The house of Mars beside the house of Venus
Each sign has a ruling planet. Think of it as the landlord of the sign. A planet in a sign it rules is at home and acts in its own way. A planet in someone else’s sign is a guest and takes on the tone of its host.
Ptolemy set out the plan in the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 17, he gives Leo to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon. The other planets then get signs by their angle to those two homes. Venus takes Taurus and Libra, the signs a friendly sextile away from the lights. Mars takes Aries and Scorpio, the signs a harsh square away.
So Aries and Taurus sit side by side, yet they stand for opposite moods in that plan. One house belongs to the harsh planet, and the next one to the gentle one.
The sign across from a home is called exile, or detriment. Libra faces Aries, so Venus is in exile in Aries. Scorpio faces Taurus, so Mars is in exile in Taurus. The swap is neat. Each landlord is weak in the other’s house.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, read a planet in exile as one that works hard for a small result. That is a rule about the planet, not about the person. Venus in Aries still loves. So the pair holds a clear imbalance. One Venus speaks in its own voice. The other speaks in the voice of Mars.
Neighbors with no bond, by the old rules
An aspect is an angle between two points on the zodiac wheel. Ptolemy counted four of them in Book I, chapter 13: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Signs one step apart form none of them.
In chapter 16 he names such signs disjunct, or alien. He means signs with no tie of any kind. Some next-door signs still get a bond another way. Gemini and Cancer, for one, mirror each other across the longest day, so the two have days of equal length. Aries and Taurus get no such rescue. They are one of only 16 pairs, out of 78, that the old rules leave fully unlinked.
Modern astrologers do give this gap a name. They call it a semi-sextile, an angle of 30 degrees. It is a minor aspect, one that Ptolemy did not use. Most modern guides read it as two styles that must learn each other’s language.
The contrast runs deep. Aries is fire, and Taurus is earth. Aries opens spring, and Taurus holds it steady. Aries counts as a masculine sign, and Taurus as a feminine one. Out of 78 Venus pairs, this is the only semi-sextile of fire and earth where a season sign meets a fixed sign.
How close are the two Venus points?
A sign is 30 degrees wide. So two Venus points in Aries and Taurus can sit almost 0 degrees apart, or almost 60. By sign, every such couple has a semi-sextile. By degree, only some do.
Astrologers allow an orb, which is the miss they accept around the exact angle. Here is the share of couples whose two Venus points fall within each orb of an exact 30 degrees.

So fewer than half of these couples have a true semi-sextile at a common orb of 8 degrees.
The edges tell a second story. Take a Venus at 28 degrees Aries and one at 2 degrees Taurus. They sit only 4 degrees apart. By degree, that is a conjunction, the closest bond of all, even though the signs differ. At the far edge, early Aries and late Taurus can form a sextile across the sign line. One of these major aspects turns up within 8 degrees for 7.0 percent of couples.
So the exact degree can change the reading a lot. A birth date is enough to find the Venus degree to within a degree or so, since Venus never moves much in a day.
The Sun signs behind each Venus
Venus orbits inside the Earth’s path. From here, it never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. So your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the four signs closest to it.
We turned that around and asked a different question. Among people with Venus in a given sign, which Sun signs do they have? The table gives the share for each one.

Two things stand out. First, the most common Sun sign for a Venus in Aries is Taurus. So plenty of Taurus Suns carry a Venus in Aries. Second, the Aries Sun is the second most common Sun sign for a Venus in Taurus. The Sun signs and the Venus signs can trade places.
That trade is not rare. In 8.6 percent of these couples, the Aries Venus belongs to a Taurus Sun and the Taurus Venus belongs to an Aries Sun.
The single most likely mix is a Taurus Sun with the Aries Venus and a Gemini Sun with the Taurus Venus. Even so, it covers only about 9 percent of these couples. So it is a lean, not a rule.
When the two share a Sun sign
The two ranges of Sun signs overlap a great deal. Both partners can be Pisces, Aries, Taurus or Gemini Suns. Taken together, 19.1 percent of Aries and Taurus Venus couples share a Sun sign. That is about 1 couple in 5.

The Suns are one sign apart in 37.1 percent of these couples, and two signs apart in 24.3 percent. They are never opposite. An Aries Venus keeps its Sun between Aquarius and Gemini. A Taurus Venus keeps its Sun between Pisces and Cancer. The widest gap is five signs, from Aquarius to Cancer.
One more count. In 42.0 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.7 percent, both do, which means an Aries Sun with Venus in Aries next to a Taurus Sun with Venus in Taurus.

Where the pair flows
The two signs sit side by side in spring. Aries opens the season, and Taurus fills it out. In that picture, the Aries Venus lights the fire and the Taurus Venus tends the hearth.
Each one supplies what the other lacks in the old reading. Aries brings the first move and the plain word. Taurus brings the slow build and the steady hand. A couple that names this split can divide the work of love with less blame.
The myth helps too. Venus and Mars are the classic pair of lovers. This couple gives each partner one of their houses.
Where it snags
The friction is about pace. The Aries Venus wants love to start now and wants a clear yes. The Taurus Venus wants time and proof, and trusts what lasts. What reads as passion to one partner can read as pressure to the other.
The rank gap adds a second strain. The Taurus Venus has what it needs at home. The Aries Venus, as a guest of Mars, is restless by design. So one partner seeks calm, and the other seeks a spark.
Modern writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo read a Venus through its element. Fire loves by acting. Earth loves by building. Neither is better. They are two dialects of care.
What the evidence says
No study has tested Venus pairs. The best test of love signs used the Sun. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors on the forms.
So read the Aries and Taurus Venus match as a way to talk about pace and comfort. It is not a verdict on a couple. The odds on this page are odds about the sky, not about love.
How we measured it
All figures cover 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400, in the tropical zodiac, seen from the center of the Earth. Every moment of birth counts the same.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every change of sign for Venus and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then summed the time in each state exactly. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris, a separate set of planet math, with Venus and the Sun placed once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes. That gave just over 7 million moments. The two routes agree within 0.01 of a point on every Venus figure here.
The couple odds pair two people born at unrelated moments. The degree shares use the true spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Real couples are born close in time, so treat these as odds for strangers.
