The North Node is not a planet. Nothing sits there. It is a point in space, and yet it changes sign on a date you can look up. On July 27, 2026, UTC, it leaves Pisces and enters Aquarius. In New York, that is the evening of July 26.
This guide explains the North Node meaning in plain words. It gives you a dated table to find your own North Node from your birth date. And it shows the sky behind the symbol: eclipses, the 18.6-year cycle, and why two apps can disagree.
What is the North Node in astrology?
The Moon circles the Earth on a tilted path. The Sun traces its own path across our sky over the year. Astrologers call that path the ecliptic. Two tilted circles cross at two points. These two points are the lunar nodes.
The North Node is the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic going north. The South Node is the point where it crosses going south. The two always sit exactly opposite each other. If your North Node is at 10° Leo, your South Node is at 10° Aquarius.
Its symbol looks like a horseshoe: ☊. The South Node uses the same shape upside down: ☋. In medieval Europe they were the Dragon’s Head and the Dragon’s Tail.
Picture your birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life, like money, home or work. The planets are the furniture. The nodes are not furniture. They are a line drawn across the house, through two rooms that face each other. One end of the line points forward. The other end points back.
The North Node meaning: a direction, not a fate
The North Node meaning depends on which school of astrology you ask. There are three main readings, and they do not say the same thing.
The oldest reading comes from India. In Vedic astrology, the nodes are Rahu and Ketu, and they count among the nine grahas, or seizers. In the old story, a demon drank the nectar of the gods. Vishnu cut off his head. The head became Rahu and the body became Ketu. Ever since, they chase the Sun and Moon and swallow them now and then. That is the myth of the eclipse.
The Greek-speaking astrologers of the Hellenistic period, from about 100 BC to 600 AD, are where Western astrology begins. As far as their surviving texts show, they used the nodes as a rule of strength. A planet near the North Node gained, and a planet near the South Node lost. They wrote nothing about life purpose.
The modern reading is the one you find online. In 1975, Martin Schulman published Karmic Astrology: The Moon’s Nodes and Reincarnation. He read the South Node as habits carried in from the past, even from past lives. He read the North Node as the lesson of this life. Later, Jeffrey Wolf Green built a whole school on this idea, called evolutionary astrology. Green reads the nodes with Pluto, as a map of how the soul grows over time.
So in modern terms, the North Node is a direction. It points to skills that feel new and a bit awkward. Nothing forces you to go north. The tradition only says the road north is where the growth is.
What is my North Node? Find it by birth date
You do not need a North Node calculator for the sign. The node moves slowly, about 1.5 years per sign, so your birth date is enough. Find your birth date in the left column below. The right column is your North Node sign. Your South Node is the opposite sign.
Notice one odd thing. The dates run backward through the zodiac, from Aries to Pisces to Aquarius. The nodes move against the order of the signs. Astrologers call that motion retrograde, which means the point slides backward through the zodiac as seen from Earth.

All dates are in UTC, which is London winter time. A change dated for early morning UTC falls on the evening before in the United States. If you were born on a change date, or a day either side, the date alone is not enough. You need a full chart with your birth time.
The sign is only half the answer. The house, or room, depends on your birth time and place. Your Ascendant, the sign rising in the east when you were born, sets which room the node lands in. True node or mean node: why two apps disagree
There are two ways to place the North Node, and chart tools pick one or the other.
The mean node is a smooth average. It always moves backward, at a fixed speed of about 0.053° a day. The true node follows the real crossing point, with all the small wobbles of the Moon’s path. Most of the time the true node moves backward too. But it moves forward 25.8% of the time. That is why it can cross a border, step back, and cross again a few days later, as in January 1980.
We measured the gap between the two from 1950 to 2010, every 2.4 hours. The average gap is 0.96°. The largest is 1.95°, in November 1959. Yet that small gap puts them in different signs 3.3% of the time. If two apps give you two North Node signs, you were born near a border. Neither app is broken. They use different methods. This guide uses the true node.
The North Node in 2026
The year 2026 opens with the true North Node in Pisces, at about 11°. It keeps sliding back through Pisces until July 27, 2026, UTC. On that day it enters Aquarius. It stays there until March 26, 2028, when it moves into Capricorn. The mean node makes the same move a little later, on August 18, 2026.

Why eclipses follow the nodes
An eclipse needs three bodies in a straight line: the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. Each month brings a New Moon and a Full Moon. Most months, the Moon passes above or below the Sun’s line. An eclipse only comes when a New Moon or Full Moon lands close to a node. That is the whole rule.
So the nodes set the eclipse calendar. We computed every eclipse of 2026 and 2027 with the Swiss Ephemeris. For each one, the table gives its distance from the nearest node. For a solar eclipse that is the Sun’s place. For a lunar eclipse it is the Moon’s.

Every eclipse falls within 16° of a node. The total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027, sits just 1.6° from it. The faint penumbral ones, where the Moon only grazes the Earth’s outer shadow, sit farthest away. On February 17, 2026, the node was still in Pisces, but the eclipse fell in Aquarius. Eclipses reach the next pair of signs before the node does.
Your nodal return: the 18.6-year clock
The nodes take 18.6 years to go all the way around the zodiac. So every 18.6 years, the North Node in the sky comes back to the spot of your birth North Node. Astrologers call this the nodal return.
We timed it with the mean node, which moves at an even pace. One full lap takes 18.61 years. That puts your nodal returns at these ages:
- First return at 18.6 years old.
- Second return at 37.2 years old.
- Third return at 55.8 years old.
- Fourth return at 74.4 years old.
- Fifth return at 93.1 years old.
The true node wobbles, so its timing shifts a little. Over 1,000 random birth moments from 1950 to 2010, the first exact true-node return came at 18.64 years on average, between 18.54 and 18.79. Halfway through each lap, at about 9.3 years, the sky’s node lands on your South Node. Modern astrologers call that the reverse nodal return.

The South Node: the other end of the line
You cannot read the North Node alone. The South Node sits in the opposite sign and the opposite room. If the North Node is in the 5th house, the South Node is in the 11th. In the modern reading, the South Node shows the talents you lean on without effort. The aim is not to drop them. The aim is to use them in the service of the North Node. Rahu and Ketu: the Vedic names
Rahu is the Vedic name for the North Node, and Ketu is the name for the South Node. The point in the sky is the same. The reading is not.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the stars. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. In 2026 the two zodiacs sit about 25° apart. So for most birth dates, your Rahu falls one sign earlier than your Western North Node.
In Indian tradition, Rahu stands for hunger and worldly gain, and Ketu for release and the spiritual path. The two systems share a point, not a story.
How to work with your North Node
Start with the sign and the house from your chart. Read the lines for both in the tables above. Then look at your chart ruler, the planet that rules your rising sign. If your chart ruler sits close to either node, the axis carries more weight in your chart.
Then mark your next nodal return, and the eclipses that fall near your own nodes. The tradition reads those dates as moments when the theme comes up again. The node shows a direction. You choose whether to walk it.
How we calculated these numbers
Every date and figure on this page comes from our own calculation. We used the Swiss Ephemeris, with the tropical zodiac and all times in UTC. We pinned each sign change of the true node by halving the time window again and again. We then ran the table with a second lunar model from the same library. Every date matched to the day, with times up to about one hour apart.
The eclipse dates match the NASA eclipse lists for 2026 and 2027. Astrology is not a science, and these numbers prove no meaning. They only make sure the sky behind the meaning is right.
