Gemini Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility pairs the Twins with the Fishes. Both signs come in twos, and both sit at the end of a season. In the sky, the two signs meet at right angles, a link called a square. And only one of the two Venuses holds a seat of honor.
This guide sets out what those facts mean, with numbers we measured over the years 1600 to 2400. It covers how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and what Ptolemy and William Lilly wrote about Venus in each sign. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.
Two double signs at right angles
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you in and how you show care. It is not your Sun sign, the one you read in a horoscope. This page is about two people, one with Venus in Gemini and one with Venus in Pisces.
Gemini is the third sign and Pisces the twelfth. Count from one to the other and you get three signs, or 90 degrees. That angle is the square, which the tradition reads as friction. Gemini is an air sign and Pisces a water sign. Both are mutable, which means each one closes a season. Gemini closes spring, and Pisces closes winter.
Ptolemy, in his Tetrabiblos, has a special name for these two. He calls them bicorporeal, or double-bodied. The picture fits: two twins and two fish. In his view, such signs sit between two seasons and share in both. So each partner has a Venus in a sign that likes to hold two things at once.
Out of all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only square that joins air and water between two mutable signs. It is a square of two flexible signs, not two stubborn ones.
How common is each Venus?
Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to turn backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. That loop makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others. Venus repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so we used eight full centuries to smooth it out.

The gaps are small. From the top sign to the last one, the spread is under 0.6 points. No Venus sign is truly rare.
Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Pisces? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.41 percent, or one couple in 71. That ranks 20th of the 78 pairs, in the busier third of the list.
One Venus honored, one Venus a guest
Old astrology ranks each planet by the sign it stands in. That rank is called dignity. In the Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD, Ptolemy gives Venus two homes, Taurus and Libra. He also names one sign where she is exalted, which means honored like a guest of high rank. That sign is Pisces.
Ptolemy explains the choice through the seasons. Venus, in his scheme, is warm and moist. Pisces opens the moist season that leads into spring, so her nature grows there. Gemini is a plainer case. Venus holds none of the four major ranks there: no home, no exaltation, no exile and no fall. She keeps one minor right. She owns a small band of degrees in the sign, called her terms. Astrologers call a planet with no major rank peregrine, from the Latin for wanderer. So the ranks are uneven. One partner has Venus in her seat of honor. The other has Venus as a guest in Mercury’s house. A rank is a label from the old books. It is not a grade for a person.
The two hosts are both weak in the other sign
Each sign has a ruling planet, its host. Mercury rules Gemini. Jupiter rules Pisces. Here the pair has a twist that few pages mention.
Mercury is in exile in Pisces, since Pisces faces Virgo, his other home. Pisces is also his fall, across from his exaltation in Virgo. So the host of the Gemini Venus is at his very weakest in the partner’s sign. Jupiter, in turn, is in exile in Gemini, since Gemini faces Sagittarius, his home.
Put simply, neither host feels at ease in the other’s house. Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), read a planet in exile as one that works against its grain. Astrologers who read hosts this way see two people who each have to learn the other’s rules. Mercury wants names, facts and quick words. Jupiter wants meaning, faith and a larger story.
That contrast is the classic reading of this square. One Venus wants to talk love through. The other wants to feel it without words.
What Ptolemy says about the square
In Book I, chapter 13, Ptolemy names the aspects, the set angles between signs. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious and the square disharmonious. His reason is gender. A square joins a masculine sign with a feminine one. Gemini, an air sign, is masculine. Pisces, a water sign, is feminine.
Ptolemy adds two more links in chapters 14 and 15. Signs that command and obey sit at equal distance on each side of the spring point. Signs that behold each other sit at equal distance on each side of the summer point, so they share days of the same length. Scholars read these two rules in two ways. One way uses whole signs. The other uses exact degrees, as Lilly did with mirror points called antiscia. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, discusses both readings in his notes.
By whole signs, Gemini pairs with Aquarius for command and with Leo for equal days. Pisces pairs with Taurus for command and with Scorpio for equal days. Neither list includes the other sign. By degrees, we counted couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points. For this pair the count is zero. Both readings agree, then. The square is the only classical thread between these two Venuses.
Is the square exact in degrees?
Two Venuses three signs apart can be anywhere from 60 to 120 degrees apart. The square is exact at 90 degrees. The allowed gap around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign.

These values are close to the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. With an 8 degree orb, 7.1 percent of these couples form a sextile or a trine in degrees instead. Say Venus sits at 28 degrees of Gemini and at 2 degrees of Pisces. The gap is 64 degrees, close to a sextile. By sign it is a square. In degrees it is a friendly link.
Which Sun signs do these partners have?
Seen from Earth, Venus stays close to the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two signs next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

The two lists overlap on Aries and Taurus, the first two signs of spring. So the partners can share a Sun sign in two ways: both Aries, or both Taurus. Add the two cases and you get 5.1 percent of these couples, about one in 20.
The likeliest single mix is an Aries Sun with a Taurus Sun, at 9.4 percent of these couples. Next comes Aries with Cancer, at 8.9 percent, and then Cancer with Aquarius, at 8.6 percent. Note the pattern. The Venus pair joins winter’s end with spring’s end. Its likeliest Sun pair sits in the middle of spring.

So about one couple in four has a square by Sun as well as by Venus. For the other three, the Sun story and the Venus story differ. A full reading looks at both.
A Gemini and a Pisces by Sun sign is not this couple
Many readers land here because they are a Gemini and a Pisces by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.
A Gemini Sun has Venus in Gemini 24.0 percent of the time. A Pisces Sun has Venus in Pisces 23.3 percent of the time. Both must hold at once, which happens in about 5.6 percent of Gemini and Pisces Sun couples, or one in 18. The Sun-sign match has its own page: Pisces and Gemini compatibility.
From the Venus side, 41.7 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 34th of the 78 pairs. A birth chart shows your Venus sign in a few seconds. If your birth time is unknown and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.
Reading the pair the old way
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition, and modern writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo, read Venus in these two signs.
Venus in Gemini loves through the mind. It flirts with words, jokes and questions. It wants news, change and a partner who keeps the talk alive. Venus in Pisces loves through the heart. It gives without keeping count, reads moods before they are named, and wants to merge.
- Words and silence. Gemini says it out loud. Pisces feels it first and speaks later, if at all.
- Light and deep. Gemini keeps things playful. Pisces wants to go under the surface.
- Two flexible signs. Both adapt with ease. The risk is that no one sets the course.
- Many friends, one bond. Gemini likes a wide circle. Pisces wants a private world for two.
- After a fight. Gemini talks it out at once. Pisces needs quiet time before it can come back.

What the evidence says
The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. In a 2007 paper called Ten Million Marriages, he used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from data errors.
Voas tested Sun signs only. As far as we know, no one has run such a test for Venus signs. So the figures on this page describe the sky, not the fate of a couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.
Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs multiply each partner’s Sun-sign shares. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 11 to 19.
