Aries Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility pairs a spring Venus with a summer Venus. Aries opens spring at the equinox. Cancer opens summer at the longest day. The two signs sit three steps apart, at a sharp angle called a square.
That gap shows up in the partners’ birthdays too. Venus stays close to the Sun, so each Venus sign keeps its own range of Sun signs. For this pair, the two ranges barely touch. Only about 1 couple in 20 shares a Sun sign, far fewer than in the next-door pairs.

A spring Venus and a summer Venus
Venus orbits inside the Earth’s path. From here, it never strays far from the Sun. Over the 800 years we checked, the widest gap was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the four signs closest to it.
That rule ties each Venus sign to a band of the year. We asked which Sun signs go with each Venus. Here is the share for each one.

The columns barely meet. Most people with Venus in Aries have a Sun from Pisces to Taurus, the late winter and spring signs. Most people with Venus in Cancer have a Sun from Gemini to Leo, the early summer signs. Only Taurus and Gemini appear in both columns, and each one is weak on one side.
How rarely the Suns match
Put the columns together. The two partners share a Sun sign in just 5.1 percent of these couples. That splits into 2.5 percent with two Taurus Suns and 2.6 percent with two Gemini Suns.
Compare the pairs next door. Partners with Venus in Aries and Taurus share a Sun sign in 19.1 percent of couples, as our page on Aries Venus and Taurus Venus compatibility shows. With Venus in Aries and Gemini, it is 12.8 percent. With Venus in Aries and Cancer, the rate drops to about 1 couple in 20.

The most common gap between the Suns is three signs, the same gap as the two Venus signs. So a square between the Venus signs goes hand in hand with a square between the Suns more than with any other gap. It is still a lean. Three couples in four have some other gap.
The single most likely mix is a Taurus Sun with the Aries Venus and a Leo Sun with the Cancer Venus. It covers 8.9 percent of these couples. A Taurus Sun with a Gemini Sun comes a close second, at 8.8 percent.
One more count. In 42.0 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.7 percent, both do: an Aries Sun with Venus in Aries next to a Cancer Sun with Venus in Cancer.

Two season signs at a right angle
An aspect is an angle between two points on the zodiac wheel. In Book I, chapter 13 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy lists four. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious. His reason is that they join signs of unlike kinds.
The old books split the signs into two kinds, masculine and feminine, in turn around the wheel. Aries is a masculine fire sign. Cancer is a feminine water sign. So the square links two unlike kinds, which is why the tradition reads it as friction.
Both signs are cardinal, the old word for a sign that starts a season. Ptolemy calls Aries an equinox sign, since day and night are equal when the Sun enters it. He calls Cancer a solstice sign, where the Sun turns back. Out of 78 Venus pairs, this is the only square that joins fire and water between two such season signs. Libra and Capricorn complete the set of season signs, but they pair air and earth.
Where each Venus stands
Each sign has a ruling planet, like a landlord. Mars rules Aries. The Moon rules Cancer. Venus rules neither sign, so it is a guest in both houses.

Exile means the sign across from a planet’s home. Aries faces Libra, a home of Venus, so Venus is in exile in Aries. William Lilly, writing in 1647, read an exiled planet as one that works hard for a small result. That is a rule about the planet, not a verdict on a person. In Cancer, Venus has no major rank. It takes its tone from the Moon, the planet of care, home and mood. Dorotheus of Sidon, a poet of the first century, gave Venus the lead of the water signs in a day chart. That is a minor rank, called triplicity. The hosts add a twist. Mars, the host of the Aries Venus, falls in Cancer. Fall is the sign where a planet is at its lowest. So the landlord of one Venus is at its weakest in the other partner’s sign.
Cancer is also the sign where Venus spends the most time, 8.62 percent over 800 years. Aries sits eighth, at 8.29 percent. The gap is small. No Venus sign is truly rare.
How close are the two Venus points?
A square by sign is not always a square by degree. Venus points in Aries and Cancer can sit anywhere from about 60 to about 120 degrees apart. The exact square is 90.
Astrologers allow an orb, which is the miss they accept around the exact angle. Here is the share of couples within each orb.

So fewer than half of these couples have a true square at a common orb of 8 degrees.
At the edges, the reading can flip. Take Venus at 29 degrees Aries and Venus at 1 degree Cancer. They sit 62 degrees apart, close to a sextile, a friendly angle. Early Aries and late Cancer can come near a trine, the easiest angle of all. One of these turns up within 8 degrees for 7.1 percent of couples. For them, the degrees tell a softer story than the signs.
How the tradition reads this pair

Where the pair flows
Both signs start things. Aries starts with a leap, and Cancer starts by building a nest. In that picture, the pair shares a drive to begin. Each Venus wants a love that is real and has a shape.
The Aries Venus brings courage and a plain word. The Cancer Venus brings memory, care and loyalty. A couple that sees these as two kinds of care has less to fight about.
Where it snags
The friction is about safety. The Aries Venus shows love by acting fast and saying it straight. The Cancer Venus shows love by guarding what it has. What feels honest to one partner can feel harsh to the other. What feels tender to one can feel slow to the other.
Modern writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo read a Venus through its element. Fire loves by doing. Water loves by feeling. The square does not make either one wrong. It marks the place where the two need words.
What the evidence says
No study has tested Venus pairs. The best test of love signs used the Sun. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas studied the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors on the forms.
So treat the Aries and Cancer Venus match as a way to talk about speed and safety. It is not a verdict on a couple.
How we measured it
All figures cover 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400, in the tropical zodiac, seen from the center of the Earth. Every moment of birth counts the same.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every change of sign for Venus and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then summed the time in each state exactly. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris, a separate set of planet math, on an hourly grid shifted by 30 minutes. That gave just over 7 million moments. The two routes agree within 0.01 of a point on every Venus figure here.
The couple odds pair two people born at unrelated moments. The degree shares use the true spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Real couples are born close in time, so treat these as odds for strangers.
