Venus Square Mars: The Tension That Keeps Landing in Gemini and Virgo

Venus square Mars is the aspect of attraction with friction built in. Venus is the planet of love, taste and pleasure. Mars is the planet of drive, desire and anger. When they stand 90 degrees apart, the two pull in different directions. You want closeness, and you want the chase. You want peace, and you want to win.

Here is something the usual write-ups skip. The sky has a favorite place for this aspect lately. Of the ten exact Venus–Mars squares between 2022 and 2029, six fall on the line between Gemini and Virgo. And one is happening as you read this. Venus and Mars are within 3 degrees of a square from October 7 to October 13, 2026, and the exact hit lands on October 10.

Below, you will find what the aspect means in a birth chart, how common it really is, why Gemini and Virgo keep getting it, every exact date from 2024 to 2029, and what it does between two people.

What does Venus square Mars mean in a natal chart?

Your natal chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Think of it as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life, and the planets are the furniture. An aspect is the angle between two pieces of furniture, measured around the circle of the zodiac. It shows how two planets talk to each other.

A square is an angle of 90 degrees, a quarter of the circle. You can read more in our guide to the square. Planets in a square sit in signs that clash. In the second century, the astronomer Ptolemy sorted the angles in his Tetrabiblos (book I, chapter 13). He called the trine and the sextile harmonious. He called the square and the opposition hostile.

Now add the two planets. In the tradition, Venus stands for what you love, what you find beautiful, and how you draw people in. Mars stands for what you go after, how you fight, and how you act on desire. In The Combination of Stellar Influences (1940), the German astrologer Reinhold Ebertin read the Venus and Mars pair as the meeting point of love and passion.

Put a square between them, and the classic reading follows. Wanting and getting do not move at the same speed. The heart says “wait,” and the body says “now.” Or it goes the other way. You chase hard, then lose interest once the other person says yes.

The British astrologer Sue Tompkins makes a general point about squares in Aspects in Astrology (2002). Hard aspects push you to act. A trine lets two planets coast. A square makes them deal with each other, again and again. With Venus square Mars, the result is energy. It is restless, it is charged, and it does not sit still.

The traits astrologers link to it

Here is how the tradition describes people born with this aspect. Read it as a set of themes, not a verdict.

  • Strong attraction and strong reactions. Desire and irritation come from the same place.
  • Love that needs a spark. Calm, easy affection can feel flat.
  • Flirting that turns into sparring. Teasing is part of the charm.
  • Quick heat in arguments, and quick making up after.
  • A creative drive. Art, music, dance and sport give the tension somewhere to go.

The American astrologer Stephen Arroyo wrote about aspects as energy that has to be used, not avoided. Seen that way, this square is fuel. The question is what you burn it on.

The sign pair changes the flavor

A square almost always links two signs of the same mode. The mode is how a sign acts. Cardinal signs start things: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Fixed signs hold on: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Mutable signs adapt: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.

  • A cardinal square, such as Venus in Libra and Mars in Capricorn, acts fast. The clash comes out in the open.
  • A fixed square, such as Venus in Scorpio and Mars in Leo, digs in. Pride and loyalty both run deep.
  • A mutable square, such as Venus in Virgo and Mars in Gemini, talks it through. The tension lives in words, plans and second thoughts.

With a wide orb, a square can also cross from one mode into the next. The orb is the margin astrologers allow around the exact angle. A square at 84 degrees still counts, and so does one at 96.

How common is Venus square Mars?

We measured it. About 1 birth chart in 11 has Venus square Mars within an orb of 8 degrees. That is 8.9 percent. With a tight orb of 3 degrees, the figure drops to 3.2 percent, or about 1 chart in 31.

Here is the method, so you can check it. We drew 200,000 moments at random between 1950 and 2010. For each one, we took the positions of Venus and Mars from the Swiss Ephemeris, the standard tool astrologers and software use. We used the tropical zodiac, the one tied to the seasons. Then we counted the moments when the gap between the two planets came within 8 degrees, and within 3 degrees, of 90 degrees.

We then checked the result a second way. Instead of random draws, we stepped through the same 60 years every 12 hours. That route gave 8.9 percent again. A third run, over 800 years from 1600 to 2400, gave the same figure. The square holds steady over the centuries.

For scale, here is how the square compares with its easy cousins over 1950 to 2010, with the same 8-degree orb.

Aspect between Venus and MarsShare of birth charts.
Sextile, 60 degrees apartAbout 12.4 percent.
Square, 90 degrees apartAbout 8.9 percent.
Trine, 120 degrees apartAbout 7.5 percent.

So the hard square beats the easy trine. The reason is Venus. Seen from Earth, Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. Mars has no such leash. Small and middle-sized gaps between the two come up more than wide ones, so 90 degrees shows up more than 120.

