Black Moon Lilith in Cancer: Your Sun Sign Tips It Into Gemini or Leo

Black Moon Lilith in Cancer comes with a catch that most guides skip. There are two ways to work out where Lilith sits, and they do not always land in the same sign. I measured the share of time they agree while Lilith passes through Cancer. The answer is about 64 times in 100. The rest of the time, one of them says Cancer and the other says Gemini or Leo.

The twist is what decides it. It is the Sun. Born with the Sun in Cancer, your two Liliths agree 74 times in 100. Born with the Sun in Scorpio or Pisces, they agree less than 60 times in 100. Your Sun sign even picks the side. With some Sun signs the second Lilith slips back into Gemini. With others it runs ahead into Leo. This page shows the full table, the dates of every pass since 1942, what the placement is held to mean, and how each number was measured.

An empty point at the far end of the Moon’s path

Black Moon Lilith is not a planet or a rock. It is a spot in space with nothing in it. The Moon does not circle Earth in a neat ring. It runs a squashed loop, an oval. At one end the Moon comes close to us. At the other end it swings far out. That far end has a name, the apogee, which means the far point of an orbit. Black Moon Lilith is the direction of that far point, marked on the band of the zodiac.

There are two ways to find it. The mean Lilith smooths out every wobble. It moves the same small step each day and never goes backward. The true Lilith reads the far end of the exact oval the Moon is riding at that second. The Sun keeps pulling on the Moon, so this oval keeps changing shape. The true Lilith races ahead, stops and turns back. Our main guide, Black Moon Lilith explained, measured the two over 1950 to 2040. They name a different sign on 36.3 percent of days. This page asks a narrower question. What happens in Cancer, and why?

Why Cancer is a special sign for this point

Each sign has a ruling planet, a body that owns the sign the way a landlord owns a flat. The Moon rules Cancer. Ptolemy wrote this rule down in his Tetrabiblos in the second century. He gave the Sun one sign, Leo, and the Moon one sign, Cancer. Every other planet got two. Our page on the Cancer sign shows how rarely the Moon is actually at home for a Cancer Sun.

Now put Lilith there. Lilith is not a body of its own. It is a mark on the path of the Moon. So Lilith in Cancer is the far end of the Moon’s own path, sitting in the Moon’s own sign. Think of a house and its back door. The Moon is the owner. Lilith is the door at the far end of the yard, the one the owner forgets. In Cancer, that door opens onto the owner’s own home.

One honest note. Ptolemy knew nothing of Lilith as a chart point. Nobody read it in a birth chart before the 1970s. The rule that the Moon owns Cancer is about 1,900 years old. The reading of Lilith is about 50 years old. Both are real, but they come from very different times. For the Moon itself in this sign, see Moon in Cancer.

Every pass of the mean Lilith through Cancer since 1942

The mean Lilith moves at one steady speed. It takes 8.85 years to go round the whole zodiac and stays about 269 days in each sign. That makes a clean table. Here is every pass from 1942 to the next one in 2031. Dates are in New York time, since most of our readers were born in the United States.

Each pass lasts 269.3 days. Each new pass starts about 8 years and 10 months after the last. Look at the months in the left column. They step back by about two months each time. That drift matters later on this page, because it changes which Sun signs share each pass.

Were you born within a day of a border? Then check your chart twice. Chart programs use slightly different formulas for the mean Lilith. The two formulas I tested differ by up to 20 hours at a border. In UTC, the world clock that most tables use, the 2022 entry falls at 21:47 on April 13, four hours later than New York.

How much of the time the true Lilith agrees

Now the second Lilith. While the mean Lilith sits in Cancer, where is the true one? I checked every 12 hours from the year 1600 to the year 2400. That span holds about 90 passes through Cancer. Here is the split.

Where the true Lilith stands Share of the time the mean Lilith is in Cancer.
Also in Cancer, so both agree 63.8 percent of the time.
Back in Gemini, the sign before 18.1 percent of the time.
Ahead in Leo, the sign after 18.1 percent of the time.

That is close to the site-wide figure for all signs, so Cancer is not a special case here. The average gap between the two points is 10.9 degrees. A degree is one part in 360 of the full circle, and a sign is 30 degrees wide. The largest gap I found during a Cancer pass is 30.0 degrees, a whole sign.

The pass you were born in shifts this a little. The eleven passes from 1942 to 2031 range from 60.3 percent agreement, in 2004 to 2005, to 67.2 percent, in 1951 to 1952. The 2022 to 2023 pass sits at 65.7 percent.

