Two babies born the same afternoon can carry the north node in two different rooms of the chart. The date is shared. The clock is not.
So we drew 400,000 birth charts at random and counted what that clock is worth. We also tested one claim that no page ever checks. The 5th house belongs to the Sun. Does the Sun really turn up beside the node there? The count says no, and the number is on this page.
One line, two rooms: the crowd at one end, the workbench at the other
The nodes come in pairs. They sit straight across the chart, six signs apart.
A north node in the 5th house means a south node in the 11th house. There is no other option. If an app tells you something else, it is not using whole sign houses.
The 11th house is the room of groups. Friends, teams, causes and the wide network live there. The 5th house is the room where you make your own thing.
Read as one line, the pull is plain. One end is the crowd you already belong to. The other end is work with your name on it. The mirror page on a north node in the 11th house walks the same line from the far side.
What the 5th room actually holds
Picture your chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one slice of life. The planets are the furniture that got moved in.
The 5th room holds what you make and what you enjoy. Play sits here. So do art, sport, romance, children, and risk taken for fun. Greek writers called it the room of good fortune.
The north node is not furniture. It is not a planet, a star, or a rock. The Moon circles Earth on a tilted path. The Sun traces its own path across our sky, and sky readers call that path the ecliptic. The two paths cross at two points. The north node is one crossing. The south node is the other, straight across.

We use whole sign houses here. Each house is one whole sign, start to finish. Your rising sign fills the 1st house. The next sign fills the 2nd. No sign gets cut in half. The whole sign house system is the oldest one in use.
The Sun owns this room, so we went looking for it
The 5th house is the home of Leo, and Leo belongs to the Sun. Many pages lean on that link. A node in the Sun’s own room, they say, burns hotter than a node anywhere else.
That claim can be counted, so we counted it.
We kept every chart where the north node truly sits in the 5th house. Then we asked how many of those charts had the Sun within 8 degrees of the node. One count per chart, no double counting.
The answer is 4.8 per cent.
Now the part that matters. Take two points that have nothing to do with each other. Pure chance alone puts them within 8 degrees roughly 4.4 per cent of the time. We also ran the same count on three other rooms.

The 5th house sits at the top of that band by a hair. It is not a different world. The Sun calls at its own room about as often as it calls anywhere else.
We then ran the whole count again on births spread between 1900 and 2100, to be sure our date window was not shaping it. The 5th house figure did not budge. It came back at 4.8 per cent.
So the Leo story is a story. It reads well. It does not show up in the count. We report the five rows above as level rather than ranking them.
Your birth hour picks this house, and we priced the guess
Most free chart tools ask for a birth time. Leave it blank and they set the clock to noon and carry on. The chart still prints. It looks as sure as any other chart. Nothing on it flags the guess.
So we measured what that guess costs.
How we built the test
We drew 400,000 births at random between 1950 and 2010. Date and hour were both drawn. Birth spots were spread across the globe, with each band of latitude weighted by how many people live there.
For each birth we worked out the true node from the plane of the Moon orbit, then the rising degree, then the whole sign house. We ran every chart twice. Once with the real hour. Once with the clock forced to local noon.
Then we kept only the charts where the north node really sits in the 5th house, and asked where the noon chart had put it.
What the noon chart gets right
Noon landed on the 5th house 8.9 per cent of the time. Pure chance across twelve rooms is 8.3 per cent.
That is the whole story in one line. The noon chart carries almost no news about your node house.
The wrong answers did not pile up in one spot either. The 4th house took 9.0 per cent, which is a shade more than the right answer itself. The rest spread from 7.7 to 8.8 per cent. There is no near miss to lean on.

