Ask a modern app what the 11th house means and you get one word: friends. That answer is not wrong. It is just very small. The Greek-speaking astrologers who built Western astrology, from roughly 100 BC to 600 AD, gave this house a much larger name. They called it the House of Good Spirit. It was the place where luck lived. Friends were part of it, but only part.
This guide covers 11th house astrology from both ends: what the old texts say, what modern books say, and what the actual sky does. It also brings numbers. We ran sixty years of US births to see how often this house sits empty, and which planets crowd into it. The method is spelled out below, so you can check it.
One concrete case is Sun in the eleventh house, where the network becomes the whole question.
What does the 11th house rule in astrology?
The 11th house rules friends, groups, allies, hopes, and gains that arrive through other people. It covers the club, the crew, the union, the group chat, the cause you give money to. It also covers the reward that comes back from all of that.
Mars in the eleventh house shows what happens when a single planet takes the network as its subject.
Think of the birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life. The planets are the furniture. The 11th room is the one with the long table, where people you did not grow up with sit down together for a shared aim.
Moon in the 11th house narrows all of this to one planet and one story: feeling in the network.
Here is what each tradition puts in that room.
| Tradition | Name for the 11th | What it rules |
|---|---|---|
| Hellenistic (Greek, 100 BC to 600 AD) | Good Spirit (Agathos Daimon) | Luck, gifts, hope, allies, help from above |
| Medieval and Renaissance | House of Good Fortune, House of Friends | Friends, hopes, wishes, trust, gain |
| Indian (Vedic) | Labha Bhava, the place of gain | Income, profit, elder siblings, wishes met |
| Modern Western | House of Friendship and Community | Networks, groups, causes, the future you want |
Notice what happened across those four rows. Luck came first. Friends came later. The friends reading is the newest one, not the oldest.
The name the apps dropped: House of Good Spirit
Vettius Valens, a working astrologer from Antioch who wrote his Anthologies around 160 AD, lists the 11th house under the heading Good Spirit. In his text it brings gifts, friendship, hope, and help you did not earn. He treats it as one of the luckiest places in the chart.
Belonging carries a cost as well, and Black Moon Lilith in the eleventh house marks the circle a person will not enter to pay it.
Take Mercury in the eleventh house as a worked example of the house at full volume.
Claudius Ptolemy, writing his Tetrabiblos in Alexandria about twenty years earlier, is drier. He ranks the houses by their angle to the rising sign, and the 11th lands in the strong group. It sees the rising sign at a friendly angle, so its news is good news.
Of the placements that land here, Jupiter in the 11th house is the one that puts the appetite for more squarely into friends, allies and long-range hopes.
Fifteen centuries later the English astrologer William Lilly still keeps the old sense. In Christian Astrology, printed in London in 1647, he opens his chapter on the 11th house with the words “of Friends, Hope, Trust, Praise.” He then adds the part the apps forgot: this house shows what a king gives you, and what you gain from those above you.
Chris Brennan, whose 2017 book Hellenistic Astrology pulled these Greek sources back into English, makes the point plainly. The 11th was a house of good fortune long before it was a house of friendship. The friends came bundled with the luck, because in the ancient world your luck largely was your people.
Inside this house, Venus in the 11th house is one of the sharpest cases: affection meeting friends, allies and long-range hopes.
A planet’s joy, and why Jupiter has one here
Greek astrologers gave seven planets a favorite room. They called it the planet’s joy. A joy is not the same as rulership, and mixing them up is the most common error in this subject. Rulership means a planet owns a sign. A joy means a planet is at ease in a house, whatever sign that house holds.
| Planet | House of joy | Old name of that house |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 1st | Helm |
| Moon | 3rd | Goddess |
| Venus | 5th | Good Fortune |
| Mars | 6th | Bad Fortune |
| Sun | 9th | God |
| Saturn | 12th | Bad Spirit |
| Jupiter | 11th | Good Spirit |
Jupiter joys in the 11th. The planet Jupiter stands for growth, gifts, and the open hand. The Greeks put the greater benefic in the house of good spirit because the two ideas matched. Good luck and the biggest lucky planet belong in the same room.
Read the table sideways and a pattern jumps out. The two bad houses, the 6th and the 12th, hold the two hard planets. The good houses hold the kind ones. Venus joys in the 5th, the House of Good Fortune, and Jupiter joys in the 11th, the House of Good Spirit. Those two houses sit opposite each other. They are the twin lucky rooms of the chart: the 5th house of Good Fortune holds what your own body makes, while the 11th holds what other people bring you.
How to find your 11th house
Use whole sign houses, the system the Greeks used, where each room is exactly one sign. Find your rising sign, the sign coming up over the east at your birth. Then count ten signs forward. The sign you land on is your 11th house.
