Aries Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility starts with an odd rule of the sky. Venus in Aries and Venus in Scorpio are the two weakest seats Venus can hold. Old astrology calls both of them exile. And the two partners in this couple can never share a Sun sign. We checked every hour from 1600 to 2400, and not one hour allows it.
This guide explains both facts in plain words. It shows how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and what the old books say about the link between the two signs. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.
The pair at a glance
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in at your birth. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you in and how you show care. It is not your Sun sign, the one you read in a horoscope. This page is about two people, one with Venus in Aries and one with Venus in Scorpio.

Count from Aries to Scorpio and you get five signs, or 150 degrees. Modern astrologers call that angle a quincunx. It means two signs with nothing in common: not the same element, not the same mode, not the same pace.
Two exiles under one ruler
The old books rank each planet by the sign it stands in. The rank is called dignity. A planet in a sign it rules is at home. A planet in the sign facing its home is in exile, or detriment. Think of a guest in the house of a rival.
In the Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD, Ptolemy gives Venus two homes: Taurus and Libra. The sign facing Taurus is Scorpio. The sign facing Libra is Aries. So Venus has exactly two signs of exile, and this couple holds both of them.
There is a neat reason behind it. Aries and Scorpio are the two homes of Mars. Venus and Mars own opposite signs, like two ends of a seesaw. Wherever Venus is at home, Mars is in exile, and the reverse. So each partner here has a Venus living in the house of Mars.
How rare is that double exile? Among all 78 pairs of Venus signs, six have both Venuses in a weak seat, counting Virgo, where Venus is in fall. Only one of the six joins two different signs of exile. It is this one.
William Lilly, writing Christian Astrology in 1647, read a planet in detriment as one that works harder for less. In plain words, this Venus has to fight for what comes easily elsewhere. Signs that turn away from each other
Ptolemy lists several ways two signs can be linked. Book I, chapter 13, covers the aspects, the fixed angles such as the trine and the square. The quincunx is not on his list. For him, signs five apart form no aspect at all.
Chapter 16 gives these signs a name. He calls them disjunct, which means cut off. The English word used in some books is aversion. Two signs one apart or five apart cannot see each other.
Ptolemy offers two other links that could save a disjunct pair. Signs that command and obey sit on each side of the spring point. Signs that behold each other give days of the same length. Aries and Scorpio share neither link.
Scholars read those two rules in two ways. The first reading uses whole signs. The second uses exact degrees, as Lilly did with mirror points. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, discusses both in his notes 80 and 83. On the whole-sign reading, Aries stands outside the command scheme, and the sign that beholds Aries is Virgo, not Scorpio. On the degree reading, we counted couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror degrees. For this pair the count is zero. Both readings agree: no link.
So this is one of 16 pairs out of 78 that are fully cut off. No aspect, no command, no shared day. The only thread between the two signs is Mars.
Is the quincunx exact in degrees?
A sign is 30 degrees wide. Two Venuses five signs apart can be anywhere from 120 to 180 degrees apart. The angle is exact at 150 degrees. The allowed gap around it is called the orb.
We measured this with the real spread of Venus inside each sign, over eight centuries.

These figures are nearly the same for every Venus pair, so they are not special to this couple. What matters is the other side. With an 8 degree orb, 7.1 percent of these couples form a real trine or opposition in degrees instead. Say Venus sits at 28 degrees of Aries and at 1 degree of Scorpio. The gap is 123 degrees, close to a trine. For those couples, the pair Ptolemy called cut off is linked in the sky. Check both degrees before you read the pair as a void.
How common is this couple?
Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it turns backward for some six weeks. That phase is called a retrograde, and it makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others.
Over 1600 to 2400, the spread is small. Every sign gets between 8.04 and 8.62 percent of the time. Venus in Aries holds 8.29 percent and Venus in Scorpio holds 8.11 percent.
Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Aries and the other Venus in Scorpio? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.34 percent, or one couple in 74. That ranks 57th of the 78 pairs. Among the twelve quincunx pairs, it is the rarest.
Short windows tell a different story. Our Venus in Scorpio guide shows it with an hourly count. For people born from 1950 to 2010, Aries came first at 10.29 percent and Scorpio second at 9.82 percent. In that span, Venus kept turning backward in these two signs, 23 times out of 63 from 1950 to 2050. Doubling the product of those two shares gives about 2.0 percent, or one couple in 50. No other pair of Venus signs was that common in those sixty years. So a couple born in that era is far more likely to be this pair than the long view says.
Two Suns that never match
Here is the part most guides skip. Seen from Earth, Venus stays close to the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

The two lists never touch. The Aries side runs from Aquarius to Gemini. The Scorpio side runs from Virgo to Capricorn. Not one Sun sign appears in both. So these two partners always have different Sun signs.
The likeliest combination is a Taurus Sun with a Libra Sun, at 8.9 percent of these couples. Both of those Suns are ruled by Venus. So the likeliest couple here has two Venus-ruled Suns, each with Venus in exile. Next come Taurus with Sagittarius, at 8.5 percent, and Pisces with Libra, also 8.5 percent.
How are the two Suns placed? In 37 percent of these couples, the Suns form a quincunx too, just like the Venuses. In 24 percent they form a trine, and in 19 percent an opposition. So the Sun pair and the Venus pair tell different stories for most couples. Read both.
A Sun-sign Aries and Scorpio is not this couple
Many readers land here because they are an Aries and a Scorpio by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.
An Aries Sun has Venus in Aries 23.6 percent of the time. A Scorpio Sun has Venus in Scorpio 23.5 percent of the time. Both must hold at once, which happens in about 5.5 percent of Aries and Scorpio Sun couples. That is about one in 18. Most Aries Suns carry Venus in Pisces or Taurus instead.
Look at the whole couple. In 41.5 percent of Venus Aries and Venus Scorpio couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That leaves 58.5 percent where neither does. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If your birth time is unknown and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.
Reading the pair the old way
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the match, and how modern writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo describe Venus in these signs.
Venus in Aries loves at speed. The chase lights it up. It says what it wants, and it wants it now. Venus in Scorpio loves in depth. It tests trust slowly and holds on hard once trust is won. Both borrow from Mars, but from two faces of Mars. Aries takes the charge. Scorpio takes the siege.
- Shared heat. Both Venuses are intense, and neither is lukewarm about love.
- Different clocks. Aries wants a fast yes. Scorpio wants proof over time.
- Open and closed. Aries shows every feeling at once. Scorpio keeps its cards close.
- Jealousy and freedom. Scorpio guards what it loves. Aries resists being guarded.
- After a fight. Aries forgets by the next morning. Scorpio remembers the details.
Modern writers read the quincunx as a gap that needs steady tuning from both sides. Here, that means Aries learns to stay after the spark, and Scorpio learns to say what it feels before it is sure.
What the evidence says
The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. In a 2007 paper called Ten Million Marriages, he used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from data errors.
Voas tested Sun signs only. No one has run a test like that for Venus signs, as far as we know. A census gives dates, and a Venus sign needs a date and, near a sign edge, a time. So read this page as a set of words for how two people love. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly, span by span. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure on this page.
