Cancer Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility is a water trine. The two signs sit four steps apart, in the same element, at one of the easy angles of the old books. But the two Venuses do not stand on equal ground. Cancer is the Moon’s sign, where Venus holds no major rank. Scorpio is a sign of Mars, where the tradition says Venus is in exile.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to see what else comes with this pair. Cancer is the sign Venus visits most, and Scorpio is the second rarest. And the Suns tell a dry story. These partners share a Sun sign in fewer than one couple in 100, and their likeliest Suns are fire and air, not water. Read this page as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
A guest in the Moon’s house, an exile in Mars’s
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Each planet has a home, or domicile, where it rules. The sign across from a home is called its detriment, or exile. That later term comes from authors such as William Lilly, whose Christian Astrology came out in 1647.

Ptolemy, in Book I, chapter 17, of the Tetrabiblos, gave each planet its houses. He wrote in Alexandria around 150 AD. Venus got Taurus and Libra. Mars got Aries and Scorpio. Scorpio sits straight across from Taurus, so a Scorpio Venus is as far from her own house as the wheel allows. Cancer is none of these. It is not her home, her exile, her place of honor or her fall.
Lilly saw a planet in exile as one that works harder for less. That is a label from old books, not a flaw in a person. Here it means Venus speaks with Mars’s accent: intense, private and hard to sway.

One triangle, three rulers
Ptolemy adds a second kind of rank in chapter 18. He sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of three, one for each element. Each triangle gets a ruler by day and one by night. A day chart means a birth with the Sun above the horizon.

Mars leads the water triangle, because Scorpio is his house. Since the water signs are feminine, Ptolemy adds Venus by day and the Moon by night. Both partners in this couple stand in that one triangle. So in a day chart, each Venus shares rule of her own element, even the one in exile.
The rulers of the two signs have their own tangle. In chapter 19, Ptolemy puts the fall of Mars in Cancer and the fall of the Moon in Scorpio. A fall is a planet’s lowest seat, across from its place of honor. So the ruler of each sign is at its lowest in the other sign. What Ptolemy says about the trine
Cancer and Scorpio sit four signs apart. That makes a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. In chapter 13, Ptolemy lists four aspects. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious, because they join signs of the same kind. Here both signs are water, and both are feminine. By the book, this is the easiest link two signs can have.
He names two more ties in chapters 14 and 15. Some signs “command” and “obey.” Some “behold” each other, because the Sun gives them days of equal length. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, shows in his notes 80 and 83 that these pairs can be read two ways. Read by exact points, Scorpio beholds Aquarius and Cancer beholds Gemini. Read by whole signs, Scorpio beholds Pisces, and Cancer, the solstice sign, has no partner. Either way, no such tie joins Cancer and Scorpio.
Lilly also used mirror points in degrees. A contra-antiscion is the point mirrored across the line from 0 degrees Aries to 0 degrees Libra. For this pair, a mirror link is only possible at the very end of both signs. We counted it. Within 3 degrees, it happens in 0.5 percent of couples, one in 200. The trine is the real tie.
The most common Venus meets one of the rarest
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short run of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Only Capricorn, at 8.04 percent, gets less of Venus’s time than Scorpio. Pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Cancer and the other Venus in Scorpio? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.40 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 28th of the 78 Venus pairs.
Water Venuses, dry Suns
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

The two lists meet on one sign only, Virgo, and it sits at the thin end of both. So these partners share a Sun sign in 0.81 percent of couples, about one in 124. In dates, Cancer Venus people are born between about April 20 and September 22. Scorpio Venus people are born between about August 23 and January 19. The windows touch for one month, the month of Virgo.
Which Sun pair turns up most? A Leo Sun with the Cancer Venus and a Libra Sun with the Scorpio Venus. That covers 8.82 percent of these couples. Only Virgo with Virgo shares this top Sun pair. Next come Gemini with Libra, at 8.72 percent, and Leo with Sagittarius, at 8.42 percent. None of these Suns is a water sign. Less than one couple in eleven fits the top mix, so treat it as a lean.
What are the odds that both Suns are in water, like both Venuses? Only when one partner is a Cancer Sun and the other a Scorpio Sun. That happens in 5.65 percent of couples, about one in 18.

Only one couple in four has a trine between the Suns as well. For the other three, the Sun story differs from the Venus story. Read both.
Cancer and Scorpio by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here because they are a Cancer Sun and a Scorpio Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. We turned the counts around. For a Cancer Sun, Venus is in Cancer 24.10 percent of the time. For a Scorpio Sun, Venus is in Scorpio 23.26 percent of the time. The crossed form cannot happen. A Cancer Sun is too far from Scorpio to carry a Scorpio Venus.
Put together, a couple with a Cancer Sun and a Scorpio Sun has this Venus pair in 5.61 percent of cases, about one in 18. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
Turn it around once more. In 41.89 percent of Cancer Venus and Scorpio Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 21st of the 78 pairs.
The trine in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses four signs apart can be anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. The exact trine is 120. The margin allowed around an exact angle is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to count how many couples come close.

The first column is about the same for every Venus pair, so it is not a trait of this couple. The second is. If the Cancer Venus sits late in its sign and the Scorpio Venus early in its own, the gap can shrink to near 90 degrees. That is a square, a tense angle, under a sign pair the books call easy. At an 8 degree orb, 3.61 percent of couples have one.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Same element. Water is cold and moist. Both partners start from feeling, and neither needs the other to explain a mood.
- Start and hold. Cancer is cardinal, a sign that opens a season. Scorpio is fixed, a sign that holds one. One opens the door, and the other keeps it shut to the world.
- Shelter and depth. The Cancer Venus trusts what feels safe. The Scorpio Venus trusts what it has tested.
- The sore spot. Both remember hurts. A quarrel between two water signs can go quiet and stay there.
A practical habit helps. Let the Cancer partner name the hurt early. Let the Scorpio partner say what they need to trust again. The trine gives them a shared language, but it still has to be spoken.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a trine is not a promise, and exile is not a warning. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The reverse figures, from Sun sign to Venus sign, divide the same joint counts by the time the Sun spends in each sign. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
