Libra Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility joins two next-door signs at opposite ends of Venus’s scale of rank. In Libra, Venus is at home. One sign later, in Scorpio, she is in her detriment, or exile, in the house of Mars. One step takes her from her strongest seat to one of her weakest.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote about the two signs. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
From home to exile in one step
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. The detriment is the sign opposite a home, where the planet is a guest far from its own ground.

Ptolemy hands out the homes in Book I, chapter 17, of the Tetrabiblos. Venus gets Libra and Taurus. Mars gets Scorpio and Aries. Scorpio sits across the wheel from Taurus, so a Venus there is far from one of her homes. Later authors, such as William Lilly in Christian Astrology (1647), call that place her detriment.
Four of the 78 Venus pairs set Venus at home beside Venus in exile. Two of them are next-door signs: Aries with Taurus, and this pair. Here the step runs from Venus’s own sign into a sign of Mars.

How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Libra and the other Venus in Scorpio? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.35 percent, or about one couple in 74. That ranks 55th of the 78 Venus pairs, and ninth of the twelve next-door pairs.
Averse by sign: Ptolemy’s reading of neighbors
Libra and Scorpio sit side by side, 30 degrees apart. Modern astrologers call that a semi-sextile. Ptolemy did not count it as an aspect. In chapter 13 he lists only four: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile.
Chapter 16 goes further. Signs one apart, he wrote, “are as it were averted from one another.” Averted means turned away, like two people standing back to back. He calls such signs “disjunct,” or alien. But he adds a condition. Signs are disjunct only if they share none of the ties he lists in chapters 14 and 15. Those ties are mirror links, and each can be read in two ways.
No mirror tie by either reading
Chapter 14 names signs that “command” and “obey.” They sit at equal distance from an equinox, so they rise over the horizon in equal time. Chapter 15 names signs that “behold” each other and are of equal power. They sit at equal distance from a solstice, so the Sun gives them days of equal length.
The first reading uses whole signs. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs in his notes. The second reading uses exact degrees, with the mirror set on 0 degrees Libra or 0 degrees Cancer. William Lilly called such mirror points antiscia and contra-antiscia.

Libra and Scorpio never name each other. We checked the degrees too. No couple has its two Venuses on mirror points, even at a 3 degree margin. So the pair is disjunct on both readings.
That is less common than it sounds. By whole signs, all 24 pairs that sit one or five signs apart are disjunct. By degrees, eight of them gain a mirror tie, which leaves 16. The semi-sextile in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses in next-door signs can be anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees apart. The exact semi-sextile is 30. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. At an 8 degree orb, 46.20 percent of these couples come that close. That value is almost the same for every Venus pair, so it is not a trait of this couple.
The edges tell more. At the same orb, 7.13 percent of these couples form a different aspect by degree. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Libra and at 1 degree Scorpio. The gap is 2 degrees, a conjunction across the border. Now picture 1 degree Libra and 29 degrees Scorpio. The gap is 58 degrees, close to a sextile. By sign, both couples are averse. In the sky, they form a real aspect.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Four Sun signs show up in both lists: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius. So these partners share a Sun sign in 19.02 percent of couples, about one in five.
The likeliest Suns are Libra and Scorpio too
Now combine two partners. We multiplied the Sun sign shares for each and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Libra with a Scorpio counts once.

The most likely Sun pair is the same as the Venus pair. But look at how it forms. In 5.52 percent of couples, each partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 8.43 percent, the signs cross: the Libra Venus belongs to a Scorpio Sun, and the Scorpio Venus to a Libra Sun. The crossed version is the more common one. Even so, the top pair covers only one couple in seven. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.
How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.

The two Suns never face each other. In most couples they sit close, as the two Venuses do.
Libra and Scorpio by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here because they are a Libra Sun and a Scorpio Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not always. Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments, across all signs. A Libra Sun can hold Venus in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. A Scorpio Sun has the same kind of range, one sign later. So the Sun pair and the Venus pair are two separate layers.
Turn it around. In 41.47 percent of Libra Venus and Scorpio Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 53rd of the 78 pairs. In 5.52 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Elements. Libra is air, the element of words and ideas. Scorpio is water, the element of feeling. The old scheme sees them as hard to mix.
- Pace. Libra is cardinal and starts things. Scorpio is fixed and holds on once it commits.
- Rulers. Venus rules one side, Mars the other. Charm meets intensity.
- The sore spot. The Libra Venus smooths things over for the sake of peace. The Scorpio Venus reads that as a hidden truth, and digs.
A simple habit helps. Let the Scorpio partner ask one direct question a day, and get a direct answer. Let the Libra partner name what feels unfair before it grows. Each then gets to love in their own way.
Read in the old way, the two signs sit back to back, turned away from each other. Yet the tradition also placed them in one figure, the Scorpion with its claws. That is a fair picture of this couple: close in the sky, facing different ways.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a home is not a promise, and an exile is not a warning. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree and mirror figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
