Libra Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility joins Venus in two of her best seats. In Libra, Venus is at home. In Pisces, she is exalted, which means honored as a guest. Yet the two signs form no classic aspect. Ptolemy would call them turned away from each other, unless you read him degree by degree.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs that sit behind each Venus, and both readings of Ptolemy. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Venus at home, and Venus exalted
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. Detriment and fall are its two weak places.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Ruler of the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Venus | Home, or domicile. | Venus herself. |
| Pisces Venus | Exaltation, a place of honor. | Jupiter, in the old scheme. |
Ptolemy explains both ranks in Book I of the Tetrabiblos, written in the second century. In chapter 17 he hands out the homes. Venus gets Libra and Taurus, two signs he calls “extremely fertile.” Jupiter gets Sagittarius and Pisces, which he calls “windy and fecund.”
Chapter 19 gives the exaltations. Venus is moist by nature, he wrote, so she “increases her own proper power all the more in Pisces, where the beginning of the moist spring is indicated.” So a Pisces Venus is a guest in Jupiter’s house, but a guest of honor.
Only three Venus pairs with two different signs place both Venuses in a sign of strength. They are Taurus and Libra, Taurus and Pisces, and this pair. It is the only one of the three that links the house of Venus in autumn to her exaltation at the end of winter.
A Libra Venus loves through balance, beauty and fair terms. Our page on Venus in Libra covers that placement in full. A Pisces Venus loves through devotion, care and a wish to merge. Our page on Venus in Pisces shows how few charts reach the peak degree of that exaltation. A strong rank is a label from old books. It does not make anyone a better partner.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Libra | 8.32 percent | Sixth of twelve. |
| Venus in Pisces | 8.32 percent | Seventh of twelve, a hair behind. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Libra and the other Venus in Pisces? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.38 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 35th of the 78 Venus pairs, near the middle.
Five signs apart: no aspect by sign
An aspect is an angle between two points in a chart. Libra and Pisces sit five signs apart, an angle of 150 degrees. Modern astrologers call it a quincunx, or inconjunct. It links signs that share nothing: Libra is air and Pisces is water, and Libra opens a season while Pisces closes one.
Ptolemy did not count the quincunx. In chapter 13 he names only four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. In chapter 16 he goes further. Signs five apart, he wrote, “divide the whole circle into unequal parts.” He calls such signs “disjunct” and “alien.” But he adds a condition. Signs are disjunct only if they share none of the ties from chapters 14 and 15. So the real question is whether Libra and Pisces have one of those ties.
Mirrored by degree: two readings of chapter 15
Chapter 14 names signs that “command” and “obey.” Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists them in his note 80. Pisces obeys Taurus. As for Libra, Robbins notes that “Aries and Libra are left out of the scheme,” since the count starts from them. No tie there.
Chapter 15 names signs that “behold” each other, or have “equal power.” Ptolemy defines them as parts “equally removed from the same tropical sign.” A tropical sign here means a solstice sign, Cancer or Capricorn. When the Sun is in either part, “the days are equal to the days.” Here his text can be read in two ways.
The first reading uses whole signs. Robbins lists the pairs in his note 83: Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, and Aquarius and Sagittarius. Libra pairs with Aries. Pisces pairs with Scorpio. On that reading, Libra and Pisces have no tie at all. They are disjunct and alien, and they turn their backs.
The second reading uses exact degrees. Each degree is mirrored across the solstice axis, the line from 0 degrees Cancer to 0 degrees Capricorn. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), called such mirror points antiscia. On this reading, 10 degrees Libra mirrors 20 degrees Pisces. Both sit 80 degrees from the winter solstice, one before it and one after. When the Sun is at either point, the day has the same length. So every Libra degree has a twin in Pisces, and the two signs behold each other.
We counted the couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points.
| Margin around the mirror point | Share of couples | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 1 degree | 6.56 percent | About one couple in 15. |
| 3 degrees | 19.00 percent | About one couple in five. |
So the answer depends on the reading. By whole signs, the two Venuses are strangers. By degrees, about one couple in five shares a close mirror bond, and it runs through the winter solstice. Six Venus pairs mirror this way. Three sit around the summer solstice: Gemini and Cancer, Taurus and Leo, Aries and Virgo. Three sit around the winter one: Sagittarius and Capricorn, Scorpio and Aquarius, and this pair. Each lands on the same one couple in 15.
Real aspects across the sign line
A sign spans 30 degrees, so a pair five signs apart is not always 150 degrees apart. A Venus at 1 degree Libra and a Venus at 29 degrees Pisces are 178 degrees apart, almost a true opposition. A Venus at 29 degrees Libra and one at 1 degree Pisces are 122 degrees apart, almost a trine. Astrologers call these out-of-sign aspects. We counted them for a margin, or orb, of each size.
| Orb | Share with an out-of-sign opposition or trine | Share with a close quincunx. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 1.00 percent | 19.00 percent. |
| 6 degrees | 4.01 percent | 35.99 percent. |
| 8 degrees | 7.14 percent | 46.20 percent. |
| 10 degrees | 11.15 percent | 55.52 percent. |
At an 8-degree orb, about one couple in 14 forms a real Ptolemaic aspect across the sign line, split about evenly between the opposition and the trine. The close quincunx shares are almost the same for every Venus pair, since they come from the geometry of two 30-degree signs.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.
| Sun sign | Share of Libra Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | 8.99 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Virgo | 30.08 percent | The largest group. |
| Libra | 23.52 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Scorpio | 28.37 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Sagittarius | 9.05 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Pisces Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Capricorn | 9.42 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Aquarius | 28.57 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Pisces | 23.28 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Aries | 29.56 percent | The largest group. |
| Taurus | 9.18 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
The two lists have no Sun sign in common, so these partners never share a Sun sign. Our pivot page on Venus sign compatibility explains why Venus keeps each person inside this five-sign window.
