Venus in Cancer and Venus in Libra compatibility joins the most common Venus sign with one of the two signs Venus rules. Venus is the planet of love and pleasure in astrology. In Libra it is at home. In Cancer it is a guest in the house of the Moon.

Venus at home meets Venus as a guest
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 17, he hands out the signs to the planets. The Moon took Cancer and the Sun took Leo, the two signs of high summer. Each other planet then got two signs, placed by their angle to those two homes.
Venus got the signs at a sextile, the friendly angle. Taurus is a sextile from Cancer. Libra is a sextile from Leo. So Libra became a home of Venus because it looks kindly on the Sun’s house. But count from Cancer to Libra and you get three signs. That is a square. The home of Venus and the home of the Moon sit at right angles.
In this couple, one Venus lives in that home. The other Venus lodges with the Moon. The square between the two partners is the same square that sits between the two houses.

A planet at home, William Lilly wrote in Christian Astrology in 1647, acts in its own way with no host to please. A planet with no rank he called peregrine, which means a wanderer. It takes its tone from its host. So the Libra Venus loves in the Venus style: grace, balance and fair terms. The Cancer Venus loves in the Moon’s style: care, memory and a safe base.

Two signs that start a season
Cancer and Libra are both cardinal. Cardinal is the old word for the four signs that open a season. Cancer opens summer. Libra opens autumn. Both want to begin things.
Out of 78 possible Venus pairs, this is the only one that joins water and air across a square between two cardinal signs. The other three season squares pair fire with water, air with earth, and earth with fire. And Cancer with Libra is not a pair the old texts treat as linked by daylight or by rank. Ptolemy’s lists of signs that see each other or obey each other leave it out. It stands on the square alone.
What does a square between two starters mean? Each wants to set the course. Water starts by holding close. Air starts by reaching out. So the pair can feel like two captains on one small boat.
Which Sun signs does each partner carry?
Venus never strays far from the Sun. Seen from Earth, the widest gap is about 47 degrees, a bit more than a sign and a half. So each Venus sign allows only five Sun signs. We counted how the time splits between them from 1600 to 2400.

So a person with Venus in Cancer is most likely a Leo or a Gemini by Sun sign. A person with Venus in Libra is most likely a Virgo or a Scorpio. Only about one in four of each has Venus in their own Sun sign.
That shapes the couple. The most likely Sun pair is a Leo Sun with Venus in Cancer and a Virgo Sun with Venus in Libra. It turns up in 8.92 percent of these couples. A Gemini Sun with a Virgo Sun comes next, at 8.82 percent.
What about a Cancer Sun with a Libra Sun, the couple that shares the signs by name? Both people then need Venus in their own Sun sign. That happens in 5.66 percent of Cancer and Libra Venus couples. It is the exception, not the rule.
The lists overlap in only two places: Leo and Virgo. So the partners share a Sun sign in two ways. Both Leo comes to 2.67 percent. Both Virgo comes to 2.61 percent. Together that is 5.3 percent, about 1 couple in 19. In the other 18, the two Suns differ.

How common is this couple?
Venus spends 8.62 percent of its time in Cancer. That is the top share of the twelve signs over eight centuries, though only by a hair. The rarest Venus sign, Capricorn, gets 8.04 percent.
Venus spends 8.32 percent of its time in Libra. That ranks sixth, right at the flat share of one in twelve.
Take two people born at random moments. The chance that one has Venus in Cancer and the other has Venus in Libra is twice the product of the two shares. The result is 1.44 percent, about 1 couple in 70. That puts the pair at rank 8 of the 78 Venus pairs. The most common pair of all, Taurus with Cancer, comes to about 1 in 68. So this one sits near the top, though the spread is small.

Is the square exact in degrees?
A sign match is not a degree match. Each Venus can sit anywhere in its 30 degree sign. A square is exact at 90 degrees apart. Astrologers allow a margin, called an orb. With an 8 degree orb, anything from 82 to 98 degrees counts.

So at the usual 8 degree orb, more than half of these couples have no square in degrees. The friction is by sign only.
Some couples even land on a softer angle. Say the Cancer Venus sits at 2 degrees and the Libra Venus at 29 degrees. The gap is 117 degrees, close to a trine. Now say the Cancer Venus sits at 28 degrees and the Libra Venus at 1 degree. The gap is 63 degrees, close to a sextile. At an 8 degree orb, 7.1 percent of couples form one of those in degrees instead of the square. Look up both degrees before you read this pair as a hard square.
Reading the pair the traditional way
In a chart, Venus shows what you find lovely and how you draw love in. Stephen Arroyo reads it as your sense of value. Liz Greene reads it as the image of love you carry. Robert Hand reads a square as a spur. It forces a choice, and so it builds skill.

- A shared home. The Cancer Venus builds the nest, and the Libra Venus makes it pleasant.

- Commitment. Both signs start things, and both like a bond with a name.
Where they rub
- Close against fair. The Cancer Venus wants to feel held. The Libra Venus wants things to feel even.
- Private against social. Water keeps love at home. Air shares it with friends.
- Hurt against tact. A kind word from Libra can sound cool to Cancer. A hurt silence from Cancer can puzzle Libra.
- Two starters. Both signs open a season, and both want to set the pace.
The skill here is naming needs. One partner learns to say, plainly, what makes them feel safe. The other learns that fair terms are not the same as warmth.
What the evidence says
No study has tested Venus signs in couples at scale. The largest test of love signs used Sun signs. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales. He studied about 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom.
Voas did not test Venus. So treat this page as words for a talk about care and fairness. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400. Every moment counts the same. The zodiac is tropical, seen from the center of the Earth.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun changed sign, to within a tenth of a second. It then summed the time in each case, with no random draws.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It placed Venus and the Sun once an hour, on a grid shifted by 30 minutes from the first. That gave 7,012,656 moments. The two routes agree to within 0.01 of a point on every Venus figure here.
The couple figures assume two people born at unrelated moments. Real couples are born close in time, so treat the odds as a guide to the sky. The Sun pair shares multiply the two columns of the Sun table. The Ptolemy points come from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapter 17.
