Gemini and Gemini compatibility sounds like the simplest match in the zodiac. Same sign, same ruler, same air element, same fast talk. Sign books call it a mirror, or a pair of twins holding hands. So we asked plain questions you can check. How many US couples are two Geminis? And are both partners really Geminis at all?
The first answer comes from 62 million US births. Pair two people born in the US at random, and both come out Gemini about 1 time in 136. The second answer is a surprise. About 1 Gemini couple in 7 has at least one partner born on a border date. On those four dates, the sign depends on the year and the hour. This guide gives you both numbers, how close two Gemini Suns really sit, and what the old books say about this pair. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

How common is a Gemini and Gemini couple?
Most pages on this pair start with a score, like 90 percent. Nobody says how the score is made, and you cannot check it. So we began with a count you can check: how many people are born under each sign.
Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. The Sun takes about a month to cross one. Gemini season runs from about May 21 to June 20. The exact hour shifts each year, and that matters a lot for this pair, as you will see.
We counted US births by exact date in two separate files. Both give the same picture.

Why not double the figure, as for a mixed pair? A Gemini and Leo couple can form two ways: Gemini woman and Leo man, or the other way round. Two Geminis can form only one way. So the chance is the Gemini share times itself: 8.56 percent times 8.56 percent.
That puts Gemini and Gemini fourth among the twelve same sign couples. Leo and Leo and Virgo and Virgo lead, at about 1 couple in 125 each. Cancer and Cancer comes next, at about 1 in 128. The rarest is Capricorn and Capricorn, at about 1 in 172.
Why is Gemini above an even split? Not because more babies are born per day in late spring. In Gemini season, US births run almost exactly at the yearly average pace. The reason is time. The short version: Gemini is big because the Earth moves slowly in early summer, not because of any baby boom.

Four dates that are not always Gemini
Here is the part no compatibility page tells you. Most sites print Gemini as May 21 to June 20, or May 21 to June 21. But the Sun does not enter a sign at the same hour every year.
A calendar year is 365 days. The Sun takes about 365 days and 6 hours to come back to the same point. So each year, the start of Gemini slips about 6 hours later. Every leap year, the extra day pulls it back. The time zone moves it too. An entry at 1 a.m. in New York is still the evening before in Los Angeles.
We checked every day of Gemini season from 2000 to 2014, in US Central time. For each date, we measured what share of its hours had the Sun in Gemini, in the least and the most Gemini year.

Astrologers call a birthday near a sign border a cusp birthday. Over a longer run of years, June 22 can join the list. Our guide to the zodiac signs and their real dates checked 91 years. It found that June 21, which the usual table calls Cancer, was in fact Gemini in 57 percent of those years.
Now count the people. Of all US Gemini births from 2000 to 2014, 7.6 percent fell on one of the four border dates. The older 1994 to 2003 file gives the same 7.6 percent. That is about 1 Gemini in 13.
A couple has two birthdays, so the odds add up. Both partners are born on safe dates in 85 percent of Gemini couples. In the other 15 percent, at least one partner sits on a border date. That is about 1 Gemini couple in 7.
What to do if one of you was born on a border date
You need three facts: the date, the hour, and the place of birth. With those, any chart tool will show where the Sun stood. If you do not know the hour, you are not stuck. Look up the year. In some years a May 21 birth is Gemini all day. In others, the first hours of the day still belong to Taurus.
Same sign, but not always the same Sun
A sign is a 30 degree slice. Two people can share it without sharing the Sun’s exact place. A Gemini born on May 22 and a Gemini born on June 19 have Suns about 27 degrees apart.
Astrologers call two points close together in the sky a conjunction. They only count it when the gap is small. The allowed margin is called the orb. So we measured how many Gemini couples fall inside each orb, weighted by real births.

A rule of thumb helps. One degree of the Sun is about one day of the calendar. If your birthdays are 8 days apart or less, your Suns are most likely within 8 degrees. Two random Geminis sit about 10.5 days apart on average. They share the same birthday about 1 time in 32.
What ten million marriages showed
A birth count tells you how common a pair is. It does not tell you if like attracts like. For that, the best test we know is British.
In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at every married couple in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth dates of both partners. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer ran a version in March 2008.

At first sight, Geminis married Geminis a little more than chance. Every same sign pair showed the same small excess. Voas traced it to the census form, not the sky. One person fills in the form for the whole house, and some wrote their own birthday twice. A shared birthday always makes a same sign couple.

In the cleaned data, Table 7 of the paper, the Gemini and Gemini cell stands at 73,231 couples, the chance figure. The test that settles it compares months with signs. The extra couples follow the calendar month, where form errors live. They do not follow the sign.
What the old books say about Gemini with Gemini
The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is one of the founding textbooks of Western astrology. In Book 1 he sorts the signs in several ways. Two Geminis match on every one.

