Aries Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility looks simple on paper. Venus in Aries and Venus in Sagittarius share the fire element, and astrologers read that link as easy. But the Sun signs behind this couple tell a stranger story. Only one Sun sign can hold either Venus, and it is Aquarius, an air sign. We checked every hour from 1600 to 2400 to find out how rare that is.
This guide shows how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and how the old books rank Venus in these two signs. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.
What this pair is, in plain terms
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in at your birth. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you in, what you value and how you show care. It is not your Sun sign, the one you read in a horoscope. This page is about two people, one with Venus in Aries and one with Venus in Sagittarius.
Aries is the first sign and Sagittarius the ninth. Count from one to the other and you get four signs, or 120 degrees. That angle is a trine, the smoothest link in the old scheme. Both are fire signs, a group of three that also holds Leo. In the tradition, fire is the element of drive, warmth and hope.
The two signs differ in mode. Aries is cardinal, which means it opens a season, here spring. Sagittarius is mutable, which means it closes one, here autumn. One starts things. The other stretches them and moves on. Among all 78 Venus pairs, no other one joins those two modes inside the fire element.
What the evidence says first
A fair warning comes before any chart talk. The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. In a 2007 paper called Ten Million Marriages, he used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from data errors.
Voas tested Sun signs only. No one has run a test like that for Venus signs, as far as we know. So read what follows as words two people can use for how they love. It cannot tell them whether they will last.
How common each Venus is
Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it turns backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. That loop makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others.
Venus repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so a short window can skew the count. To smooth out those loops, we used eight full centuries.

The spread is small. Neither Venus here is rare, and both sit close to one in twelve. A short window looks very different, as our guide to Venus in Sagittarius shows. For births from 1950 to 2010, Sagittarius came last of the twelve.
Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Aries and the other Venus in Sagittarius? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.36 percent, or one couple in 73. That ranks 48th of the 78 pairs.
One Sun sign fits both, and it is not a fire sign
Seen from Earth, Venus stays close to the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

Read the table row by row. The two lists touch in one place only: Aquarius. An Aquarius Sun can have Venus in Aries, at the far edge of its range. It can also have Venus in Sagittarius, at the other edge. No other Sun sign can hold both.
So the two partners share a Sun sign only if both are Aquarius. Multiply the two Aquarius shares and you get 0.84 percent, about one couple in 119. In the other 118, the two Suns differ. A fire trine by Venus, then, almost never comes with a matching Sun.
What do the Suns look like instead? The likeliest combination is a Taurus Sun with a Scorpio Sun, at 8.7 percent of these couples. Those two signs face each other across the wheel. Next come Taurus with Capricorn, at 8.6 percent, and Pisces with Scorpio, at 8.3 percent.
We sorted every couple by the angle between their two Suns.

Only one couple in four has Suns in a trine too. For the rest, the easy Venus link sits on top of a different Sun story. The two readings are worth doing side by side.
An Aries and Sagittarius by Sun sign is not this couple
Many readers land here because they are an Aries and a Sagittarius by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.
An Aries Sun has Venus in Aries 23.6 percent of the time. A Sagittarius Sun has Venus in Sagittarius 23.5 percent of the time. Both must hold at once, which happens in about 5.5 percent of Aries and Sagittarius Sun couples, or one in 18.
Seen from the Venus side, 41.6 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. In the other 58.4 percent, neither partner does. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If your birth time is unknown and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.
Venus in Aries: a guest in a rival’s house
The old books rank each planet by the sign it stands in. The rank is called dignity. In the Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD, Ptolemy gives Venus two homes: Taurus and Libra. The sign facing a home is called exile, or detriment. Libra faces Aries, so Venus in Aries is in exile.
Aries belongs to Mars. Venus and Mars own opposite signs, like two ends of a seesaw. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), read a planet in detriment as one that works harder for less. Modern writers such as Liz Greene read Venus in Aries as love that leads. It moves first, says what it wants and enjoys the chase.
Venus in Sagittarius: no major rank, and no harm
Sagittarius belongs to Jupiter. Venus does not rule it, is not exalted there and does not fall there. She holds no major rank in this sign. Lilly’s word for a planet with no rank is peregrine, from the Latin for a traveler. It means a guest who takes the tone of the host.
The host here is Jupiter, the planet of growth, faith and open roads. So this Venus loves through ideas, travel and shared plans. Stephen Arroyo and other modern writers read it as a need for room and honesty in love.
So the trine joins one Venus in a hostile house with one Venus in a friendly but foreign one. Neither is at home. That is worth knowing before calling the pair effortless.
What Ptolemy says about the trine
In Book I, chapter 13, Ptolemy names the aspects. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious, because they join signs of the same kind. The square and the opposition he calls clashing. By his scheme, the Aries and Sagittarius trine joins two fire signs of the same gender, both masculine.
Ptolemy adds other links in chapters 14 and 15: signs that command and obey, and signs that behold each other through equal days. Aries and Sagittarius share neither. Their bond rests on the trine alone.
Is the trine exact in degrees?
Two Venuses four signs apart can be anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. The trine is exact at 120 degrees. The allowed gap around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign, over eight centuries.

These values are close to the same for every Venus pair, so they are not special to this one. The twist is at the edge. With an 8 degree orb, 3.5 percent of these couples form a square in degrees instead. Say Venus sits at 28 degrees of Aries and at 2 degrees of Sagittarius. The gap is 94 degrees. By sign it is a trine. In the sky it is a square.
Reading the pair the old way
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this match.
- Shared fire. Both love with energy, humor and a taste for the new.
- Start and stretch. Aries begins the plan. Sagittarius widens it into a trip or a cause.
- Blunt words. Both say what they think. Neither likes hints or hidden moods.
- Freedom. Sagittarius wants room to roam. Aries wants the next win. Both can forget to stay put.
- Care in quiet times. Neither Venus sits at home in slow comfort, so both need to plan for it.
Take this reading as an invitation to talk about pace and freedom. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library, and added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.
Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs multiply each partner’s Sun-sign shares. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
