Venus is the planet of love, pleasure and what we value. Pluto is the slow, far planet of depth, power and change that cannot be undone. When the two meet at a right angle, astrologers call it Venus square Pluto. It is one of the most searched love aspects in astrology, and one of the most misread.
This guide starts with the birth chart, because that is where most people meet it. Then it looks at the sky. In autumn 2026, Venus squares Pluto three times in a row. That has happened only six times between 1950 and 2049. We did the math, and we show how.
What Venus square Pluto means in a natal chart
An aspect is an angle between two planets, measured along the zodiac circle. A conjunction is 0°: the two planets sit side by side. A square is 90°: a quarter of the circle apart, like the two hands of a clock at three o’clock. Pluto square Venus is the same aspect, named the other way round.
Your natal chart, or birth chart, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. Think of it as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life, and the planets are the furniture. A square is two pieces of furniture that block each other’s door. You keep walking into the corner.
In the second century, Ptolemy sorted the angles in his Tetrabiblos (book I, chapter 13). He called the trine and the sextile harmonious. He called the square and the opposition discordant. That split still shapes how astrologers read a square today. A square is friction. Friction is also what makes a wheel move.
The two planets in plain words

Put them at a square, and the light, easy side of love meets the deep, heavy side. Neither one can ignore the other.
How the tradition reads the square
Pluto was found in 1930. So Ptolemy and the old authors never wrote about it. The readings below come from the twentieth century.
In 1940, the German astrologer Reinhold Ebertin published The Combination of Stellar Influences. He listed each pair of planets and gave it a short meaning. For Venus with Pluto, his theme is a strong pull toward intense attraction. He saw the same pair behind a gift for art that moves people.
Sue Tompkins, in Aspects in Astrology (2002), treats Venus and Pluto together as a search for depth in love. In her reading, the square version wants a bond that changes both people. Surface charm is not enough. Stephen Arroyo, for his part, reads outer planets like Pluto as forces that push the inner planets to grow. He does not read them as fate.
So what does this look like in a life? Here is how the tradition puts it:
- Love is felt at full volume. Small crushes feel large.
- Trust takes time. The person wants to know what is real before they relax.
- Jealousy and control are the classic shadow. The tradition names them. It does not say they are a sure thing.
- Money and power can mix with love. Who pays, and who holds the keys, becomes a real question.
- The gift is depth. People with this square are said to stay when things get hard.
A word of care here. Online, this aspect gets called toxic or obsessive. That label is unfair. No aspect makes anyone cruel or makes a bond unsafe. A chart describes themes, not behavior. If a relationship feels unsafe, that is a matter for real people and real help, not a planet.
How common is Venus square Pluto?
People ask if this aspect is rare. So we counted. We drew 200,000 random moments between 1950 and 2010. For each one, we took the positions of Venus and Pluto from the Swiss Ephemeris. That is the standard table of planet positions used by astrology software. We used the tropical zodiac, which starts each year at the spring equinox.
The orb is the gap we allow around the exact angle. A square with an 8° orb counts anything from 82° to 98° apart. With a 3° orb, it counts 87° to 93°. We counted both squares: the one where Venus is ahead of Pluto, and the one where it trails.

So roughly one person in eleven has Venus square Pluto with a wide orb. About one in thirty has a tight one. It is not rare, but it is not common either.
We checked the figure a second way. We stepped through time every six hours, from 1950 to 2010, with no random draws. That gave 8.91 percent. We ran the same sweep from 1600 to 2400, one step a day. It gave 8.92 percent. The long window and the short one agree.
The share moves a little by decade. It ran from 8.1 percent for births in the 1960s to 9.8 percent in the 1990s. The reason is the way Venus speeds up and slows down against a Pluto that barely moves.
One limit: our moments are spread evenly in time. They are not weighted by real birth records. So read the figures as the share of time, not the share of people alive today.
Why an 8° orb and a 3° orb?
Astrologers do not agree on one orb. In 1647, William Lilly wrote in Christian Astrology that each planet has its own orb, its own zone of reach. Modern authors use tables of their own. How to find it in your own chart
Venus and Pluto move slowly enough that your birth date is almost always enough. You do not need a birth time to see this square. You do need one for the Moon and for the houses, the twelve rooms of the chart. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so a few hours change its place.
Here is a simple way to check:
- Find the sign and degree of Venus in your chart.
- Find the sign and degree of Pluto.
- Count the gap in degrees. Each sign is 30°.
- If the gap is between 82° and 98°, you have the square with an 8° orb.
Most squares link signs three apart. Venus in Taurus squares Pluto in Aquarius or Leo. Some squares cross a sign line, though. Venus at 29° Aries and Pluto at 1° Aquarius are 88° apart. That still counts. Astrologers call it an out-of-sign square.

The houses add the setting. With a square from the fifth house, the house of joy and romance, the story plays out in dating. With one from the tenth house, the house of career, it plays out at work. That is why two people with the same square can live it very differently.
Venus square Pluto transit: when the sky repeats it
A transit is what the planets are doing in the sky right now, compared with your chart. When Venus squares Pluto in the sky, everyone feels the mood a little. People with Venus or Pluto near those degrees feel it most.
Most years, Venus squares Pluto about twice. Venus moves about one degree a day. So each pass is quick. Within an 8° orb, each pass lasts about 13 to 16 days.
Venus square Pluto 2026: three exact hits
Autumn 2026 is different. Venus goes retrograde. That means it seems to move backward in the sky, as seen from Earth. It is an effect of our point of view, like a slower car that seems to slide back as you pass it on the highway.
Venus turns retrograde on October 3, 2026, at 8°29′ Scorpio. It turns direct on November 14 (UTC) at 22°52′ Libra. On the U.S. East Coast, that direct turn falls on the evening of November 13. Pluto sits at about 3° Aquarius the whole time. So Venus crosses the square degree three times: going forward, going back, and going forward again.

There is one more twist. Pluto itself turns direct on October 16, 2026 (UTC) at 3°04′ Aquarius. In New York, that is the night of October 15. A planet at a station, the moment it seems to stand still before turning, is said to speak loudest. Four days later, Venus squares Pluto on that very degree.
We measured how long the square stays in orb. Venus stays within 8° of the exact square from September 3 or 4 to November 3. It leaves for a few weeks, then returns from November 25 or 26 to December 19. That adds up to about 84 days, against the usual two weeks. Within 1°, there are three short windows of about three days each: September 14 to 17, October 18 to 21, and December 8 to 11.
How rare is this triple pass? We searched the century from 1950 to 2049. We found 199 separate square episodes. Only six were triple passes: 1954-55, 1972, 1981-82, 2009, 2026 and 2044. So the last one was in 2009, and the next one comes in 2044.

The November 8, 2025 square falls on the evening of November 7 in New York. All dates were found with the Swiss Ephemeris, then checked with a second program, Astronomy Engine. The two agree to within a quarter of an hour.
What the transit is said to bring
According to the tradition, a Venus square Pluto transit brings love and money topics to the surface. Old feelings come back. A question of trust or power in a bond gets hard to avoid. A strong attraction appears out of nowhere.
In 2026, the triple pass works like a story in three acts. In mid-September, a theme shows up. Around October 20, it is looked at again, more slowly. In early December, a choice gets made. That is the reading astrologers give to any planet that goes back over the same degree.
