Virgo Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility joins two people whose Venus sits in a weak seat. The old books call Virgo the fall of Venus and Scorpio her exile. Yet the two signs form a sextile, a friendly 60-degree link. And by day, Ptolemy lets Venus keep a share of rule in both signs.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Two weak seats for Venus
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The exile and the fall are its two weak places.
Venus rules Taurus and Libra. Scorpio sits straight across from Taurus, so Venus in Scorpio is in exile, also called detriment. She lives in a house run by Mars, her opposite in the old scheme. Virgo is her fall. Ptolemy explains why in Book I of the Tetrabiblos. Venus is moist by nature, he writes, so her power grows in Pisces, “where the beginning of the moist spring is indicated.” Virgo, across the wheel, stands for the dry autumn. So Venus sinks there.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Who runs the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Virgo Venus | Fall, her lowest seat. | Mercury, ruler and exalted. |
| Scorpio Venus | Exile, a house run by her opposite. | Mars, its ruler. |
A weak rank is a label from old books. It is not a flaw in a person. In Virgo she takes on Mercury’s care for detail. In Scorpio she takes on Mars’s depth and grip. Our page on Venus in Virgo explains how a fall differs from an exile. Our page on Venus in Scorpio looks at the exile side.
A fall and an exile that share rule by day
Ptolemy adds a second layer in chapter 18. He sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of three signs each. Each triangle gets its own rulers, split by day and by night.
- Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn form the earth triangle. Ptolemy gave it to “the moon and Venus; the moon governs it by night and Venus by day.”
- Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces form the water triangle. Mars rules it, and “the moon by night and Venus by day are co-rulers.”
So Venus has a foot in both signs of this pair. A day chart is a birth with the Sun above the horizon. In a day chart, a Virgo Venus keeps a share of rule over her own triangle. So does a Scorpio Venus. The weak rank stays, but it is not the whole story.
Venus has four weak places in all: Aries and Scorpio for exile, and Virgo for fall. Six Venus pairs join two weak Venuses. Two of them mix a fall with an exile: this one, and the pair of Aries and Virgo. Of all six, this is the only pair whose signs form one of Ptolemy’s four aspects. The other five are same-sign pairs or signs five apart.
| Pair of weak Venuses | Link by sign | Venus rules by day in both signs. |
|---|---|---|
| Virgo and Scorpio | Sextile, 60 degrees | Yes. |
| Virgo and Virgo | Same sign | Yes. |
| Scorpio and Scorpio | Same sign | Yes. |
| Aries and Virgo | Five signs apart | No, only in Virgo. |
| Aries and Scorpio | Five signs apart | No, only in Scorpio. |
| Aries and Aries | Same sign | No. |
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Virgo | 8.41 percent | Fifth of twelve. |
| Venus in Scorpio | 8.11 percent | Eleventh of twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Virgo and the other Venus in Scorpio? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.36 percent, or about one couple in 73. That ranks 47th of the 78 Venus pairs.
| Venus sextile pair | One couple in | Rank among twelve sextiles. |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus and Cancer | About 68 couples. | Most common. |
| Virgo and Scorpio | About 73 couples. | Eighth. |
| Scorpio and Capricorn | About 77 couples. | Rarest. |
A sextile by sign, and how many are exact
Ptolemy’s chapter 13 lists four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. Both join signs “of the same kind.” Virgo and Scorpio are both feminine signs, so their sextile fits his rule. In element terms, an earth sign meets a water sign.
But a sextile by sign is not always a sextile by degree. Each sign spans 30 degrees. A Venus at the start of Virgo and one at the end of Scorpio sit almost 90 degrees apart. The margin allowed around an exact aspect is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.
| Orb | Couples with a true sextile | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 18.98 percent | About one in five. |
| 6 degrees | 35.95 percent | About one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.16 percent | Just under half. |
| 10 degrees | 55.47 percent | Just over half. |
These values are nearly the same for every Venus pair. They are not a trait of this one. One detail is. When the Virgo Venus sits early and the Scorpio Venus sits late, the gap nears 90 degrees. That is a square across the sign line. At an 8-degree orb, it happens in 3.54 percent of these couples.
Ptolemy’s other bonds, read two ways
Ptolemy names two more ties between signs, and each can be read two ways. One reading uses exact degrees. The other uses whole signs, as the translator Frank Robbins lays out in his notes.
The first tie is “commanding” and “obeying,” in chapter 14. It joins signs that sit at equal distance from an equinox sign, since they take equal time to rise. The sign in the summer half commands.
- By degree, the mirror line runs through 0 degrees of Libra. Virgo mirrors Libra, and Scorpio mirrors Leo. So Virgo and Scorpio do not mirror each other. The two mirror images touch only near the first degree of each sign. At a 3-degree orb, that covers 0.51 percent of couples.
- By whole sign, Robbins lists the pairs in note 80: Taurus and Pisces, Gemini and Aquarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Sagittarius, and Virgo and Scorpio. On that reading, Virgo stands one sign before Libra and Scorpio one sign after. Virgo lies in the summer half, so Virgo commands and Scorpio obeys.
