There is one thing a chart with a north node in the 11th house can never do. We found it by counting, and we can say exactly how close it gets.
We drew 400,000 birth charts at random for this page. Not one of them broke the rule.
First, the room.
The 11th house is the room full of other people
Picture your chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one slice of life. The planets are the furniture that got moved in.
The 11th room holds the people you did not have to be born with. Friends sit here. So do teams, clubs, causes, guilds and the wide loose network you can call on. Greek writers called it the room of good spirit. Hopes and wishes were filed here too.
The north node is not furniture. It is not a planet, a star, or a rock. The Moon circles Earth on a tilted path. The Sun traces its own path across our sky, and sky readers call that path the ecliptic. The two paths cross at two points. The north node is one crossing. The south node is the other, straight across.

We use whole sign houses on this page. Each house is one whole sign, start to finish. Your rising sign fills the 1st house. The next sign fills the 2nd, and so on round. No sign gets cut in half. Our guide to the whole sign house system explains why that choice changes the answer.
The thing this chart can never do
Your rising degree is the exact spot on the zodiac that was climbing over the horizon when you were born. It is the anchor of the whole chart.
Some charts have the north node sitting right on that spot. Not this one. It cannot happen, and the reason is geometry rather than fate.
Whole sign houses put the 11th house ten signs on from your rising sign. Counted the short way round, that is two signs back. Your rising degree sits inside the first of those signs. The node sits two signs away. Even at the closest possible corner, the gap is a full sign and a bit.
We checked it on all 400,000 charts rather than trusting the reasoning. Out of the 32,669 charts with a north node in the 11th house, the count of nodes within 8 degrees of the rising degree was zero. Not rare. Zero.
Then we measured how close the closest one got. The record across those charts is 30.4 degrees, which lines up with the 30 degrees the geometry predicts.

This matters for a practical reason. If a report tells you your 11th house node is conjunct your rising degree, the report is wrong, or it is not using whole sign houses. That is a fast way to catch a broken chart.
What does sit beside the node here is ordinary. The Sun is within 8 degrees in 4.7 per cent of these charts. The Moon is within 8 degrees in 4.6 per cent. Those two came out level, and they stayed level when we changed the date window, so we report them as equal rather than ranking one above the other.
We also tried counting the node beside the ruler of its sign. That figure moved from 3.3 to 4.5 per cent when we changed the window. A number that unstable is not a finding, so we leave it out.
The far end of the line is a stage you already know
The nodes come in pairs. They sit straight across the chart, six signs apart. In whole sign houses that pairing is exact, with no rounding.
A north node in the 11th house means a south node in the 5th house. There is no other option.
The 5th house is the room of making and playing. Art, sport, romance, children and risk taken for fun all live there. It is the room where the light points at you.
Read as one line, the axis is simple. One end is the solo turn you can already do. The other end is the room where the credit gets shared. The mirror page on a north node in the 5th house walks the same line from the other side, and it tests a different claim on the way.
What a guessed birth hour costs
Two people born the same afternoon can carry the node in two different rooms. The date is shared. The clock is not.
Most free chart tools ask for a birth time. Leave it blank and they set the clock to noon and carry on. The chart still prints. Nothing on it flags the guess. So we priced that guess.
How the test was built
We drew 400,000 births at random between 1950 and 2010. Date and hour were both drawn. Birth spots were spread across the globe, with each band of latitude weighted by how many people live there.
For each birth we worked out the true node from the plane of the Moon orbit, then the rising degree, then the whole sign house. Every chart was run twice. Once with the real hour. Once with the clock forced to local noon.
Then we kept only the charts where the node really sits in the 11th house, and asked where the noon chart had put it.
What came back
Noon landed on the 11th house 8.9 per cent of the time. Pure chance across twelve rooms is 8.3 per cent.
The noon chart carries almost no news about your node house. The wrong answers did not gather in one spot either. The 10th house took 9.0 per cent, a shade more than the right answer. The rest ran from 7.4 to 8.7 per cent.
A rough hour costs you as well. Shift the birth time by a quarter of an hour and the house changes in 12.6 per cent of charts. Shift it by a full hour and it changes in 50.1 per cent. Half the charts.
The reason is plain. The rising degree crosses one whole sign in about two hours. An hour of doubt is half a room of doubt.
An hour off a birth record works. A family story about the evening does not. This is why a birth time matters far more for house work than for sign work.
About one chart in twelve
In our 400,000 charts the north node landed in the 11th house 8.2 per cent of the time. We ran the whole thing again on births spread between 1900 and 2100 and got 8.4 per cent. Even odds across twelve rooms would give 8.33 per cent.
Both runs sit either side of that line, so we quote the pair rather than one number. The honest reading is that the placement is ordinary. The north node has no favourite room.
Aquarius owns this room, and the node is there now
The 11th house is the home of Aquarius, the sign of the group and the odd idea. That link is worth knowing for a second reason. The north node in the sky is crossing Aquarius as you read this.