The rate is not even from year to year. Babies born in the 1960s had it 10.1 percent of the time. Babies born in the 1950s had it only 7.3 percent of the time. That is the rhythm of the two planets, not a trend.

Do you need a birth time?

For this aspect, mostly no. Venus and Mars move slowly, never much more than a degree a day. Your birth date alone tells you whether you have the square. A birth time matters only when the orb sits right at the edge of the margin. It matters far more for the Moon, which moves about 13 degrees a day, and for the houses of your chart.

Why the sky keeps using Gemini and Virgo

We listed every exact Venus–Mars square from 2022 to 2029, ten in all. Six of the ten sit on the line between Gemini and Virgo. Venus in Gemini squares Mars in Virgo, or the other way round.

Part of the answer is the calendar. Most of these hits fall between June and September. In those months, the Sun moves through Cancer and Leo. Venus never wanders far from the Sun, so in summer it sits close by, in Gemini or in Virgo. Mars then needs to stand a quarter turn away. In 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027, Mars did, in the other of those two signs.

This is a passing pattern, not a law. The sky shifts the stage every few years. In January 2029, the square moves to Venus in Capricorn and Mars in Libra. Even so, it means something concrete. If you were born in a summer between 2022 and 2029 and have this aspect, your Venus or your Mars has a good chance of being in Gemini or Virgo.

Venus square Mars transit: every date from 2024 to 2029

A transit is what the planets are doing in the sky today, as opposed to where they were when you were born. When Venus squares Mars in the sky, astrologers read a short season of charged moods for everyone. Love and anger sit closer than usual. Small habits grate. Attraction runs hot.

Here are the exact dates, computed with the Swiss Ephemeris. The first time is in Universal Time (UTC). The second is New York time.

Notice the gap. There is no exact Venus–Mars square at all in 2028. That is not rare. Between 1950 and 2009, ten years had none, and eleven years had three. On average, the sky makes 1.4 exact squares a year.

The October 2026 square, with Venus retrograde

The current square is a special one. Planets sometimes seem to move backward from where we stand on Earth. Astrologers call that retrograde. Venus turned retrograde on October 3, 2026, at 8 degrees Scorpio. A week later, moving backward, it squares Mars in Leo. Both are fixed signs, so the classic reading is a stubborn one. Old desires come back, and pride gets in the way of making up.

Then the roles swap. Mars turns retrograde on January 10, 2027, at 10 degrees Virgo. Six days later, on January 16, Venus in Sagittarius squares it.

How long does Venus square Mars last?

Within the usual 8-degree orb, a Venus–Mars square lasts about three weeks. Across 1950 to 2010, the middle value was 22 days. The shortest window lasted 6 and a half days. The longest ran 42 and a half days, when a retrograde planet kept the two locked in place. The October 2026 window runs from September 28 to October 18.

Venus square Mars in synastry

Synastry is the art of comparing two birth charts to read a relationship. You lay one chart over the other and look at the angles between them. Our guide to synastry charts explains the method step by step.

In synastry, the aspect forms when one person’s Venus squares the other person’s Mars. The tradition reads it as one of the strongest signs of physical attraction. It is also a sign of friction. One person wants tenderness, the other wants the chase. Each finds the other exciting, and each knows how to annoy the other.

How common is it? We paired 40,000 random birth moments from 1950 to 2010. One person’s Venus squared the other’s Mars in 9.0 percent of pairs. When you count both directions, her Venus to his Mars or his Venus to her Mars, the share rises to 17 percent. That is about 1 couple in 6.

Astrologers read the direction too. The Venus person feels pursued, judged on looks, or rushed. The Mars person feels pulled in, then held off. The square does not say the bond will fail. It says the bond will not be quiet.

Mars square Venus: does the order matter?

In a single birth chart, no. “Mars square Venus” and “Venus square Mars” name the same angle. Astrologers list the faster planet first by habit, and Venus moves faster than Mars on average.

In synastry, the order does matter, because it tells you whose planet is whose. “My Venus square your Mars” is not the same as “your Venus square my Mars.” Many couples have one and not the other.

If you want to compare this square with Venus and Mars at the same degree, read our page on Venus conjunct Mars. For the full map of angles, see our guide to the astrological aspects.

The two easy angles between the pair have their own pages too: Venus sextile Mars and Venus trine Mars.

Working with the square

Astrology is a symbolic language, not a science. No aspect forces a choice on you. The tradition reads Venus square Mars as a tension to use, and it points to a few ways people do that.

  • Name the two wants. Write down what you love and what you chase. Notice where they fight.
  • Give Mars a job. Sport, dance and hard projects take the heat off your love life.
  • Give Venus time. Let a bond grow past the first spark before you judge it.
  • Pause before you react. The flash of anger and the flash of desire come from the same place.
