If your Sun is in Taurus, odds are you were born with the Sun up. We counted US births from 1940 to 2030 with real hospital hours. About two Taurus Suns in three sit above the horizon, in the day half of the chart. Across the whole year the figure is closer to three in five.
Two things push Taurus up. The first is the sky: in late April and May, the day is long, so the Sun spends more hours up than down. The second is the hospital clock: just over half of US babies are born between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Put the two together, and the day rooms of your chart fill up.
This guide looks at the Sun in Taurus as a placement. The sign gives the tone. The house tells you where in life that tone plays out, and the house depends on your hour of birth. Here are the odds for each house, the clock times for three US cities, and what the old and new books say about each room.
The sign sets the tone, the house sets the stage
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. The Sun in that map stands for the core of you: the self you grow into, and the place where you want to shine.
The sign is the Sun’s color. Taurus is an earth sign, tied to the body, the senses and what lasts. It is also a fixed sign, which means it holds rather than starts. Venus rules it. This page does something else. It asks where the Taurus Sun sits in your chart. Every Taurus born on the same day shares the same sign. They do not share the same house. A Taurus born at 9 a.m. and a Taurus born at 9 p.m. have the Sun in two very different rooms.
Gender changes nothing in the chart itself, but it changes what people expect: see what that means for the Taurus woman and her habit of going quiet.
What the tradition says about the Sun in Taurus
The old books give each planet ranks in the signs. A planet can be at home, honored, weak or out of place. These ranks are called dignities. The Sun has its home in Leo. It is honored, or exalted, at 19 degrees of Aries, in the sign just before Taurus. Ptolemy gives that degree in the Tetrabiblos, and William Lilly repeats it in Christian Astrology in 1647.
By the time the Sun enters Taurus, it has left that high point about eleven days behind. It is not weak in Taurus either. Its weak signs are Aquarius, facing Leo, and Libra, facing Aries.
So what rank does the Sun hold in Taurus? None. Lilly lists five kinds of rank, from the whole sign down to small slices of a few degrees. The Sun holds not one of them anywhere in Taurus. Lilly calls such a planet peregrine, a word that means a traveler far from home. That is a plain fact of the tables, not a flaw. A traveler takes its cue from its host.
The hosts in Taurus are Venus and the Moon. Venus owns the sign. The Moon is exalted here, at 3 degrees. Ptolemy also gives the earth signs two joint rulers: Venus by day and the Moon by night. So the Sun in Taurus works through Venus and the Moon. Look at where those two sit in your chart. Their houses and signs color how your Sun shows itself.
The Sun in Taurus builds worth over time, while the Moon in Taurus needs that worth to feel safe today.
Why the long days of May matter
The houses are fixed to the ground under your feet, not to the stars. The line where the sky meets the earth splits the chart in two. The 7th to the 12th houses are above that line. The 1st to the 6th houses are below it, in the sky you cannot see.
So the house of your Sun is a matter of the clock. At sunrise the Sun crosses into the 12th house. At noon by the Sun it is near the top of the chart. At sunset it drops into the 6th house. In the night it passes under the earth, through the 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st houses, and then it comes up again.
Now add the season. In Taurus season, the Sun is up for about 13 hours and 40 minutes a day, on average, where most Americans live. In Scorpio season, six months later, it is up for only about 10 hours and 15 minutes. We weighted each place by the number of people who live there.
So even on an even clock, where a baby is just as likely to arrive at 3 a.m. as at 3 p.m., a Taurus Sun is up 57.2 percent of the time. A Scorpio Sun is up only 42.8 percent of the time. That gap comes from the sky alone.
Then the hospital clock tips the scale
Babies are not born on an even clock. The CDC natality file for 2024 gives the minute of birth for 3,638,436 US babies. The slowest hour is 4 a.m. The busiest is 8 a.m., when planned C-sections start. Induced births, where labor is started with medicine, add many more from midday to late afternoon.
We laid those real hours over every Taurus day from 1940 to 2030. The share of Taurus Suns above the horizon rises from 57.2 percent to 65.7 percent. That is close to two in three.

Read the table from left to right. The long days add about seven points to Taurus. The hospital hours add eight or nine more. We ran the same count for all twelve signs. Taurus ranks third. Only Gemini and Cancer, the signs of the longest days, score higher, at about 68 percent. Sagittarius and Capricorn come last, at about 49 percent.
In Greek astrology, a birth with the Sun above the horizon is a day chart, and one with the Sun below is a night chart. The Greeks called this split sect. Chris Brennan, in Hellenistic Astrology (2017), puts sect first in any reading, because it decides which planets help most. So here is the thesis in Greek terms: about two Taurus births in three are day charts.
There is a twist. Venus, the ruler of Taurus, belongs to the night team. So in most Taurus charts, the sign’s own ruler works for the other side. Our Taurus page explains why Venus holds Taurus as her night sign.
Which house holds a Taurus Sun
There are two common ways to cut the sky into twelve houses. Placidus houses cut it by time: the Sun’s day arc is split into six equal parts, and so is its night arc. Most US apps use Placidus. Whole sign houses are the oldest way: the sign rising in the east is the whole 1st house, the next sign is the 2nd, and so on.