An example makes it quick. Rising sign Aries: count Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius. So an Aries rising has Aquarius on the 11th.
| Rising sign | Your 11th house sign |
|---|---|
| Aries | Aquarius |
| Taurus | Pisces |
| Gemini | Aries |
| Cancer | Taurus |
| Leo | Gemini |
| Virgo | Cancer |
| Libra | Leo |
| Scorpio | Virgo |
| Sagittarius | Libra |
| Capricorn | Scorpio |
| Aquarius | Sagittarius |
| Pisces | Capricorn |
You need your birth time for this. The rising sign shifts every two hours or so. An hour of error can move the whole set of rooms by one sign.
That clock matters even more for the lunar nodes, and our page on the north node in the 11th house puts a number on what a guessed hour costs.
Other house systems, such as Placidus, cut the rooms by unequal slices of time. In those systems the 11th house can straddle two signs, and the line where it starts is called the cusp. Whole sign keeps it simple, and it is what the oldest texts assume. For a wider map of all twelve rooms, see our guide to the houses in astrology.
Who rules the 11th house
In the old system, each house has a natural sign, and the 11th belongs to Aquarius. Aquarius was ruled by Saturn. That surprises people who expect a warm planet here. Saturn stands for rules, time, and structure. A group needs all three, or it is just a crowd. Saturn builds the meeting, the charter, the dues.
Uranus was found in 1781, and modern books gave it Aquarius. Uranus stands for the break, the shock, the new idea. So the 11th house now carries two readings at once: Saturn’s version, where the group holds a form, and the Uranus version, where the group breaks a form. Both are live in current practice.
Your own chart is more specific than any of this. Look at the sign on your 11th, then find the planet that rules that sign, then see where that planet sits. Astrologers call that planet the lord of the house. It tells you where your friends and your gains come from.
We counted sixty years of births: how often is the 11th house empty?
“Is my empty 11th house a problem?” is one of the most asked questions on this subject, and almost nobody answers it with a number. So we worked one out.
Here is the method, in plain terms. We counted every day of births in the US from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2009, weighted by where people live (303 towns and cities) and by the real hours babies are born, from CDC birth records for 2024. We built the chart in whole sign houses and placed ten bodies: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. Positions come from the astronomy-engine library, and a second, independent engine, the Swiss Ephemeris, gave the same figures, in the tropical zodiac. Then we counted.
| What is in the 11th house | Share of charts |
|---|---|
| Nothing at all (empty) | 44.9 % |
| Exactly one body | 32.1 % |
| Exactly two bodies | 15.1 % |
| Three or more | 7.9 % |
So an empty 11th house is the single most common case. Close to half of all people have one. It is not rare, and it is not a fault. It is the default.
That figure sits right where our other house counts sit. The 12th house comes out empty in 44.7 % of charts, the 9th in 46.8 %, the 2nd in 46.7 %. The 11th and the 12th are the two rooms most often furnished, because more US babies are born in the morning, when the Sun, Mercury and Venus sit in houses 10 to 12. With every hour counted the same, the 11th comes out empty in 47.4 % of charts. Across a whole chart, the average person has about five and a half of the 12 rooms empty. With ten bodies and twelve rooms, at least two rooms have to be empty, and the bodies bunch together, so close to half the rooms end up bare.
What an empty 11th means in practice is simple. No planet lives there, so the house is run from elsewhere, by the ruler of the sign on it. An Aries rising with an empty 11th in Aquarius reads the house through Saturn, wherever Saturn sits. The room is still furnished. The furniture is just borrowed from another room.
The 11th house stellium, and why Mercury is usually in it
A stellium is a pile-up: three or more bodies sitting in the same house or sign. People search for “11th house stellium” because they have one and want to know what it means. First, how rare is it?
| Size of the pile-up in the 11th | Share of charts |
|---|---|
| 3 or more bodies | 7.94 % |
| 4 or more bodies | 2.07 % |
| 5 or more bodies | 0.37 % |
So about 1 person in 13 has three or more bodies in the 11th. One in 50 has four or more. One in 270 has five or more. A five-body 11th house is a real find. A three-body one is common enough that you will meet several.
Now the part nobody tells you. We also looked at which bodies show up inside those piles. The result is lopsided.
| Body | Share of 11th house stelliums that include it |
|---|---|
| Mercury | 56.5 % |
| Sun | 54.1 % |
| Venus | 42.8 % |
| Mars | 33.3 % |
| Uranus | 28.5 % |
| Pluto | 27.5 % |
| Jupiter | 25.7 % |
| Saturn | 23.3 % |
| Moon | 21.3 % |
| Neptune | 18.4 % |
More than half of all 11th house stelliums contain Mercury. More than half contain the Sun. The Moon shows up in barely one in five. Yet on its own, the Moon lands in the 11th house in 8.3 percent of charts, not far below the Sun at 10.5 percent. So why the gap?
The answer is not astrology. It is orbits. Mercury and Venus circle inside Earth’s orbit, so from here they never stray far from the Sun. Mercury stays within 28 degrees of it. Venus stays within 47 degrees. Since a sign is 30 degrees wide, Mercury is nearly always in the Sun’s sign or the one next door. Venus is rarely more than two signs away. Those three travel as a pack. Where one goes, the others follow, and a pile-up forms.
