Gemini Venus and Leo Venus compatibility pairs two different Venus signs that lean the same way. Each one is most likely found with a Cancer Sun. So half of these couples include a Cancer Sun, a sign that holds neither Venus. The two signs also form a sextile, which Ptolemy called harmonious.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Air and fire, two signs apart
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology, it shows what you find lovely and how you like to show care. Gemini is an air sign. Leo is a fire sign. They sit two signs apart on the zodiac wheel, an angle of 60 degrees called a sextile.
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 13, he calls the sextile and the trine harmonious. His reason is that both signs are of the same kind. Gemini and Leo are both masculine, the old term for the fire and air signs. So the link is friendly in his terms. It is weaker than a trine, but it is a real aspect, an angle the old books count.
The two differ in one way. Gemini is mutable, the last sign of spring. Leo is fixed, the middle sign of summer. Mutable signs adjust. Fixed signs hold on. Among the 78 Venus pairs, only two form a sextile between a mutable air sign and a fixed fire sign. The other is Sagittarius with Aquarius.
Two guests with two famous hosts
The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The detriment and the fall are its two weak places. Venus rules Taurus and Libra. She is exalted in Pisces. She is weak in Aries, Scorpio and Virgo.
Venus has no major rank in Gemini or in Leo. She holds only a few degrees in each, called her terms. The tradition calls such a planet peregrine, from the Latin word for a foreigner. So in this couple, both Venuses are guests. What matters is the host.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Host of the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Venus | No major rank, a guest. | Mercury, the planet of speech. |
| Leo Venus | No major rank, a guest. | The Sun, the planet of self. |
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), said a planet with no rank leans on the ruler of its sign. A Gemini Venus leans on Mercury. It courts with talk, wit and news. Our page on Venus in Gemini covers this placement in full. A Leo Venus leans on the Sun. It courts with warmth, display and loyalty. Our page on Venus in Leo explains why the Sun is never far from it.
The two hosts stay close in the sky. Mercury never gets more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. Venus never gets more than about 47. So in both charts, the host and the guest sit near the Sun. The Sun shapes both partners’ Venus, one directly and one through Mercury.
Signs that behold each other, by whole signs
Ptolemy names another tie in chapter 15. Signs equally far from a solstice sign are said to “behold” each other. When the Sun is in either one, the days are the same length. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs by whole signs in his note 83. Gemini and Leo come first on his list. They sit on either side of Cancer, the sign of the summer solstice.
The second reading uses exact degrees, as Lilly did. Each degree has a mirror point across the solstice line, called its antiscion. A degree of Gemini mirrors into Cancer, not into Leo. So two Venuses sit on mirror points only when both are in the first few degrees of their signs. We counted them. Within 1 degree, it is 0.06 percent of couples. Within 3 degrees, it is 0.51 percent.
So the answer depends on the reading. By whole signs, yes, and the pair has both a sextile and a beholding tie. By degrees, almost never. Neither reading lets these two “command” and “obey,” the tie of chapter 14. In note 80, Robbins pairs Gemini with Aquarius and Leo with Sagittarius for that one. Our page on Gemini and Leo sun sign compatibility tests this equal-day tie on the Sun signs.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Gemini | 8.46 percent | Third of twelve. |
| Venus in Leo | 8.46 percent | Fourth of twelve, a hair behind. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Leo? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.43 percent, or about one couple in 70. That ranks tenth of the 78 Venus pairs. Among the twelve sextile pairs, it comes third, after Taurus with Cancer and Cancer with Virgo.
Different Venuses, same likeliest Sun
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can go with only five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.
| Sun sign | Share of Gemini Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8.31 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Taurus | 29.06 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Gemini | 24.02 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Cancer | 29.96 percent | The largest group. |
| Leo | 8.65 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Leo Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 8.37 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Cancer | 29.84 percent | The largest group. |
| Leo | 23.88 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Virgo | 29.16 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Libra | 8.76 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
Look at the top of each list. For a Gemini Venus, the largest group is Cancer Suns. For a Leo Venus, it is Cancer Suns too. The Gemini Venus runs one sign ahead of a Cancer Sun. The Leo Venus runs one sign behind it. Only one other Venus pair shares its likeliest Sun sign like this.
The result is plain. In 50.9 percent of these couples, at least one partner is a Cancer Sun. Both are Cancer Suns in 8.94 percent. In calendar terms, Gemini Venus people are born between about March 21 and August 22. Leo Venus people are born between about May 21 and October 22.
