Gemini Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility starts with an odd fact. Both Venuses sit in a house owned by the same planet, Mercury. Yet the two signs form a square, the tense angle of 90 degrees. Among all 78 Venus pairs, only one other pair joins two signs of one ruler at a square.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this couple. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Treat it as a way to talk about love. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Two guests in the house of Mercury
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in at your birth. Astrologers read it as your style of affection: what you find lovely, and how you like to be loved. The old authors also gave each planet a rank in each sign. A domicile is a sign the planet rules, its home. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its two weak seats. A planet with none of these ranks is called peregrine, which means a guest.

In Book I of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy explains how the planets got their houses. The Sun and the Moon take Leo and Cancer, the two signs of high summer. Each other planet then takes one sign on each side, in the order of their spheres. Mercury, the nearest, takes the two signs next door: Gemini before Cancer, and Virgo after Leo. Venus takes the next pair out, Taurus and Libra.
So Gemini and Virgo are twin houses of one planet, built on either side of the lights. Ptolemy put the exaltation of Mercury in Virgo as well. He placed the fall of Venus there too, which he called her depression. His reason was about moisture. Venus is moist by nature, so she gains power in Pisces, where the wet season begins. Virgo, across the wheel, stands for the dry end of summer, and she sinks there.

Why one ruler still gives a square
Gemini and Virgo sit three signs apart. That makes a square. In chapter 13, Ptolemy calls the square out of harmony. His reason is that it joins signs of unlike kind. Gemini is a masculine sign, the old term for the fire and air signs. Virgo is feminine, the old term for earth and water. So air meets earth here.
Yet they share a great deal. Both are mutable, the signs that close a season. Ptolemy calls them double-bodied, since each one bridges two seasons. Gemini ends spring. Virgo ends summer. Both belong to Mercury. The square here is a clash of element inside a shared rhythm. The couple adjusts fast. The friction comes from what each one counts as real.
Among all 78 Venus pairs, only two join two signs of one ruler at a square. This one belongs to Mercury. The other, Sagittarius with Pisces, belongs to Jupiter. This is also the only Venus square that links a mutable air sign with a mutable earth sign.
No other tie in Ptolemy
Ptolemy lists other bonds between signs. In chapter 14, some signs command and others obey. In chapter 15, some signs behold each other. Gemini and Virgo have neither bond. Read by whole signs, as in the notes of Frank Robbins, the beholding tie pairs Gemini with Leo and Virgo with Taurus.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), read that tie by exact degree. Each degree has a mirror point across the line of the solstices, called its antiscion. A degree of Gemini mirrors into Cancer, never into Virgo. So both readings agree. The square is the one real link between these signs.
How common this couple is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. Seen from Earth, it speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for about six weeks. Astrologers call this retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Virgo? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the shares. The result is 1.42 percent, about one couple in 70. That ranks 15th of the 78 Venus pairs. Among the twelve pairs that form a square, it ranks fourth.
The Sun signs behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. The widest gap we found is 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign comes with only five Sun signs. The tables give the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

In calendar terms, Gemini Venus people are born between about March 20 and August 22. Virgo Venus people are born between about June 21 and November 21. The two windows overlap for two months, the months of Cancer and Leo.
The likeliest Suns fill the gap between the two signs
Go back to the scheme of the houses. Mercury’s two signs stand on either side of Cancer and Leo, the houses of the Moon and the Sun. Now look at the two tables. The biggest group of Gemini Venus people has a Cancer Sun. The biggest group of Virgo Venus people has a Leo Sun. So the likeliest couple fills the gap between the two signs of Mercury.
That mix, a Cancer Sun and a Leo Sun in either order, covers 9.69 percent of these couples. Next come Taurus with Leo and Cancer with Libra, at 8.67 percent each. No single mix reaches one couple in ten. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.
Can the two partners share a Sun sign? Yes, but only in Cancer or in Leo. Both Suns in Cancer covers 2.59 percent of these couples. Both Suns in Leo covers 2.58 percent. Together that makes 5.17 percent, about one couple in 19.

About one couple in four repeats the square in its Suns. For the rest, the Venus square sits beside a different Sun story. Read both layers.
A Gemini Sun and a Virgo Sun are a different couple
Many readers are a Gemini Sun and a Virgo Sun. That rarely makes them this Venus pair. Among Gemini Venus people, 24.02 percent have a Gemini Sun. Among Virgo Venus people, 23.66 percent have a Virgo Sun. Across all signs, Venus shares the sign of the Sun in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So for a Gemini Sun and a Virgo Sun, a Venus in each partner’s own Sun sign fits roughly one couple in 18.

Turn it around. In 42 percent of Gemini Venus and Virgo Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 13th of the 78 pairs. In 5.68 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. When Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The square in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses three signs apart can sit anywhere from 60 to 120 degrees apart. The exact square is 90. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to count how many couples come close.

These values barely change from one Venus pair to the next. The edges tell more. At an 8 degree orb, 7.16 percent of these couples form a different major aspect by degree. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Gemini and at 0 degrees Virgo. The gap is 61 degrees. By sign it is a square. In the sky it is a sextile, the friendly angle. The reverse works too. Venus at 0 degrees Gemini and at 29 degrees Virgo sit 119 degrees apart, a trine by degree.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how astrologers read the pair.
- A shared tongue. Both Venuses love through words, notes and small acts of attention.
- Range and focus. The Gemini Venus wants variety and fresh talk. The Virgo Venus wants one thing done well.
- Air and earth. Gemini trusts what is said. Virgo trusts what is shown. A promise is enough for one and not for the other.
- The sore spot. A remark from Virgo can sound like a verdict to Gemini. A change of plan from Gemini can look careless to Virgo.
A plain habit helps. Let the Gemini partner turn one idea a week into a plan with a date. Let the Virgo partner name one thing a week that is fine as it is. Each then gets to love in their own dialect of Mercury.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a square is not a warning, and a shared ruler is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
Method and sources
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every moment Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That makes more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac.