Three points stand out. First, the top three houses under Placidus are the 11th, the 10th and the 9th. Each holds about one Taurus Sun in eight. Those are the late morning and early afternoon rooms.
Second, the 1st house is the rarest. It holds about one Taurus Sun in twenty. That room is the last stretch of night before sunrise, and in May those hours are both short and quiet on the ward.
Third, whole sign houses push the peak to the 10th house, at 13.3 percent, and leave the 2nd and 3rd houses almost empty. The reason is the rising sign. Some signs rise fast and some rise slowly. At 40 degrees north, Aries and Pisces each clear the horizon in about 72 minutes. Leo takes about 152 minutes. A Taurus Sun is in the whole sign 10th house when Leo is rising, near midday. It is in the 2nd or 3rd house when Aries or Pisces is rising, in the small hours. Slow signs hold the door open longer, so their houses fill up.

What clock time gives each house

Look at the length of each window. On this date, a day house lasts about two hours and twenty minutes. A night house lasts only one hour and forty minutes. That is the long May day at work.
Now look at 8 a.m. That is the peak hour for planned C-sections. In New York on May 5, a baby born at 8:10 a.m. has the Sun in the 12th house. At 8:20 a.m., it is in the 11th. Across all US Taurus births at 8 a.m., the split is almost even: 51 percent in the 11th house and 49 percent in the 12th. If you were born near a boundary, check the exact minute on your long form birth record.
Clock time is not Sun time. Your time zone is wide, and the Sun comes up later the farther west you live in it. That is why Chicago runs ahead of New York in the table, even though both clocks read the same hour.
Your Taurus Sun, room by room
Here is how the tradition reads a Taurus Sun in each group of houses. We give these readings as the books give them, not as a forecast. The 9th, 10th and 11th houses: about one in three

The 11th house is friends, groups and hopes. A Taurus Sun here is the friend who keeps the group together for years. The 9th house is travel, study and belief. The 7th, 8th and 12th houses: the edges of the day
The 12th house is the first room above the horizon at dawn. It covers what is hidden, rest and retreat. Liz Greene reads the Sun as the hero’s road, the self you grow into over a life. In the 12th, that road runs through private work and quiet care.
The 8th and 7th houses are the late afternoon and the sunset. The 7th is partners and open rivals. The 8th is shared money, debt and what others leave you. For a sign ruled by Venus, and so tied to value and worth, these two rooms point the Taurus need for security at other people.
The 1st to the 6th houses: the night third
About one Taurus Sun in three is born at night. The 1st house is the self and the body, the front door of the chart. The 2nd house is your own money and goods, a room that fits Taurus well. The 3rd is siblings and short trips. The 4th is home and family roots. The 5th is children, play and pleasure. The 6th is daily work and health.
Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols (1981), reads the house of a planet as the field where it acts. In Greek terms, a Sun below the horizon is out of sect: the night belongs to the Moon, and the Sun plays second. Demetra George, who helped bring the Greek texts back, gives the Moon a larger voice in such charts. A night-born Taurus Sun shines more in private than in public.
A Taurus birthday is a quiet one on the ward
Here is a smaller fact from the same CDC file. In 2024, the US saw about 9,941 births a day on average. Taurus season fell on a quieter stretch. Once we evened out the days of the week, the April and May days of Taurus season saw about 9,660 births a day. That is about 3 percent below the yearly average.
A simpler check with plain monthly totals gives about 2 percent below. The two methods differ because April and May 2024 had an uneven mix of weekdays and weekends. The busiest month was August, at about 10,500 births a day. The quietest was January.
So Taurus Suns made up about 8.1 to 8.2 percent of US births in 2024, a little less than the 8.5 percent of the year the Sun spends in Taurus. This is one year of data. It tells you about US hospitals, not about the sign.

How to find your own Taurus Sun house
First, find a birth time you can trust. The time on your long form birth certificate beats a family memory. A half hour of error can move the Sun one room.
Second, know which house system your app uses. On May 5, 2026, in New York, a baby born at 9 a.m. has the Sun in the 11th house under Placidus. Under whole sign houses, the answer depends on the rising sign. For US Taurus Suns, the two systems give the same house only 44 percent of the time.
Third, note whether you are a day or a night birth. If the Sun had risen when you were born, you have a day chart. For about two Taurus births in three, that is the case.

How we counted
We want you to be able to check this, so here is the full method. It is the same setup as our Sun in the houses guides.
Places: every US county, placed at its 2020 center of people from the Census Bureau and weighted by its head count, grouped into 303 cells with their own time zones.
Dates: every day from January 1, 1940 to December 31, 2030. We turned each clock time into world time with the official rules, war time and summer time included.
Birth hours: the CDC natality file for 2024, split by month, day of the week and minute of birth. We used the 2024 pattern for every year. Births in the 1970s had far fewer planned C-sections, so for older readers the true share sits between the even clock value and the 2024 value.
Route one: a full grid. For every day, every one of the 303 places and every minute of the clock, we placed the Sun with our own formulas. Then we set its Placidus house from its place on its day or night arc, and its whole sign house from the rising sign. We kept the minutes with the Sun in Taurus and weighted each by the real births for that month, weekday and minute. This gave 65.7 percent above the horizon with real hours and 57.2 percent on an even clock.
Route two: one million charts drawn at random with a fixed seed. Each one was built with the Swiss Ephemeris and its own Placidus house position. The 909,313 charts with the Sun in Taurus gave 65.7 percent above the horizon, give or take 0.05. A second draw with a new seed gave 65.6 percent. The even clock gave 57.3 percent. Every house in the big table agrees across the two routes within a fifth of a point.
Day length is the time the center of the Sun spends above a flat horizon, from the same formulas, weighted by population. The clock table comes from the Swiss Ephemeris, minute by minute.
