Two astrology sites can read the same birth data and give you two different Black Moon Lilith signs. Neither site is broken. They use two different methods. Those methods land in different signs on 36.3 percent of days. I measured it.

Black Moon Lilith is a spot in the sky with nothing in it
Start with the fact that almost no page states plainly. Black Moon Lilith is not an object. It is not a planet, a moon, or a rock.
The Moon does not circle Earth in a neat ring. It runs a squashed loop. At one end of that loop the Moon comes close to us. At the other end it swings far out. Astronomers call that far end the apogee, which simply means the far point of an orbit. Black Moon Lilith is the direction of that far point, marked on the zodiac band.
Point a telescope at it and you see empty sky. There is nothing there to photograph.
A birth chart works like a house with twelve rooms. Each room is one part of life. The planets are the furniture. The signs are the paint on the walls. Lilith is not furniture. It is a mark drawn on the floor.
That mark does move. The whole squashed loop of the Moon slowly swings round, like a hand sweeping a clock face. One full sweep takes 8.85 years.
The sentence most pages skip: there are two Liliths
Here is the root of every argument you have seen about a Lilith position. Two methods exist for working out where that far point sits. Both are honest. They disagree.
The first is the mean Lilith. It smooths the wobble of the Moon into one steady sweep. It moves the same amount every day. It never stops and never goes backward.
The second is the true Lilith, also called the osculating Lilith. Osculating means touching. The idea is a neat one. At each second, you take the exact oval the Moon is riding right then, as if nothing else pulled on it. Then you read the far end of that one oval. Because the Sun keeps tugging the Moon about, this figure jumps around. It races ahead, it stalls, it reverses.
I ran both, one reading per day, from 1 January 1950 to 1 January 2041. That is 33,239 readings for each method. Here is what came out.

Read the third row again. On more than one day in three, the two methods do not agree on the sign. The largest gap, 30.26 degrees, is a whole sign wide.
So the answer to the question is plain. Your Lilith sign depends on the calculator. Nobody is lying to you. The sites just do not say which method they used.
How far apart the two Liliths get, day by day
An average hides the shape of a thing. Here is the full spread across the same 33,239 days.

Just under a third of days are close. On the rest, the gap is wide enough to matter. On one day in twenty the two points sit almost a full sign apart.

Today the two agree on the sign. That is luck, and it will not last. The mean Lilith crossed into Capricorn on 15 September 2026 at 15:47 universal time, by the formula used here. Some software dates that crossing one day earlier. The two figures differ by a fraction of a degree, and the point moves so slowly that a fraction of a degree is worth about a day.

The gap from one line to the next is the same every time. That is the check that the table is sound.
Why no such table exists for the true Lilith
I built one. It was useless, and the reason is worth showing you.
Across the ten years from 2020 to 2030, the true Lilith entered and left Virgo nineteen separate times. Some of those visits ran a few days. Some ran three weeks. The mean Lilith, over the same stretch, made one clean pass of 269 days.
The cause is simple. The true Lilith runs backward on 56.1 percent of days, measured across the full 1950 to 2040 span. It spends more time going backward than forward. A point that reverses more than half the time cannot produce a tidy list of dates.
That is the practical reason most astrologers work with the mean figure. They know the true figure sits closer to the real sky at any one second. They use the mean one anyway, because it can be written down.
Three different things carry the name Lilith
This is where a lot of confusion starts. One word is doing three jobs.

These three sit in different places and move at different speeds. A page that says Lilith without saying which one is not much use. Everything on this page concerns the first row.
One correction is worth making here. The asteroid is routinely described as named after the Lilith of legend. The naming citation points to Lili Boulanger, a composer who died in 1918. The myth is old. The chart reading is not.
The figure of Lilith is ancient. The best known version comes from the Alphabet of Ben Sira, a rabbinic text of the eighth to tenth century. In that story Lilith is the first wife of Adam. She refuses to lie beneath him, says so out loud, and leaves. Older Mesopotamian sources name similar night figures, and the lines between them are blurred.
Here is the honest part. That story has no ancient link to the far point of the lunar orbit. The link is modern. Someone in the twentieth century attached an old name to a newly popular calculation. The attachment is a choice, not an inheritance.
The reading itself is about fifty years old. The far point of the lunar orbit has been calculable since the 1700s. Almost nobody read it as a chart point before the 1970s. The books that built the modern reading came out in the 1970s and 1980s. Demetra George wrote on the dark side of the Moon and framed Lilith as a part of a person that was pushed out of sight. Delphine Jay wrote one of the first full guides to the point, and put the same case in flatter words.
Saying this out loud is a strength. A fifty year old reading has named authors, dated books, and arguments you can follow and dispute. A tradition that claims ancient roots and shows no dated source is asking you to take its word.
What Black Moon Lilith is held to mean
Within that modern reading, the point marks a refusal. It is the part of a person that was shamed, hidden, or told to be quiet, and that will not comply any longer.
Two things set the flavour of that refusal.
The sign says what kind of refusal it is. Lilith in Leo refuses to be dimmed. Lilith in Virgo refuses to earn a place by being useful. Lilith in Capricorn refuses to keep climbing on other people’s terms.

How to find your own Black Moon Lilith
You need three things: your birth date, your birth time, and your birth city. The date alone gives you the sign. The time and the city are what fix the house.
Then check one setting. Look in the chart software for an option named mean or true. If the option exists, pick mean, unless you have a reason to do otherwise. If there is no such option, the answer is almost certainly mean, because that is the standard default.
If two sites disagree with each other, you now know why. One used the smoothed figure. The other used the exact one. Go back and check the setting rather than picking a favourite.
How I measured all of this
A number you cannot reproduce is worth nothing. Here is the whole method in plain words.
The mean Lilith comes from the standard formula for the mean longitude of the near point of the lunar orbit. That formula is published in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 47. I added 180 degrees to turn the near point into the far point. It is referred to the equinox of date, which is the frame a birth chart uses.
The true Lilith comes from the real position and speed of the Moon at each moment, taken from the astronomy-engine library. From those two figures I worked out the exact oval the Moon was riding at that second. Then I read the direction of its far end and plotted it on the zodiac band.
Both series were sampled once a day from 1 January 1950 to 1 January 2041. That is 33,239 readings for each method. Sign borders in the dated table were then narrowed to the second.
Four checks were run on the output.
First, the mean Lilith was computed a second way, by taking the node of the lunar orbit and the angle from the node to the near point, then adding them back together. The two routes agree to better than one ten-thousandth of a degree. That rules out a slip in the formula.
Second, the day counts add up. The 12,056 days of disagreement and the 21,183 days of agreement sum to 33,239, and the two shares sum to 100 percent. The six rows of the gap table sum to 33,239 as well.
Third, the stay in each sign came out the same length every single time, which is what a smoothed figure has to do.
Fourth, the shape of the oval computed for the true Lilith stayed between 0.026 and 0.077 across the whole span. Reference works give the same range for the real lunar orbit. A figure outside that range would have meant a broken calculation.

The rounding is harmless over one pass and drifts by about three days over a decade. Use the dated table above rather than counting in whole months.
