Moon square Saturn: the Moon and Saturn glyphs on a chart wheel, at a right angle, with the square glyph

Moon Square Saturn: Some Moons Get It Once, Some Three Times

Moon square Saturn is not rare. About one birth chart in eleven has it. But right now, the sky is adding a second version of it to millions of charts. From 2026 to 2028, Saturn moves through Aries, and from there it squares every Moon in Cancer and every Moon in Capricorn. Some of those Moons get hit once, in a few weeks. Others get hit three times, over nine months. This guide shows which is which.

We cover the three things people look for. First, what Moon square Saturn means in a birth chart. Next, the two kinds of transit: Saturn squaring your Moon, and the Moon squaring Saturn twice a month. Last, what the square does between two people.

First, a few words. An aspect is an angle between two planets, as seen from Earth. A square is an angle of 90 degrees, a quarter of the circle. The orb is the gap we allow on either side of the exact angle. With a 3 degree orb, a square counts anything from 87 to 93 degrees apart.

What Moon square Saturn means in a birth chart

Picture your chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life, and the planets are the furniture. A square puts two pieces at right angles. They face different ways, so each one gets in the other’s path. Our page on the square aspect explains the angle on its own.

The Moon is the soft chair in that house. In astrology it stands for feelings, needs, habits and the sense of home. It asks, “Do I feel safe? Am I cared for?” Our guide to the Moon in astrology covers that role in full.

Saturn is the heavy oak shelf. It stands for time, rules, limits, duty and slow work. It asks, “Will this last? Did I earn it?” Our page on Saturn and its 29-year cycle sets out the planet in depth.

Now put them at right angles. The need for comfort runs into the voice of duty. Feelings come up, and something in you asks if they are allowed. That is the core of the square.

What the old and new books say

In the second century, Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos, the oldest full handbook of Western astrology. In Book I, chapter 13, he sorts the angles. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition discordant. He also describes Saturn as cold and dry, and the Moon as moist. In that old picture, Saturn chills what the Moon warms.

In 1940, the German astrologer Reinhold Ebertin wrote The Combination of Stellar Influences. It is a handbook of planet pairs. He links Moon and Saturn contacts with self-control, a strong sense of duty and feelings held back. He also links them with low moods and a sense of being alone.

Liz Greene gave the pair a kinder reading. In Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil (1976), she treats Saturn as the place where a person feels a lack. Over time, that person builds the skill that fills the gap. With the Moon, the lack is ease and care. The skill is the power to give yourself steady care, on purpose.

Sue Tompkins, in Aspects in Astrology (2002), reads any square as friction that asks for action. In her view, a square is a task, not a verdict. Stephen Arroyo makes a close point. He reads Saturn contacts as areas where we grow through effort and time, not through luck.

Put together, the tradition draws Moon square Saturn like this:

  • Strong feelings kept behind a calm face.
  • An early sense of duty, as if you had to grow up fast.
  • A fear that asking for care will lead to a “no”.
  • Comfort found in routine, plans and hard work.
  • A slow build, per tradition, toward a steady, earned kind of calm.

That is a reading, not a fact about any person. Astrology is not a science. No chart feature makes anyone cold or sad, and none sets a fate. The sign, the house and the rest of the chart change how the square plays out.

Square or conjunction: what changes

Moon and Saturn can also meet at 0 degrees. That is a conjunction: the two sit side by side. Our page on Moon conjunct Saturn covers that version. In a conjunction, the two act as one. Each feeling comes with Saturn’s caution built in.

The square is different. The two pieces stay apart and pull in two ways. You feel the need, and you feel the brake, as two separate things.

Waxing or waning: which side the Moon is on

A square can form on either side. The Moon can sit 90 degrees ahead of Saturn in the order of the signs, or 90 degrees behind it. In our sample, the split was even, at 50.0 percent each. So neither form is rarer.

The signs matter more. A Moon in Cancer square Saturn in Aries is read as a push to act. A Moon in Taurus square Saturn in Leo is read as the most stubborn form.

Moon square Saturn natal: how common is it?

Few pages say how many people have this square. So we counted.

We drew 200,000 moments at random between 1950 and 2010. Each moment had the same chance, so this counts time, not real births. For each one, we took the places of the Moon and Saturn from the Swiss Ephemeris. That is the standard table of planet positions used by chart software. We used the tropical zodiac, the one tied to the seasons. Then we measured the gap between the two.

The Moon was square Saturn within 8 degrees in 8.88 percent of the moments. That is about one chart in eleven. With a tight 3 degree orb, the share falls to 3.27 percent, about one chart in thirty.

