comes to 34 percent, about one couple in three. In 58 percent, neither Sun is a water sign.

The most likely couple is a Leo Sun with the Cancer Venus and an Aries Sun with the Pisces Venus. That covers 8.77 percent of these couples, less than one in eleven. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.
How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.

Only one couple in four has its Suns in a trine as well. For the rest, the soft water link sits under a louder Sun story. Read both layers.
Cancer and Pisces by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here because they are a Cancer Sun and a Pisces Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Among Cancer Venus people, 24.07 percent have a Cancer Sun. Among Pisces Venus people, 23.28 percent have a Pisces Sun. Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So for a Cancer Sun and a Pisces Sun, this exact Venus pair fits roughly one couple in 18.
Turn it around. In 41.75 percent of Cancer Venus and Pisces Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 30th of the 78 pairs. In 5.6 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The trine in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses four signs apart can be anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. The true trine is 120. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.

These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. At an 8 degree orb, 3.46 percent of these couples form a square by degree instead. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Pisces and at 0 degrees Cancer. The gap is 91 degrees. By sign it is a trine. In the sky it is a square.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Shared ground. Both love through feeling first. A mood gets noticed before a word is said.
- Shelter and surrender. The Cancer Venus builds a safe place. The Pisces Venus gives without keeping score.
- Pace. Cancer starts things and wants a clear next step. Pisces adapts and lets the plan drift.
- The sore spot. Both dodge open conflict. Small hurts pile up because no one names them.
A simple habit helps. Once a week, each partner names one need in one sentence. The Cancer partner says what would feel safe. The Pisces partner says what would feel free. Then each picks one small act to answer the other.
The tradition treats an exalted planet as a guest of honor, strong but not in charge of the house. Read that way, the Pisces Venus brings the warmth, and the Cancer Venus brings the roof. The trine gives them a shared tongue. In the water signs, love is shown by being felt.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a trine is not a promise, and an exaltation is not a prize. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