A rough hour costs you as well. Move the birth time by a quarter of an hour and the house changes in 12.3 per cent of charts. Move it by a full hour and it changes in 49.1 per cent. Half the charts.
The reason is plain. The rising degree crosses one whole sign in about two hours. An hour of doubt is half a room of doubt.
An hour off a birth record works. A family story about the afternoon does not. Your node sign needs a date alone, which is why a sign guide such as the north node in Aquarius asks for so much less than this page.
Ordinary, not rare
Pages love to call a placement rare. This one is not.
In our 400,000 charts the north node landed in the 5th house 8.4 per cent of the time. On the wider run between 1900 and 2100 it came to 8.3 per cent. Even odds across twelve rooms would give 8.33 per cent.
That match is the point. The north node has no favourite room. Which room it lands in follows the spread of rising signs, and that spread follows where people are born. Roughly one chart in twelve carries this placement.
Slow, and backward most of the time
The node drifts backward through the zodiac. The mean node, which is a smoothed average, creeps back 0.052954 degrees a day. It crosses one whole sign in 566.5 days and walks the full circle in 18.613 years.
Two nodes are in use, and they do not agree. The true node wobbles around the mean one. The gap between them runs 0.96 degrees on average and reaches 1.98 degrees at worst.
The true node also moves forward 25.9 per cent of the time. So the line you read everywhere, that the node is always backward, holds for the mean node only. A true node crossing takes anywhere from 541 to 633 days.
The north node has been in Aquarius since 27 July 2026 and leaves on 26 March 2028. That is the node in the sky, not the node in your chart. Your birth chart is a snapshot of one moment, and it never changes.
Three schools read this line three different ways
People argue about the nodes because three separate schools read them, and the schools disagree. Our guide to what the north node means sets them side by side.
The Greek reading: a valve, not a debt
Vettius Valens wrote in the second century. In that early Greek school the north node adds and the south node removes. Whatever sits near the north node grows. Whatever sits near the south node drains.
No past life appears anywhere in that reading.
The modern karmic reading: a soul with a task
The past life story is recent, and we can date it. Martin Schulman published his book on the nodes in 1975. Jan Spiller followed in 1997 with a bestseller. Those two books built the reading most blogs repeat today.
In that reading a south node in the 11th house shows a soul at ease in a crowd. Groups, causes, and shared plans came easy. The north node in the 5th house asks for the harder thing. Make something yourself. Put your name on it. Let it be seen.
It is a strong story. It is also fifty years old, not two thousand. Say so when you use it.
The Vedic reading: two shadow planets with full rank
Indian sky reading gives the nodes names and bodies. The north node is Rahu. The south node is Ketu. They are not junctions there. They are planets with full standing and long spells of rule.
Rahu in the 5th house is read as hunger for praise, for romance, and for the thrill of a bet. That reading is also built on the sidereal zodiac, which is offset from the one on this page by about 24 degrees. A Rahu house in a Vedic chart will not always match the node house here.
Reading the placement without the guilt
Strip the drama and this line asks one honest question. What would you make if nobody clapped?
The 11th house end is not a fault. Friends, teams and shared causes are real goods, and the reading does not ask you to drop them. It asks you to add one thing that is yours alone.
A practical shape, if you want one. Finish something small and put your name on it. Show it before it is perfect. Notice when you swap your own idea for the idea the group already likes. Keep one hobby that earns you nothing.
None of that needs a past life to make sense. The same honest reading works on a north node in the 2nd house, where the question is about what you can hold on your own.

How do I know if my north node is in the 5th house?
You need your birth date, your birth place, and your birth hour from a record. Count five signs on from your rising sign, starting with the rising sign as one. If your north node sits in that fifth sign, it is in the 5th house.
Can I find my node house without a birth time?
No. Our count says a noon chart gets it right 8.9 per cent of the time, which is chance. You can still know your node sign, because that needs a date alone.
Where is my south node if my north node is in the 5th house?
In the 11th house, always. The two points sit straight across the chart, and whole sign houses keep that exact.
Is a north node in the 5th house rare?
No. It showed up in 8.4 per cent of charts in our count, which is about one chart in twelve.
Does the Sun sit beside the node more in its own house?
No. We found 4.8 per cent in the 5th house, against 4.5 to 4.7 per cent in the other rooms we counted. The gap is too small to call a finding.
Why do two apps give me two different node houses?
Check three things. One app uses the true node while the other uses the mean node. One uses whole sign houses while the other splits signs. And one of them guessed your birth hour.
Does this placement mean I was ignored in a past life?
That claim comes from the modern karmic school, which starts with Schulman in 1975. It is a reading, not a finding. The older Greek school says nothing of the kind.