Birth decade Moon square Saturn, 8 degree orb
The 1950s 8.89 percent of the time.
The 1960s 8.93 percent of the time.
The 1970s 8.67 percent of the time.
The 1980s 8.99 percent of the time.
The 1990s 8.68 percent of the time.
The 2000s 9.13 percent of the time.

The row is flat. Every decade lands near 9 percent.

The reason is the Moon’s speed. It goes all the way round the zodiac in about 27.3 days. On each lap, it passes both of Saturn’s squares. Saturn barely moves in that time. So the share is close to pure geometry. An 8 degree orb makes a window 16 degrees wide. There are two windows on the circle. Two times 16, divided by 360, is 8.9 percent.

We checked it a second way. Instead of random moments, we stepped through the same sixty years every 2.4 hours. That gave 8.90 percent at 8 degrees and 3.33 percent at 3 degrees. The two routes agree.

One warning. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day. In one pass, it stays within 8 degrees of the exact square for about 29 hours. So you need a birth time. Born in the morning, you might have the aspect. Born that night, you might not.

Saturn square Moon transit: who is in it from 2026 to 2028

A transit is what happens when a planet in today’s sky reaches a point in your birth chart. Here the moving planet is Saturn, and the point is your birth Moon. This is the slow version of the square, and it lasts for months.

Saturn takes about 29 years to go round the zodiac. It squares your birth Moon twice on each lap. Right now it is in Aries. It came back into Aries on 14 February 2026, and it leaves for Taurus on 13 April 2028. Our page on Saturn in Aries gives the full set of dates.

A planet in Aries squares the signs 90 degrees away. Those are Cancer and Capricorn. So if your birth Moon is in Cancer or Capricorn, Saturn will square it at some point in this window. The degree of your Moon tells you when. A Moon at 10 degrees Cancer meets Saturn at 10 degrees Aries.

Once or three times: the retrograde loops

Here is the twist. Saturn does not move in a straight line. Each year, it seems to stop, move backwards for a few months, stop again, and go forward. That backward drift is called retrograde motion. It is an effect of our view from a moving Earth. The points where Saturn seems to stand still are called stations.

Each loop makes Saturn cross the same stretch of sky three times. In 2026, that stretch runs from 7.9 to 14.7 degrees of Aries. In 2027, it runs from 21.0 to 27.9 degrees. A Moon square to a degree inside a loop gets three exact hits. A Moon outside the loops gets one.

We worked out the exact dates with the Swiss Ephemeris. For each degree, we stepped through the days and narrowed down each crossing. Dates are in UTC. Here is a sample:

Your birth Moon at Exact squares from Saturn How long within 1 degree.
5 degrees Cancer or Capricorn One hit, 27 March 2026 About 16 days.
8 degrees Cancer or Capricorn 21 April 2026, 2 December 2026, 19 December 2026 About 87 days in all.
10 degrees Cancer or Capricorn 8 May 2026, 21 October 2026, 28 January 2027 About 72 days in all.
12 degrees Cancer or Capricorn 29 May 2026, 25 September 2026, 19 February 2027 About 69 days in all.
18 degrees Cancer or Capricorn One hit, 10 April 2027 About 16 days.
22 degrees Cancer or Capricorn 13 May 2027, 20 November 2027, 25 January 2028 About 113 days in all.
25 degrees Cancer or Capricorn 11 June 2027, 10 October 2027, 1 March 2028 About 67 days in all.
29 degrees Cancer or Capricorn One hit, 9 April 2028 About 16 days.

A Moon at 18 degrees gets a short, clean pass of about two weeks. A Moon at 22 degrees has Saturn near it for about 113 days, spread over nine months. Same sign, same transit, very different length.

The early degrees had a preview. Saturn first touched Aries from 25 May to 1 September 2025, then slipped back into Pisces. So a Moon at 0 to 2 degrees of Cancer or Capricorn felt the square in 2025, and again in early 2026.

What the tradition says about this transit

Astrologers read Saturn square the Moon as a time of testing for home, family and inner comfort. Old habits can feel too tight. Duties at home can grow. Feelings you have put off ask to be dealt with.

The three-hit version is read as a story in three acts. The first hit raises the issue. The middle one, during the retrograde, asks you to look back. The last one, when Saturn moves forward again, is read as the time to settle it. That is a reading, not a forecast.

After Aries: the next Moons in line

When Saturn enters Taurus on 13 April 2028, the square moves on. A planet in Taurus squares Leo and Aquarius. So from 2028, it is Moons in those two signs that meet Saturn’s square.

