Scorpio Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility joins two fixed signs three steps apart. That gap is a square, an angle Ptolemy called discordant. Both signs hold the middle of a season, so both partners like to stay put. Of the twelve Venus squares, this one is the least common.
There is a second, softer link, but only under one reading of the old rules. Scorpio and Aquarius sit on either side of the shortest day of the year. Read by exact degree, their points mirror each other across it. Read by whole signs, they do not. We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to measure both. Read the page as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

What a Venus sign is
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Venus never strays far from the Sun in our sky. So people with Venus in Scorpio are born between late August and mid January. People with Venus in Aquarius are born between late November and mid April.
A fixed square, by the old rules
An aspect is an angle between two points on the wheel. Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 13, he counted four aspects. He called the trine and the sextile harmonious. He called the square and the opposition discordant.
Signs three steps apart form a square, an angle of 90 degrees. So Scorpio and Aquarius share a tense aspect. Ptolemy did not mean that such people cannot love. He meant the two signs have unlike natures that rub.
The natures do differ. Scorpio is water, and Aquarius is air. In the old scheme, water is cold and moist, and air is hot and moist. They share only moisture. Scorpio counts as a feminine, or receptive, sign. Aquarius counts as a masculine, or active, one.
One thing is shared. Both signs are fixed. Scorpio holds the middle of autumn, and Aquarius the middle of winter. Fixed signs keep what they have. Out of 78 Venus pairs, this is the only square of water and air between two fixed signs.
A mirror across the shortest day
Ptolemy had a second rule, in chapter 15. Think of the year as a wheel with the two turning points of the Sun, the longest and the shortest day. Take two points at the same distance on each side of one of them. When the Sun passes through either point, the days have the same length. Ptolemy wrote that such parts are “of equal power.” He added that they “behold” one another, because each of the pair “rises from the same part of the horizon and sets in the same part.”
Scorpio ends where Sagittarius begins, one sign before the shortest day at 0 degrees Capricorn. Aquarius starts one sign after it. So the two signs flank midwinter. A day in mid November lasts about as long as a day in late January.
Two readings of the mirror
Old authors used this rule in two ways, and they give different answers for this pair.
Read by degree, the mirror line runs through 0 degrees Cancer and 0 degrees Capricorn. A point in Scorpio then mirrors a point in Aquarius. For example, 10 degrees Scorpio mirrors 20 degrees Aquarius. The two degrees always add up to 30. William Lilly used this reading in Christian Astrology in 1647. He called the mirror point an antiscion, and he read a planet on another’s antiscion as a hidden link.
Read by whole signs, the pairs are different. In note 83 to his translation, Frank Robbins lists them: Gemini with Leo, Taurus with Virgo, Aries with Libra, Pisces with Scorpio, and Aquarius with Sagittarius. Cancer and Capricorn “are left without mates.” In this reading, the mirror is centered on the whole signs of Cancer and Capricorn. So Scorpio beholds Pisces, and Aquarius beholds Sagittarius. Scorpio and Aquarius do not behold each other.
So we measured the degree reading, the only one in which this bond exists.

Under Lilly’s reading, about 1 couple in 15 has the bond within a degree. Under the whole-sign reading, no couple has it. Both views are honest readings of the old texts. They simply answer different questions.
The other rule, in chapter 14, pairs signs that “command” and “obey.” It does not apply here under either reading. By whole signs, Robbins’s note 80 pairs Scorpio with Virgo. By degree, Scorpio mirrors Leo and Aquarius mirrors Taurus.
Venus in exile beside a guest of Saturn
Each sign has a ruling planet. Think of it as the landlord of the sign. In the old system, Mars rules Scorpio, and Saturn rules Aquarius. Modern astrologers add Pluto for Scorpio and Uranus for Aquarius.
Venus rules Taurus, the sign straight across from Scorpio. So in Scorpio she sits in the house opposite her own. The old books call this exile, or detriment. In Aquarius, Venus holds no major rank. Astrologers call this state peregrine, a Latin word for a traveler. She does hold a few degrees there as her terms, a minor share of rule.
Chapter 18 adds a detail. Ptolemy splits the signs into four triangles. In the water triangle, which includes Scorpio, Venus is a co-ruler by day. The air triangle, which includes Aquarius, goes to Saturn by day and Mercury by night. Venus has no share there.

How common is this pair?
Venus does not spend the same time in each sign. About every 19 months it seems to move backward for some six weeks. Astrologers call this retrograde motion. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
Take two people at random. The chance that one has Venus in Scorpio and the other in Aquarius is twice the product of the two shares. That comes to 1.32 percent, or about 1 couple in 76. The pair ranks 63rd of the 78 Venus pairs. Among the twelve squares, it comes last. The most common square, Taurus and Leo, reaches 1.45 percent. The gaps are small, so read the rank as a detail, not a verdict.
How close are the two Venus points?
A sign is 30 degrees wide. So a Scorpio Venus and an Aquarius Venus can sit anywhere from about 60 to 120 degrees apart. By sign, every such couple has a square. By degree, only some do. Astrologers allow an orb, the miss they accept around an exact angle.

So fewer than half of these couples have a true square at a common orb of 8 degrees. That share is close to the same for every pair of signs. The edges can soften the picture. A late Scorpio Venus and an early Aquarius Venus come close to 60 degrees, a sextile. An early Scorpio Venus and a late Aquarius Venus come close to 120 degrees, a trine. One of these friendly angles turns up within 8 degrees in 7.17 percent of couples.
The Sun signs behind each Venus
Venus orbits inside the Earth’s path. From here, it never gets more than 47.28 degrees from the Sun. So your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the four signs closest to it. Among people with Venus in a given sign, which Sun signs do they have?

The two ranges overlap only on Sagittarius and Capricorn, the signs around midwinter. So the partners share a Sun sign in just 5.34 percent of these couples, about 1 in 19.

The top mix covers only about 1 couple in 11, so it is a lean, not a rule. A Scorpio Sun with an Aquarius Sun comes ninth, at 5.4 percent.
The Suns echo the square
The most common gap between the two Suns is three signs, the same square the Venus signs form. It turns up in 24.0 percent of these couples, about 1 in 4. A trine follows at 19.1 percent, then a sextile at 18.8 percent.
In 41.14 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 72nd of the 78 pairs.
How the tradition reads this pair
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the old symbols describe the two styles.
Where the pair holds
Both signs are fixed, so both partners are loyal in the old reading. Neither one wants to start over. Once a bond forms, both work to keep it. Both also value a mind of their own. The Scorpio Venus guards its inner life. The Aquarius Venus guards its freedom and its ideas.
Under Lilly’s reading, a couple with Venuses on mirror degrees gets a note of balance. In Ptolemy’s words, such parts have “equal power.” Neither one simply rules the other.
Where it snags
The friction is about closeness. The Scorpio Venus wants intensity and a bond that goes deep. The Aquarius Venus wants friendship, space and fair terms. What feels like devotion to one partner can feel like pressure to the other. What feels like calm to one can feel like distance to the other.
Two fixed signs also dig in. When they disagree, neither likes to bend first. Modern writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo read a Venus through its element. Water loves by feeling. Air loves by talking and sharing ideas.

What the evidence says
No study has tested Venus pairs. The largest test of love signs used the Sun. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors on the forms.
So a square is not a warning, and a mirror is not a promise. The odds on this page are odds about the sky, not about love.
How we measured
All figures cover 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400, in the tropical zodiac, seen from the center of the Earth. Every moment of birth counts the same. We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree and mirror figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 18.