Where in the sign the mean Lilith sits matters much more. In the first ten degrees of Cancer, the true Lilith falls back into Gemini 35.6 percent of the time. In the last ten degrees, it runs into Leo 35.7 percent of the time. In the middle ten degrees, the two agree 69.1 percent of the time. That part is common sense. A point near a border crosses it more easily.

The link runs the other way too. Some people have the true Lilith in Cancer while the mean one is still in Gemini or already in Leo. Over the long window, that is 36.3 percent of all true Lilith in Cancer charts.

Your Sun sign picks the side

Here is the result I set out to test. I sorted every reading with the mean Lilith in Cancer by the sign of the Sun at that moment. Then I asked two things. What share of the time do the two Liliths agree? And when they do not, which way does the true Lilith go?

Sun sign at birth Both Liliths in Cancer True Lilith in Gemini True Lilith in Leo.
Aries 61.0 percent 19.3 percent 19.7 percent.
Taurus 61.3 percent 32.2 percent 6.5 percent.
Gemini 66.3 percent 29.6 percent 4.1 percent.
Cancer 73.8 percent 13.1 percent 13.2 percent.
Leo 66.6 percent 4.2 percent 29.3 percent.
Virgo 61.0 percent 6.7 percent 32.3 percent.
Libra 61.8 percent 19.3 percent 19.0 percent.
Scorpio 59.5 percent 33.6 percent 6.9 percent.
Sagittarius 62.8 percent 31.8 percent 5.4 percent.
Capricorn 68.6 percent 15.6 percent 15.8 percent.
Aquarius 63.0 percent 5.3 percent 31.7 percent.
Pisces 59.6 percent 6.8 percent 33.6 percent.

Three groups come out of this table.

  • Sun in Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio or Sagittarius. When the two Liliths split, the true one falls back into Gemini five to seven times more than it runs into Leo.
  • Sun in Leo, Virgo, Aquarius or Pisces. The mirror case. The true Lilith leans forward into Leo.
  • Sun in Cancer, Capricorn, Aries or Libra. No lean either way. The splits fall evenly on both sides.

Sun in Cancer is the best case of all. The two Liliths agree 73.8 percent of the time, and the gap between them averages 9.5 degrees. For Sun in Scorpio the gap averages 11.9 degrees. So a Cancer Sun with Lilith in Cancer has the steadiest reading of this placement. Sun in Scorpio or Pisces has the shakiest one.

Why the Sun does this

The Moon’s oval has a long axis, a line from its near end to its far end. Lilith sits on the far end of that line. The Sun pulls on the Moon all the time, and that pull bends the oval.

When the Sun lines up with the long axis, it stretches the oval. The oval gets longer and thinner. I measured this. The oval’s stretch, which astronomers call eccentricity, averages 0.0625 when the Sun sits on the axis. It drops to 0.0483 when the Sun sits at a right angle to it. A long, thin oval has a clear far end. So the true Lilith stays close to the mean one.

When the Sun sits at an angle to the axis, it twists the oval toward itself. Picture a stick floating in a pond, pulled from one side. The stick turns. The end of the axis nearest the Sun swings toward it, and the whole line turns with it. Lilith, on the far end, moves too.

Now apply this to Cancer. When the mean Lilith is in Cancer, the Sun sits on its axis when it is in Cancer or in Capricorn, across the wheel. That is why those two Sun signs show the best agreement. When the Sun stands about 45 degrees ahead of Lilith, in Virgo or Leo, it pulls the far end forward into Leo. When the Sun stands about 45 degrees behind, in Taurus or Gemini, it pulls the far end back toward Gemini. The same holds for the Sun signs across the wheel from those.

Two rhythms stack up. The slow one depends only on the Sun and the axis. It repeats every 206 days and moves the true Lilith by up to about 10 degrees on average. The fast one also depends on where the Moon is in its month. It repeats about every 32 days and swings the point by up to about 15 degrees. Astronomers call this second one evection, the largest pull of the Sun on the Moon. Ptolemy already measured its effect on the Moon’s position in his Almagest. These two rhythms alone explain 93 percent of the true Lilith’s swings.

What Lilith in Cancer is held to mean

The modern reading treats Lilith as a refusal. It marks the part of a person that was shamed or hushed, and that will not go along with it any more. Demetra George framed it this way in her work on the dark side of the Moon. The sign tells you what kind of refusal it is.

