Leo Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility joins two signs that sit side by side. Yet in the old books, Venus changes a great deal in that one step. In Leo she is a guest in the Sun’s house. In Virgo she reaches her fall, her lowest seat. Ptolemy also counted these two signs as “disjunct,” with no tie at all.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
From the Sun’s house into Venus’s fall
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The exile and the fall are its weak places.
Ptolemy sets out the homes in chapter 17 of Book I of the Tetrabiblos. Leo goes to the Sun. Virgo goes to Mercury, whose two signs sit next to the houses of the Sun and Moon. Venus has no major rank in Leo. The old word for that is peregrine, meaning a guest. Virgo is her fall. Venus is moist by nature, Ptolemy writes, and gains power in Pisces, “where the beginning of the moist spring is indicated.” Virgo, across the wheel, stands for the dry autumn. So Venus sinks there, while dry Mercury is exalted.

Chapter 18 adds the rulers of each triangle of signs. Leo is in the fire triangle, ruled by the Sun by day and Jupiter by night. Venus has no share there. Virgo is in the earth triangle, which Ptolemy gave to “the moon and Venus; the moon governs it by night and Venus by day.” So the Virgo Venus, weak as her rank is, keeps a share of rule in a day chart. A day chart is a birth with the Sun above the horizon.

How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Leo and the other Venus in Virgo? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.42 percent, or about one couple in 70. That ranks 16th of the 78 Venus pairs. Both signs sit above the even split, so the pair lands near the top.

Disjunct on every reading of Ptolemy
Ptolemy’s chapter 13 lists four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Signs one apart form none of them. The 30-degree link between them is called a semi-sextile. Later astrologers added it as a minor aspect, but Ptolemy does not name it. In chapter 16 he calls such signs “disjunct” and “alien.” Signs one sign apart, he writes, “are as it were averted from one another.”
He makes one exception. Two signs are not disjunct if they share one of two other ties. Each tie can be read by exact degree or by whole sign, as the translator Frank Robbins lays out in his notes.
- “Commanding” and “obeying,” in chapter 14, join signs at equal distance from an equinox. By degree, Leo mirrors Scorpio and Virgo mirrors Libra. By whole sign, Robbins’s note 80 pairs Leo with Sagittarius and Virgo with Scorpio.
- “Beholding,” in chapter 15, joins signs where the days have equal length. By degree, Leo mirrors Taurus and Virgo mirrors Aries. By whole sign, Robbins’s note 83 pairs Leo with Gemini and Virgo with Taurus.
No reading joins Leo to Virgo. So the pair stays disjunct whichever way you read Ptolemy. Of the 24 pairs of signs one or five apart, the degree readings rescue eight. That leaves 16 disjunct pairs, and this is one. The whole-sign readings rescue none, so on that view all 24 stay disjunct.
Degrees add a twist. The two Venuses can sit close across the sign line, as with Venus at 29 degrees of Leo and 1 degree of Virgo. They can also sit 60 degrees apart, from early Leo to late Virgo. At an 8-degree orb, 7.2 percent of these couples form a conjunction or a sextile across the sign line. A true semi-sextile, within 8 degrees, links 46.14 percent.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees. Ptolemy knew the rule: Venus “is never more than two signs removed from the sun.” So each Venus sign goes with only five Sun signs.

In calendar terms, Leo Venus people are born between about May 21 and October 23. Virgo Venus people are born between about June 21 and November 21. The two lists share four Sun signs out of five: Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra.
The likeliest Suns: a Leo and a Virgo
Now combine two partners. We multiplied the Sun sign shares for each and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Leo with a Virgo counts once.

The top mix mirrors the Venus pair: a Leo Sun and a Virgo Sun. It covers about one couple in seven, so it is a lean, not a rule. Most of these couples have other Suns.
The two Suns sit in next-door signs in 37.3 percent of couples. They sit two signs apart, a sextile, in 24.2 percent. They share one sign in 19.1 percent, about one in five. They form a square in 13.5 percent and a trine in 5.1 percent. They never stand opposite.
A Leo Sun and a Virgo Sun are a different couple
Many readers land here because one partner is a Leo Sun and the other a Virgo Sun. That Sun pair is common. Our page on Leo and Virgo compatibility by Sun sign shows it is the most common of all 78 Sun pairs among US births. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So a Leo Sun and a Virgo Sun hold this exact Venus pair in roughly one couple in 18.
Turn it around. In 41.89 percent of Leo Venus and Virgo Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.65 percent, both do. Across all 78 pairs this share only moves between about 41 and 42 percent, so it sets no pair apart. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Two hosts. The Leo Venus answers to the Sun. The Virgo Venus answers to Mercury.
- Two languages of love. Leo shows love with warmth, gifts and praise. Virgo shows it with care, help and small acts.
- The mix. Fire meets earth, and a fixed sign meets a mutable one. Leo holds the line, and Virgo adjusts.
- The sore spot. Leo can hear Virgo’s help as criticism. Virgo can hear Leo’s praise as noise.
A simple habit helps. Each partner names what counts as love for them, in one sentence. Then each does the other’s version once a week. In the old logic, disjunct signs cannot see each other. Read that way, this couple has to describe what the other cannot see.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a disjunct pair is not a doomed pair, and a fall is not a warning. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19, with his notes 80 and 83.