Which Sun pairs come up
Combine the two partners’ Sun signs. The most likely mix is a Cancer Sun with a Leo Sun, in 9.73 percent of these couples. Gemini with Cancer follows at 9.68 percent. Then two Cancer Suns, at 8.94 percent. No single mix reaches one couple in ten. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.
Three Sun signs appear on both lists: Gemini, Cancer and Leo. So these partners can share a Sun sign in three ways. Together, that covers 13.02 percent of couples, about one in eight. How do the two Suns line up in general? We grouped the Sun pairs by the gap between them.
| Gap between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Sextile | 25.3 percent | Two signs apart, like the Venuses. |
| Semi-sextile | 24.4 percent | Next-door signs. |
| Square | 19.1 percent | Three signs apart, a tense angle. |
| Same sign | 13.0 percent | Both Suns in one sign. |
| Trine | 12.6 percent | Four signs apart, an easy angle. |
| Quincunx | 5.0 percent | Five signs apart. |
| Opposition | 0.7 percent | Only Aries with Libra. |
Only one couple in four has its Suns in a sextile as well. For the rest, the friendly Venus link sits on top of a different Sun story. Read both.
Gemini and Leo by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here because they are a Gemini Sun and a Leo Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So for a Gemini Sun and a Leo Sun, a Venus in each partner’s own Sun sign fits roughly one couple in 18.
Turn it around. In 42.16 percent of Gemini Venus and Leo Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.74 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The sextile in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses two signs apart can be anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees apart. The true sextile is 60. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.
| Orb | Couples with a true sextile | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 19.00 percent | About one in five. |
| 6 degrees | 35.98 percent | About one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.19 percent | Just under half. |
| 10 degrees | 55.52 percent | Just over half. |
These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. At an 8 degree orb, 3.51 percent of these couples form a square by degree instead. Picture Venus at 1 degree Gemini and at 29 degrees Leo. The gap is 88 degrees. By sign, it is a sextile. In the sky, it is a square.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Shared ground. Both like play. A night out, a game or a good story counts as romance.
- Talk and show. The Gemini Venus wants a lively chat. The Leo Venus wants to be seen and chosen.
- Pace. Gemini adjusts and moves on. Leo holds a bond and expects the same back.
- The sore spot. Light teasing can sting a Leo Venus. A big, fixed display of feeling can feel heavy to a Gemini Venus.
A simple habit helps. Let the Gemini partner name one thing they admire in the other each day, out loud. Let the Leo partner leave room for a free evening with no plan. Each then gets care in the form they trust.
Then look at the Suns. Half of these couples hold a Cancer Sun, and the Moon rules Cancer. So many of these playful Venuses sit on top of a Sun that wants a safe home. That layer is worth a talk of its own.
The same signs through other planets and pairs
The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Gemini Moon and Leo Moon compatibility reads these two signs through that layer. A Leo Venus has other partners too. With a Taurus Venus, the pair forms a square, in Taurus Venus and Leo Venus compatibility. With an Aries Venus, it forms a fire trine, in Aries Venus and Leo Venus compatibility.
A Gemini Venus next to a Cancer Venus is covered in Gemini Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility. For a Gemini Venus with a Virgo Venus, see Gemini and Virgo Venus compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a sextile is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 16.
Frequently asked questions
Are Venus in Gemini and Venus in Leo compatible?
They form a sextile, which Ptolemy called harmonious. By whole signs, they also behold each other. At an 8 degree orb, 46.19 percent of these couples have a true sextile. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Gemini Venus and Leo Venus couple?
About one couple in 70, or 1.43 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks tenth of the 78 Venus pairs and third of the 12 sextile pairs.
Why do so many of these couples include a Cancer Sun?
Cancer is the most likely Sun sign for both a Gemini Venus and a Leo Venus. So 50.9 percent of these couples have at least one Cancer Sun.
Can a Gemini Venus and a Leo Venus share a Sun sign?
Yes, in three ways: Gemini, Cancer or Leo. Together, that covers 13.02 percent of these couples, about one in eight.
Do Gemini and Leo behold each other?
By whole signs, yes: Robbins lists them first in his note 83. By exact degrees, as Lilly read it, only 0.51 percent of couples have Venuses on mirror points within 3 degrees.
