Cancer Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility is a pair the old books left without a bridge. The two signs sit five apart, a gap of 150 degrees called a quincunx. Ptolemy gave that gap no aspect. He gave these two signs no other tie either. They do not command and obey, and they do not behold each other. He called such signs disjunct, meaning cut off. That holds on both readings of his ties, by whole sign and by degree.
This page shows what that means, and checks it against the sky. The degree-by-degree reading of the old rules, which narrows some ties, does not add one here. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.
Water meets air, five signs apart
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you, what you value and how you show care. It is not the Sun sign from your horoscope. This page is about a couple where one partner has Venus in Cancer and the other has Venus in Aquarius.
Cancer is water, the element of feeling, memory and home. Aquarius is air, the element of ideas, talk and groups. Cancer is a cardinal sign, one that opens a season, here summer. Aquarius is a fixed sign, one that holds the middle of a season, here winter. Among the 78 Venus pairs, no other quincunx joins a cardinal water sign to a fixed air sign.
The evidence, before the chart talk
The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. His 2007 paper, Ten Million Marriages, used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from errors in the data.
Voas tested Sun signs only. We know of no test of that size for Venus signs. So what follows gives two people words for how they love. It cannot tell them whether they will last.
Ptolemy’s four ties, and none of them here
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapters 13 to 16, he sorts every pair of signs by how they relate. There are four kinds of tie.

In chapter 16, Ptolemy says disjunct signs are alien to each other. They share none of the ties above. Signs one apart or five apart can fall in this group. Read by exact degree, some of them are saved by a mirror tie. Cancer and Sagittarius, for one, are five apart, yet by degree Cancer commands Sagittarius. Read by whole signs, none is saved. Cancer and Aquarius have no rescue on either reading.
No mirror at any degree
Ptolemy’s mirror ties can be read by whole sign, as in the notes of his translator Frank Robbins, or by degree. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), uses mirror points. Antiscia mirror a degree across the line from 0 degrees of Cancer to 0 degrees of Capricorn, the solstice line. Contra-antiscia mirror it across the line from 0 degrees of Aries to 0 degrees of Libra, the equinox line.
For a pair linked by degree, such as Cancer and Sagittarius, the tie holds within 3 degrees for about one couple in five. Could it add a tie to a cut-off pair, near the sign edges? We checked this one over eight centuries, with a 3 degree orb.

The reason is simple. Cancer’s solstice mirror is Gemini, and its equinox mirror is Sagittarius. Aquarius mirrors Scorpio and Taurus. Aquarius never lands on Cancer, whatever the degree. So both readings, by sign and by degree, give the same answer. The 16 pairs cut off by degree are cut off by whole sign too, since a degree mirror always falls inside one whole sign. This couple has no classical bond between its two Venus signs.
That is not a verdict on the couple. It only means the old rules offer no ready-made bridge. The two partners build their own.
How common each Venus is
Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. Those loops make Venus stay longer in some signs than in others. Venus also repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so a short window can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

The spread is small. Neither Venus here is rare, and both sit close to one person in twelve.
Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Cancer and the other Venus in Aquarius? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.41 percent, or one couple in 71. That ranks 22nd of the 78 Venus pairs.
The Sun signs behind each Venus
Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

The two lists share no sign, so these partners never share a Sun sign. The likeliest Sun pair is a Leo Sun with a Pisces Sun, at 8.74 percent of these couples. Next come Gemini with Pisces at 8.64 percent, and Leo with Capricorn at 8.45 percent. No single pair reaches one couple in ten. Treat these as a lean, not a rule.
Sorted by the angle between the two Suns, the quincunx leads at 37.0 percent. So more than one couple in three repeats the Venus angle in the Suns. Next come the trine at 24.3 percent and the opposition at 19.1 percent. The square follows at 13.6 percent, then the sextile at 5.2 and next-door Suns at 0.8 percent.
A Cancer and Aquarius by Sun sign is not this couple
Many readers land here because they are a Cancer and an Aquarius by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.
A Cancer Sun has Venus in Cancer 24.1 percent of the time. An Aquarius Sun has Venus in Aquarius 23.2 percent of the time. Both must hold at once. Seen from the Venus side, 41.6 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If you do not know your birth time and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.
Venus in Cancer: a guest of the Moon
The old books rank each planet by the sign it stands in. That rank is called dignity. Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra, and exalted in Pisces. She is in exile in Aries and Scorpio, and falls in Virgo. Cancer and Aquarius hold none of those ranks.
Lilly calls a planet with no major rank peregrine, from the Latin for a traveler. It takes the tone of its host. Cancer belongs to the Moon. So this Venus loves in the Moon’s way: with care, food, memory and a safe base. The older table of Dorotheus of Sidon adds a small claim, since it gives Venus the water signs in a daytime chart. Venus in Aquarius: a guest of Saturn
In the old scheme, Aquarius belongs to Saturn. Ptolemy gave Saturn the two signs across from the houses of the Sun and the Moon. Aquarius faces Leo, the Sun’s house. So the host of this Venus is the cold planet of the old books.
Modern astrologers add a second ruler, Uranus, found in 1781. With Saturn as host, this Venus is loyal, cool and careful. With Uranus, it is free, odd and quick to change. So both partners love as guests. One lives with the Moon, the ruler of feeling. The other lives with Saturn, the ruler of distance and form.
Is the quincunx exact in degrees?
Two Venuses five signs apart can sit anywhere from 120 to 180 degrees apart. The quincunx is exact at 150 degrees. The gap allowed around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign.

These values are close to the same for every Venus pair. The edges tell more. With an 8 degree orb, 7.1 percent of these couples form a true aspect in degrees. Say Venus sits at 29 degrees of Cancer and at 1 degree of Aquarius. The gap is 182 degrees, an opposition in the sky. At the other edge, early Cancer and late Aquarius make a trine. So a small share of these couples do get one of Ptolemy’s aspects after all, across the sign line.
How the tradition reads the pair
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this match.
- Near and far. Cancer shows love by drawing close. Aquarius shows love by giving room and staying a friend.
- Feeling and idea. Water wants to be felt. Air wants to be understood. Each partner can name which one they need.
- Start and hold. A cardinal sign opens things. A fixed sign keeps them going once they start.
- No shortcut. With no classical bond, the pair cannot lean on the chart. They lean on plain talk instead.
Use this reading as a way to talk about closeness and space. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.
Mirror and orb shares use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs and Sun angles combine each partner’s Sun-sign shares from the table above. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 17.