Ptolemy calls four signs “bicorporeal,” which means double bodied: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. His reason is the weather. These signs close a season, so they share the nature of two seasons, one at each end. For Gemini, that is late spring turning into early summer. So a Gemini couple is two double signs, a twin pair of twins.
Ptolemy counts four aspects, or angles, between signs: opposition, trine, square and sextile. Two planets in the same sign form none of them. Later writers call that link a conjunction. Hellenistic astrologers, as Chris Brennan explains in his book on that period, called it being present together. It is a bond of shared space, not of angle.
Ptolemy’s other links pair Gemini with other signs, not with itself. He says two signs “behold” each other when they sit the same distance from a solstice, so their days are the same length. The stars of the Twins now sit in Cancer
Gemini is named after two bright stars, Castor and Pollux, the twin brothers of Greek myth. You might think a Gemini Sun stands near them. It does not, and the gap keeps growing.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. It starts the signs from the spring equinox, not from the stars. The Earth’s axis wobbles slowly, like a spinning top. This wobble, called precession, moves the equinox back along the stars by about one degree every 72 years. So the signs drift away from the star groups that gave them their names.
We placed both stars in the tropical zodiac. We took their positions from the star catalog for the year 2000, turned them into zodiac degrees, and added 26 years of drift. The result matches the standard printed values for 2000, which are 20 degrees 14 minutes of Cancer for Castor and 23 degrees 13 minutes for Pollux.

So no Gemini born in the last fifteen centuries has the Sun on the Twins. The Sun reaches them in mid July, deep in Cancer season. This does not make your sign wrong. The tropical sign follows the seasons, and Gemini is still the last slice of spring. It just means the name is a memory of the sky, not a map of it.
Mercury, the ruler you share
Mercury is the planet of speech, study and trade in astrology. It rules Gemini. Ptolemy gives a reason. Mercury never strays more than one sign from the Sun. So it gets the two signs next to the homes of the Sun and the Moon: Gemini and Virgo.
That shared ruler has a number attached. Mercury stays close to the Sun, so a Gemini can only have Mercury in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. Our page on the Gemini sign found Mercury in Gemini for 47.85 percent of Geminis, over the years 1600 to 2400.
For one Gemini, that is close to a coin flip. For a couple born in different years, it is two flips. So about 1 Gemini couple in 4 has both Mercurys at home in Gemini. About 1 in 4 has neither. Why does this matter? In the sign books, Mercury sets how a person talks and thinks. Two Geminis share a Sun sign but can still speak in different styles. A Gemini with Mercury in Taurus talks slower and holds a view longer. A Gemini with Mercury in Cancer talks from feeling and memory.
Two Geminis in daily life
Here is how the style looks when it meets itself. These are sign portraits, not facts about any person you know.
Gemini, in the sign books, is the mind that gathers, sorts and passes on what it hears. It likes news, jokes, short trips and a full calendar. Put two of them together and the talk rarely stops. They can plan a weekend, pick a film and argue about both in ten minutes, and enjoy all of it.
The same trait cuts two ways. Two quick minds can start more plans than two people can finish. Both can drift toward the next idea before the last one lands. And when both partners talk to solve things, feelings can get talked about more than felt.
Where the friction shows up
With the same sign on both sides, the snags come from too much of one thing, not from a clash. Here are four from the sign books, with a small step for each.

None of these steps needs a chart. Any two quick minds can use them. That is the honest point: the sign gives a name to a pattern, and the fix lives in plain talk.
The rest of the chart counts for more
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Astrologers who compare two charts, a method called synastry, look at all of them. Three matter most for love. The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. Venus shows what they find lovely and how they show care. Mars shows how they chase what they want and how they argue.
So one Gemini can have a Capricorn Moon and a Taurus Venus. The other can have a Pisces Moon and a Leo Venus. Each of those changes the picture more than the shared Sun does. What each partner finds lovely is a Venus question. Our page on Gemini and Gemini Venus signs covers that side.
Voas expects this reply in his paper. He answers that the Sun sign is the part of astrology most people use. Any real effect, however small, would still show in ten million couples. If you know both birth dates and times, the full chart is where the detail lives. If you only know the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map, not the ground.
How we measured
Birth shares come from real daily counts. We took US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security Administration file. We checked them against the 1994 to 2003 file of the National Center for Health Statistics. Both were compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. For each date, we placed the Sun with exact entry times into each sign, in US Central time. A day on a border was split by the share of hours on each side.
The border dates used the same entry times. A date counts as a border date if, in any year of the file, part of it had the Sun outside Gemini. The share of Gemini births on those dates came out at 7.6 percent in both files. Squaring the safe share gives the couple figure.
The orbs used two routes. Route one took the 2000 to 2014 births and placed the Sun with the Swiss Ephemeris, 96 times per day. It paired every Gemini with every other Gemini, weighted by births. Route two took the 1994 to 2003 births and a different code library, Astronomy Engine, at 48 steps per day. Both gave 46 percent within 8 degrees and a 10.5 day average gap.
The census counts come from the Voas paper, Tables 1, 6 and 7. The paper is online at magonia.com. The Ptolemy quotes follow the Loeb edition translated by F. E. Robbins, Book 1, chapters 11 to 18. The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date. People move, and many couples meet across borders. Other time zones shift the border hours a little. The US figures are a close guide, not an exact census of couples.

Are two Geminis compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, over ten million marriages in England and Wales, found no real pull between Geminis once form errors were removed. As a symbol, the pair shares one ruler, Mercury, and one element, air.
What percentage of couples are both Gemini?
About 0.73 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 136, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. An even split of signs would give 1 in 144.
Am I a Gemini if I was born on May 20, May 21, June 20 or June 21?