The Moon does the opposite. It crosses a whole sign in about two and a half days and laps the zodiac every month. It wanders off alone, so it joins a pile far less.
We ran the same count on the 12th house and got the same shape: Mercury 55.7 %, Sun 55.1 %. The effect is not about the 11th house at all. It is the geometry of the solar system, showing up in every house alike. If your 11th house stellium contains Mercury and the Sun, you have the most ordinary kind of stellium there is. For more on how to read one, see our guide to a stellium in a natal chart.
That does not drain the meaning out of it. It sharpens it. A Sun and Mercury stellium in the 11th says your identity and your thinking both run through the group. A stellium built from Mars, Saturn, and Pluto in the 11th is far less common, and it reads very differently: hard work, friction, and power inside the collective.
How the House of Good Spirit became the house of friends
The shift happened in stages, and each stage was reasonable.
Lilly’s 1647 list already puts friends at the front. Luck is still there, but it has moved down the page. In the 1800s, English astrology narrowed further: a house of hopes and wishes, with friends as the means.
Then came the twentieth century and psychological astrology. Liz Greene, who holds a doctorate in psychology as well as a career in astrology, reads the chart as a map of the inner life rather than a forecast of events. In that frame, luck is a weak idea and belonging is a strong one. The 11th house becomes the place where you find your people.
Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols (1981), keeps the group meaning and ties it to shared goals. Demetra George, who spent decades bringing the Greek texts back, pushes the other way: her work restores the older reading, where the 11th is about the good that arrives from outside you.
Both readings are in use today. The friends reading is true and useful. It is simply not the whole inheritance. When your 11th house delivers a job through a friend of a friend, that is not the friendship talking. That is the House of Good Spirit doing what Valens said it does.
When your 11th house gets busy: dates you can check
A transit is a planet moving through the sky right now, crossing the rooms of your birth chart. When a planet enters your 11th house sign, that house wakes up. These are the exact dates, from the tropical zodiac.
Jupiter takes about a year per sign. It enters Leo on 30 June 2026, Virgo on 26 July 2027, Libra on 24 August 2028, Scorpio on 24 September 2029. Find your 11th house sign in the table above, then find its date. That is your Jupiter year in the house where Jupiter joys. The old texts would call it the best transit on this list.
Saturn is slower, at roughly two and a half years per sign. It enters Taurus on 13 April 2028, Gemini on 1 June 2030, Cancer on 14 July 2032, Leo on 27 August 2034. Saturn in the 11th prunes. Groups that were never real fall away, and the ones that stay get a proper structure.
Pluto is slower still. It entered Aquarius and stays there until 9 March 2043. Anyone with Aquarius on the 11th house has nearly two decades of deep change in their social world. That is the single longest 11th house transit now running.
These dates matter more than any general advice. An article that says “when Jupiter transits your 11th” tells you nothing you can act on. A date does. Compare it with your 10th house of career, which sits right next door, and the two together explain a whole chapter of a working life.
Reading your own 11th house in four steps
Work through these in order.
- Find the sign on your 11th house, using the table above. That sign is the tone of your social world.
- List any bodies sitting there. Each one shows a force at work among your friends and your gains.
- Find the ruler of that sign and note where it sits. That is where your allies come from, and it matters most when the house is empty.
- Check the dates above. See which slow planet is crossing that sign next, and when.
Those four answers beat any generic paragraph about friendship. They come from your chart, not from a template.
Frequently asked questions
What does the 11th house rule in astrology?
Friends, groups, allies, hopes, and gains that come through other people. The Greeks called it the House of Good Spirit and read it mainly as luck. Modern books read it mainly as community. Both meanings are in use.
How do I find my 11th house?
Under whole sign houses, count ten signs forward from your rising sign. You need an accurate birth time, because the rising sign changes every two hours.
Is an empty 11th house bad?
No. In our count of US births from 1950 to 2009, 44.9 % had an empty 11th house. It is the most common case. The house is then read through the ruler of the sign on it.
How rare is an 11th house stellium?
Three or more bodies in the 11th occurs in 7.94 % of charts, four or more in 2.07 %, five or more in 0.37 %. More than half of those stelliums include Mercury, because Mercury never travels more than 28 degrees from the Sun.
Which planet is happiest in the 11th house?
Jupiter. Greek astrologers said each of several planets has a favorite house, called its joy, and Jupiter’s joy is the 11th.
Who rules the 11th house?
Aquarius is its natural sign. Traditional astrology gives Aquarius to Saturn; modern astrology gives it to Uranus. In your own chart, what counts is the ruler of the sign actually sitting on your 11th.
How does the 11th house differ from the 7th?
The 7th house covers one person facing you: a spouse, a business partner, an open rival. The 11th covers many people standing beside you.
Do transits to the 11th house matter?
Yes, and they can be dated. Jupiter enters Leo on 30 June 2026 and Virgo on 26 July 2027. Pluto sits in Aquarius until 9 March 2043.