That is the node in the sky, not the node in your chart. Your birth chart is a snapshot of one moment and it never changes.
The node drifts backward through the zodiac. The mean node, a smoothed average, creeps back 0.052954 degrees a day. It crosses one whole sign in 566.5 days and walks the full circle in 18.613 years.
Two nodes are in use and they disagree. The true node wobbles around the mean one. The gap runs 0.96 degrees on average and reaches 1.98 degrees at worst. The true node also moves forward 25.9 per cent of the time, so the line that the node is always backward holds for the mean node only. A true node crossing takes anywhere from 541 to 633 days.
Valens, Spiller and Rahu: three readings that disagree
People argue about the nodes because three separate schools read them, and the schools do not agree.
The Greek reading: increase and decrease
Vettius Valens wrote in the second century. In that early Greek school the north node adds and the south node removes. Whatever sits near the north node grows. Whatever sits near the south node drains. No past life appears in that reading at all.
The modern karmic reading: a soul with a task
The past life story is recent, and we can date it. Martin Schulman published his book on the nodes in 1975. Jan Spiller followed in 1997 with a bestseller. Those two books built the reading most blogs repeat today.
In that reading a south node in the 5th house shows a soul used to the spotlight. Performing came easy. Being looked at came easy. The north node in the 11th house asks for the harder thing. Join something. Share the credit. Work for an outcome you will not be thanked for by name.
It is a strong story. It is also fifty years old, not two thousand. Say so when you use it.
The Vedic reading: two shadow planets with full rank
Indian sky reading gives the nodes names and bodies. The north node is Rahu. The south node is Ketu. They are not junctions there. They are planets with full standing and long spells of rule.
Rahu in the 11th house is read as a strong appetite for gain through networks, and it is one of the placements that school treats kindly. That reading is built on the sidereal zodiac, which is offset from the one on this page by about 24 degrees. A Rahu house in a Vedic chart will not always match the node house here.
What the line asks for in practice
Strip the drama and this placement asks one honest question. Can you want something that is bigger than your own name on it?
The 5th house end is not a fault. Making things, playing, and being seen are real goods, and the reading does not ask you to give them up. It asks you to point them at a group.
A practical shape, if you want one. Join one thing you did not start. Finish a piece of work where somebody else takes the bow. Ask what the group needs before you offer what you like doing. Keep a friend who has nothing to do with your work.
None of that needs a past life to make sense. The same plain reading works on a north node in the 4th house, where the question turns toward home instead.

You need your birth date, your birth place, and your birth hour from a record. Count eleven signs on from your rising sign, taking the rising sign as one. If your north node sits in that eleventh sign, it is in the 11th house.

No. Across 32,669 charts with this placement we found none within 8 degrees, and the closest came to 30.4 degrees. A report that claims otherwise is not using whole sign houses.
Can I find my node house without a birth time?
No. Our count says a noon chart gets it right 8.9 per cent of the time, which is chance. You can still know your node sign, because that needs a date alone.
Where is my south node if my north node is in the 11th house?

That claim comes from the modern karmic school, which starts with Schulman in 1975. It is a reading, not a finding. The older Greek school says nothing of the kind.