Cancer is the sign of home, food, family and care. In the reading, Lilith here is the refusal to mother everyone. People with this placement learned early that love came with a job attached. They were the one who kept the peace, cooked the meal, read the mood of the room. Lilith is the part that is tired of that job. It says no to care that is expected but never offered back.

This shows up in a few plain ways.

  • A fierce guard around private life, and a closed door when trust breaks.
  • Strong feelings about family rules, kept or thrown out, rarely ignored.
  • Anger that rises when someone takes care for granted.
  • A pull toward making a home that is truly one’s own, not a copy of the family one.

Liz Greene wrote at length on the Moon as the image of the mother and of early care. Lilith in Cancer brings the shadow side of that image forward. The need for care is real. So is the anger at care that came with strings. The work is to tell the two apart, and to give care by choice rather than by duty.

In love, the pattern is a test. A partner is watched for signs that care will flow both ways. Small lapses feel large. The fix is plain words, said early. Name the need before it turns into a grudge. At home, the pull is toward a space with firm walls and a door that locks from the inside.

Which Lilith should you read?

Start with the mean Lilith. It is the default in most chart software, and most books assume it. If your program has a setting named mean or true, that setting decides what you see.

Then check the true Lilith as well. If both land in Cancer, the reading above holds without a doubt. If they split, read both signs. Use the Sun table above to see how likely that split was for you. A Taurus Sun with the true Lilith in Gemini is the common case, not an error. Our pages on Black Moon Lilith in Gemini and Black Moon Lilith in Leo cover the two signs next door.

How I measured this

A number you cannot check is worth little. Here is the method in plain words.

First route. I used the Swiss Ephemeris, version 2.10, a standard library for chart software. It gives the mean Lilith, the true Lilith and the Sun directly. I read all three every 12 hours from January 1, 1600, to January 1, 2400. That is 584,388 readings. All positions use the tropical zodiac, the one tied to the seasons.

Second route. I rebuilt the true Lilith from scratch with a second library, called astronomy-engine. It gives the Moon’s exact position and speed. From those two, I worked out the oval the Moon was riding at that second, and read its far end. For the mean Lilith, I used the formula printed in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms. Over the same 800 years, the two routes put the true Lilith within 0.06 degrees of each other on average. Every row of the Sun table matches to within 0.3 points.

The dates come from bisection. That means cutting the time window in half again and again until the border crossing is pinned to the second. The table above uses the Meeus formula, the one our main Lilith guide uses. The Swiss Ephemeris dates differ by at most 20 hours.

To test the Sun’s role, I fitted the gap between the two Liliths against the angles of the Sun and the Moon. Two terms carry most of it: one of 15.5 degrees on the 32-day rhythm and one of 10.5 degrees on the 206-day rhythm. They explain 93 percent of the swings. With a few smaller terms added, what is left over is about one degree.

Questions people ask about Lilith in Cancer

When was Black Moon Lilith in Cancer?

The mean Lilith was last in Cancer from April 13, 2022, to January 7, 2023, New York time. The pass before ran from June 8, 2013, to March 4, 2014. The next one runs from February 17, 2031, to November 13, 2031.

How long does Lilith stay in Cancer?

The mean Lilith stays 269.3 days, just under nine months. The true Lilith has no fixed answer. It moves in and out of the sign many times, because it turns back more than half of the time.

Why does my chart show Lilith in Gemini or Leo instead of Cancer?

Your chart uses the true Lilith, or your birth date sits near a border. While the mean Lilith is in Cancer, the true one sits in Gemini or Leo 36.2 percent of the time. Your Sun sign tells you which side is more likely.

Does my Sun sign change my Lilith sign?

It does not change the mean Lilith. It does change the odds for the true one. With a Sun in Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio or Sagittarius, the true Lilith leans back into Gemini. With a Sun in Leo, Virgo, Aquarius or Pisces, it leans forward into Leo.

What does Lilith in Cancer mean?

In the modern reading, it is the refusal to mother everyone. It marks anger at care that was expected but not returned, and a strong need for a home that is truly one’s own.

Is Lilith in Cancer tied to the Moon?

Yes, twice over. Lilith is the far end of the Moon’s own path. Cancer is the sign the Moon rules. So this placement puts a point of the Moon’s orbit inside the Moon’s own sign.

What to take from it

Lilith in Cancer is two answers, not one. The mean Lilith gives you a clean date table. The true Lilith agrees with it about 64 times in 100. The Sun at your birth decides which way the true one leans when they part. Check both figures, check your Sun, and read the sign they share. Where they split, read both.