The second tie is “beholding,” in chapter 15. It joins signs where the days have equal length.
- By degree, the mirror line runs through 0 degrees of Cancer. Virgo mirrors Aries, and Scorpio mirrors Aquarius.
- By whole sign, Robbins lists the pairs in note 83: Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, and Aquarius and Sagittarius.
Neither reading of chapter 15 joins Virgo to Scorpio. So the pair holds a sextile on any reading, and a chain of command on the whole-sign reading only.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees. Ptolemy knew the rule: Venus “is never more than two signs removed from the sun.” So each Venus sign goes with only five Sun signs.
| Sun sign | Share of Virgo Venus people | Share of Scorpio Venus people. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 8.65 percent | None. |
| Leo | 29.85 percent | None. |
| Virgo | 23.66 percent | 9.31 percent. |
| Libra | 28.93 percent | 29.72 percent. |
| Scorpio | 8.91 percent | 23.48 percent. |
| Sagittarius | None | 28.39 percent. |
| Capricorn | None | 9.11 percent. |
In calendar terms, Virgo Venus people are born between about June 21 and November 21. Scorpio Venus people are born between about August 23 and January 19. The two lists share three Sun signs: Virgo, Libra and Scorpio. Libra is the strong link. It holds close to three in ten people on each side.
The likeliest couple: a Virgo Sun and a Libra Sun
Now combine two partners. We multiplied the Sun sign shares for each and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Virgo with a Libra counts once.
| Sun pair | Share of these couples | Rank. |
|---|---|---|
| Virgo and Libra | 9.72 percent | First, about one couple in ten. |
| Libra and Scorpio | 9.4 percent | Second, close behind. |
| Leo and Libra | 8.9 percent | Third. |
| Libra and Libra | 8.6 percent | Fourth. |
| Leo and Sagittarius | 8.5 percent | Fifth. |
| Libra and Sagittarius | 8.2 percent | Sixth. |
No single mix wins by much. The top one covers fewer than one couple in ten, so it is a lean, not a rule. Still, a Libra Sun shows up in five of the top six. Libra is the sign that sits between the two Venuses.
The two Suns form a sextile in 25.1 percent of couples, like the two Venuses. They share a sign in 12.89 percent, about one in eight. Most of that is a pair of Libra Suns, at 8.6 percent. They stand opposite in under 1 percent, and only as a Cancer Sun with a Capricorn Sun.
A Virgo Sun and a Scorpio Sun are a different couple
Many readers land here because one partner is a Virgo Sun and the other a Scorpio Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So a Virgo Sun and a Scorpio Sun hold this exact Venus pair in roughly one couple in 18.
That Sun pair has its own page, Virgo and Scorpio compatibility by Sun sign. It counts how many of those couples form a true sextile.
Turn it around. In 41.58 percent of Virgo Venus and Scorpio Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.55 percent, both do. Across all 78 pairs this share only moves between about 41 and 42 percent, so it sets no pair apart. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Shared ground. Both signs are feminine, and both Venuses work behind the scenes. Love is shown more than said.
- The trade. Virgo brings Mercury’s calm reasoning. Scorpio brings Mars’s nerve for hard talks.
- The sore spot. The Virgo side can pick at small things. The Scorpio side can hold on to a hurt. Each can read the other’s habit as a test.
A simple habit helps. When something stings, each partner names it the same day, in one plain sentence. Then both say what they want next. Old texts read the sextile as an opening that needs a step from both sides. In that logic, the link works when both people use it.
Neighbors on the wheel
The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Virgo Moon and Scorpio Moon compatibility reads the same two signs through that layer. The other pair that mixes a fall with an exile is Aries Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility. One sign back from Virgo, Leo Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility joins two signs Ptolemy called disjunct.
Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a sextile is not a promise, and a weak rank is not a warning. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19, with his notes 80 and 83.
Frequently asked questions
Are Virgo Venus and Scorpio Venus compatible?
The two signs form a sextile, which Ptolemy called harmonious. Both Venuses hold a weak rank, a fall and an exile, but Venus shares rule by day in both signs. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Virgo Venus and Scorpio Venus couple?
About one couple in 73, or 1.36 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 47th of the 78 Venus pairs and eighth of the 12 sextile pairs.
What Sun signs do these partners have?
The likeliest mix is a Virgo Sun with a Libra Sun, in 9.72 percent of these couples. A Libra Sun and a Scorpio Sun come a close second. The Suns share a sign in about one couple in eight.
Does Virgo command Scorpio in Ptolemy?
On the whole-sign reading in Robbins’s note 80, yes: Virgo commands and Scorpio obeys. On the degree reading, Virgo mirrors Libra and Scorpio mirrors Leo, so there is no such tie.
Why is Venus weak in both Virgo and Scorpio?
Virgo is her fall, the dry sign across from her exaltation in Pisces. Scorpio is her exile, the sign across from her home in Taurus, and it belongs to Mars.