The likeliest couple is a Virgo Sun with an Aries Sun. It covers 8.89 percent of these couples, about one in eleven. That is a trend, not a rule. Virgo with Aquarius comes next at 8.59 percent, then Aries with Scorpio at 8.39 percent. A true Libra Sun with a Pisces Sun is 5.48 percent, about one couple in 18.
We sorted all couples by the angle between their two Sun signs.
| Angle between the two Sun signs | Share of couples | Example. |
|---|---|---|
| Quincunx, five signs apart | 37.28 percent | Virgo Sun with Aries Sun. |
| Trine, four signs apart | 24.25 percent | Scorpio Sun with Pisces Sun. |
| Opposition, six signs apart | 19.13 percent | Virgo Sun with Pisces Sun. |
| Square, three signs apart | 13.25 percent | Scorpio Sun with Aquarius Sun. |
| Sextile, two signs apart | 5.26 percent | Scorpio Sun with Capricorn Sun. |
| Semi-sextile, one sign apart | 0.85 percent | Sagittarius Sun with Capricorn Sun. |
So the Sun signs repeat the Venus angle in a bit more than one couple in three. Our page on Pisces and Libra compatibility looks at the Sun-sign version of this pair, where Venus is again the link.
A Libra Venus and a Pisces Venus in daily life
Astrologers read Venus at full strength in both charts. That makes this a gentle pair on paper. Both partners value kindness. Both dislike harsh words. Both want love to feel lovely.
The styles differ, though. Libra is air, the element of ideas and talk. A Libra Venus wants love to be fair, graceful and clear. Pisces is water, the element of feeling. A Pisces Venus wants love to be deep, tender and without walls. Libra draws a neat line. Pisces rubs the line out.
| Theme | Libra Venus | Pisces Venus. |
|---|---|---|
| Feels loved when | Treated as an equal, with care and good manners. | Understood without having to explain. |
| Shows love by | Beauty, charm and keeping the peace. | Devotion, comfort and small sacrifices. |
| Needs to hear | That things are fair between you. | That you feel it too. |
| Can misread the other as | Vague or too much. | Cool or too polite. |
Where the friction sits, and how couples use it
The shared risk is silence. Libra avoids conflict to keep the peace. Pisces avoids it to spare feelings. So a small hurt can go unsaid for a long time. The quincunx is the classic picture of this: two signs that do not see the problem from the same angle.
Some couples in this pair find these questions useful.
- What is one thing I have not said because I did not want a scene?
- When I say “fine,” what do I really mean?
- Which choices do we make together, and which alone?
- How do we each like to make up after a hard talk?
- Where do I give too much, and where do I hold back?
These are good questions for any couple. The Venus signs just give you a shared language to start the talk.
What the evidence says
No study has found that sign pairs predict love. The largest test we know of is by the sociologist David Voas. In 2007 he looked at 10.3 million married couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. Venus signs have never been tested at that scale. So read this page as a lens and a talking point, never as a verdict on your bond.
How we measured
We found each entry of Venus and the Sun into every sign from 1600 to 2400, to within a second, with the astronomy-engine code library. Then we added up the time Venus spent in each sign, and in each sign with each Sun sign. A second route, the Swiss Ephemeris, sampled every hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes. The two routes agree to within 0.01 point. The mirror and orb shares come from the true spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of 0.1 degree.
Your Moon sign adds your emotional needs to the picture. See Libra Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility for that layer. The two other pairs with both Venuses strong are Taurus Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility and Taurus Venus and Libra Venus compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Are Libra Venus and Pisces Venus compatible?
By tradition both Venuses are strong: at home in Libra, exalted in Pisces. The signs form no classic aspect, and air meets water. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do, so treat this as a lens, not a verdict.
How rare is a Libra Venus and Pisces Venus couple?
About one couple in 72, or 1.38 percent, measured from 1600 to 2400. It ranks 35th of the 78 Venus pairs, near the middle.
Do Libra and Pisces behold each other in Ptolemy?
It depends on the reading. By whole signs, as in Robbins’s note 83, Libra pairs with Aries and Pisces with Scorpio, so the two are disjunct. By exact degrees, each Libra degree mirrors a Pisces degree across the solstice axis. About one couple in five has Venuses within 3 degrees of such a mirror point.
Can a Libra Venus and a Pisces Venus have the same Sun sign?
No. A Libra Venus goes with a Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius Sun. A Pisces Venus goes with a Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries or Taurus Sun. The likeliest couple is a Virgo Sun with an Aries Sun.
What is a quincunx?
It is an angle of 150 degrees, or five signs. Modern astrologers use it as a minor aspect that links signs with nothing in common. Ptolemy did not count it as an aspect at all.