Moon square Saturn transit: the twice-a-month version

The fast version runs the other way. The moving Moon squares Saturn in the sky, or your own birth Saturn. Because the Moon is so quick, this happens about twice a month. In 2026, we counted 27 exact squares between the Moon and Saturn in the sky. Each one stays within 1 degree for about 3.6 hours.

With Saturn in Aries, these squares fall when the Moon is in Cancer or Capricorn. Here are the next exact ones, from Swiss Ephemeris positions. Times are in UTC. For New York, subtract four hours until 1 November 2026, and five hours after that until 14 March 2027.

Exact square (UTC) Moon and Saturn at the time.
17 October 2026, 09:50 Moon in Capricorn, Saturn at 10°18′ Aries.
30 October 2026, 17:35 Moon in Cancer, Saturn at 9°22′ Aries.
13 November 2026, 13:52 Moon in Capricorn, Saturn at 8°35′ Aries.
26 November 2026, 23:47 Moon in Cancer, Saturn at 8°06′ Aries.
10 December 2026, 19:12 Moon in Capricorn, Saturn at 7°55′ Aries.
24 December 2026, 10:39 Moon in Cancer, Saturn at 8°05′ Aries.
7 January 2027, 02:43 Moon in Capricorn, Saturn at 8°35′ Aries.
21 January 2027, 00:17 Moon in Cancer, Saturn at 9°25′ Aries.
3 February 2027, 12:52 Moon in Capricorn, Saturn at 10°29′ Aries.
17 February 2027, 14:04 Moon in Cancer, Saturn at 11°50′ Aries.
3 March 2027, 01:37 Moon in Capricorn, Saturn at 13°18′ Aries.
17 March 2027, 02:29 Moon in Cancer, Saturn at 14°58′ Aries.
30 March 2027, 16:12 Moon in Capricorn, Saturn at 16°39′ Aries.
13 April 2027, 13:47 Moon in Cancer, Saturn at 18°24′ Aries.

Look at the Saturn column. From October to December 2026, the degree goes down. Saturn is retrograde. Then it turns and climbs again. The Moon squares it at the same few degrees for months.

The tradition reads this fast transit as a mood, not a season. It is a few hours of feeling tired, flat or a bit alone. Then it passes.

Moon square Saturn synastry

Synastry is the art of laying two birth charts on top of each other to read a relationship. Our guide to synastry charts explains the method step by step. Here, one person’s Moon sits at 90 degrees from the other person’s Saturn.

The tradition reads the Moon person as the one who feels. The Saturn person is the one who sets limits. The Moon person can feel judged, held back or not warm enough to the other. The Saturn person can feel that the Moon person asks for too much, too soon.

That is the hard side. The other side is staying power. Saturn contacts are read as glue in long bonds. Many astrologers count them among the links that keep a couple together through work, money and time. The square asks both people to learn. The Moon person learns patience. The Saturn person learns to show care in words, not just in deeds.

Check both directions. Your Moon can square their Saturn while their Moon is free. And without birth times, a Moon square in synastry is only a guess.

How to check your own chart

To check your own chart, find the Moon’s degree, which needs a birth time, and Saturn’s degree. A gap of 82 to 98 degrees is the square at an 8 degree orb.

Our guide to astrological aspects shows how to read every other angle in your chart.

FAQ

What does Moon square Saturn mean?

It is a 90 degree angle between the Moon and Saturn. The tradition reads it as a clash between the need for comfort and the voice of duty. Feelings are strong but held back. Liz Greene reads it as a lack of ease that a person slowly learns to fill on their own.

Is Moon square Saturn rare?

No. In our count of 200,000 random moments from 1950 to 2010, it showed up 8.88 percent of the time with an 8 degree orb. That is about one chart in eleven. With a 3 degree orb, it is about one chart in thirty.

What does it mean when the Moon is squaring a planet?

In the sky, it is a short event. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so a square with any planet stays exact for only a few hours. The tradition reads it as a brief mood colored by that planet. With Saturn, the mood is serious, tired or dutiful.

How long does Saturn square Moon last?

It depends on your Moon’s degree. In 2026 to 2028, a Moon in Cancer or Capricorn outside Saturn’s retrograde loops gets one pass, about 16 days within 1 degree. A Moon inside a loop gets three passes, with 67 to 113 days within 1 degree over about nine months.

What age is your Saturn square?

Saturn squares its own birth place twice per cycle. In our sample of births from 1950 to 2010, the first square came between ages 5.7 and 8.2. The second came between ages 20.9 and 22.8.
