Two thousand years ago, the 6th house was the worst address in the chart. The Greeks named it Bad Fortune. Today the same slice of sky is where apps put your step count, your sleep score and your to-do list. Nothing moved in the sky. The meaning moved.
That reversal is the real story of 6th house astrology, and it explains why two websites can describe this house in opposite terms and both be quoting a source. Here is what the house covers, who changed its job description, and what sixty years of computed US births say about how common it is to have planets there.

What does the 6th house rule?
Think of a birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life. The planets are the furniture. The 6th room holds the parts of life that repeat.
Six things live in this room, and astrologers have agreed on most of them since antiquity:

- Daily routine. What you do on a plain Tuesday. Sleep, meals, the walk to the bus.
- Work, not career. The tasks, the shift, the inbox. Your job title and public standing sit in the 10th house instead.
- Coworkers and staff. The people you work beside or manage, not the people you love.
- The body and its upkeep. Diet, exercise, rest, hygiene.
- Illness. This is the old meaning, and it needs care. More on it below.
- Small animals. Goats and hens in the old texts, cats and dogs in modern ones.
One line sums the room up: the 6th house is where life is repeated rather than announced.
Bad Fortune: what the Greek astrologers wrote
Western astrology as we know it starts with Greek-speaking writers in Egypt, from roughly 100 BC to 600 AD. Scholars call this the Hellenistic tradition. Those writers gave each of the twelve rooms a name.
The 6th room was called Kakè Tychè. It means Bad Fortune.
Vettius Valens, a working astrologer of the 2nd century AD, listed its topics in his Anthologies: illness, injury, slaves, and hard labour. Claudius Ptolemy, writing his Tetrabiblos in the same century, treated the same zone as the place where the body breaks down. Neither man saw a wellness hub.

Two structural reasons sat behind that harsh label.
The first is geometry. The Greeks read the chart through aspects, which are the set angles between two rooms. Rooms that sit at 60, 90, 120 or 180 degrees from the 1st house can see it. The 6th sits at 150 degrees. That angle is on nobody’s list. So the 6th house cannot see the room that stands for you. What happens there happens without your consent, and that is the ancient definition of misfortune.
The second reason is Mars. Each planet in the old system had a room it enjoyed, called its joy. Mars, the planet of cutting, fever and conflict, had its joy in the 6th. A house whose resident planet is the war planet does not get a soft name.

The Moon in the 6th house sits in that room of Mars, and it means the Moon had set in the west within about two hours of the birth.
By 1647 the label had not softened. William Lilly, the English astrologer whose Christian Astrology taught the craft to the English-speaking world, gave the 6th house sickness, servants and cattle, and called it an unfortunate house.
How Bad Fortune became a habit tracker
The shift happened in the 20th century, and it was deliberate.
Psychological astrology, led by Liz Greene from the 1970s, re-read every house as a part of the self rather than a forecast of events. Under that lens, illness stops being a verdict and becomes a signal about how a person lives. Robert Hand, whose Horoscope Symbols shaped a generation of American astrologers, framed the 6th as the house of adjustment: the place where you fine-tune the machine.
Routine is also a site of revolt, and Black Moon Lilith in the sixth house marks the working conditions a person will not accept quietly.
Two later writers pushed back on the erasure. Demetra George and Chris Brennan both argue that the old meaning should be taught, not buried, because a house stripped of its difficulty loses its use. Their position is worth holding in mind. The modern reading is kinder. The ancient reading is sharper.
Both readings survive online, which is why your search results contradict each other.
We computed sixty years of births. Here is how common a 6th house really is
Every guide to this house describes what planets there mean. None of them says how often it happens. So we counted.
The method, stated plainly so you can repeat it. We counted every day of births in the US from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2009, weighted by where people live (303 towns and cities) and by the real hours babies are born, from CDC birth records for 2024. For each moment and place we computed the rising sign and the sign of all ten bodies, Sun to Pluto, in the whole sign house system, where each room is exactly one sign. That is the system the Greek writers used. A second, independent engine gave the same figures: the Swiss Ephemeris and the open-source astronomy-engine library agree to within a twentieth of a point.
The results:
- 51.9% of charts have at least one planet in the 6th house.
- 48.1% have an empty 6th house.
- 31.8% have exactly one planet there, 13.6% have two.
- 6.5% have three or more, which astrologers call a stellium: a cluster.
So an empty 6th house is close to a coin flip. It is not rare, it is not a flaw, and it does not mean you have no daily life. It means the story of your routine gets told by the sign on the room and by the planet that rules that sign, rather than by a tenant inside.
The second number surprised us more. We counted which planet turns up in the 6th house most. Pure chance gives each one a share of one in twelve, 8.33%. The Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus sit on or near that line, between 8.1% and 8.3%. The Sun sits a little below it, at 7.7%, with Mercury, Venus and Mars close by at 7.8%. That dip comes from the clock, not from the house. A Sun in the 6th means a birth in the evening, in the hours after sunset, and fewer US babies are born then than in the morning. Count every hour the same and the Sun climbs back to about 8.3%. The two slowest bodies stray for another reason, Neptune up to 9.3% and Pluto down to 7.1%. That is a birth-year effect: everyone born in the same decade shares their sign, and some signs rise more often than others over US towns. No planet is drawn to this house, and any article that tells you a placement there is unusual is describing a feeling, not a frequency.
One check on our own numbers. Babies are not born evenly around the clock, which is why we weight each hour by real US birth times. We ran the count again with every clock time counting the same. The empty rate moved from 48.1% to 47.2%. Under one point. The figure holds.
Why this house needs your birth time and your birth city
Here is the part that trips up most readers, and it is the reason so many people get a wrong answer online.
Your Sun sign needs only a date. Your houses need three things: date, exact clock time, and the city. Without all three, no one can tell you what your 6th house is. Not an app, not an astrologer.
The cause is the Earth’s rotation. The twelve rooms are anchored to the rising sign, which is the sign climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you drew breath. That point moves through the whole zodiac in 24 hours. It changes sign roughly every two hours, about 2 hours 20 minutes in a typical US chart, and the speed depends on the sign and on how far north or south you were born.
The practical consequence: a birth time wrong by two hours usually moves the whole chart by one room. Even half an hour of doubt, earlier or later, changes the rising sign in half of US charts. Your 6th house becomes your 5th or your 7th. Every reading built on it collapses. A guessed time of noon, the default many free sites use, is a guess about the rooms, not a calculation.
If your birth certificate carries a time, use it. If it does not, treat any house reading as provisional and say so.
The sign on the 6th house is set by the same calculation. Virgo has no special claim on your chart. Virgo is linked to this house because it sits sixth in the zodiac order, so a person born with Aries rising gets Virgo on the 6th. Everyone else gets something else. That link is a teaching device, not a fact about your chart.
Health in the 6th house: the tradition, and its limits
This is where the 6th house earns both its fame and its trouble.
The historical record is not in doubt. Renaissance physicians read charts. Lilly’s 1647 manual devotes long passages to judging sickness from the 6th house, and English doctors of that era were licensed partly on their knowledge of the practice. Each sign was mapped to a body zone, from Aries at the head down to Pisces at the feet. That mapping is the field now called medical astrology, and we cover it in its own guide.
What follows matters more than any of the above.
A birth chart does not detect, predict or explain illness. The 17th-century practice belongs to the history of medicine, alongside bloodletting and the four humours, and it was abandoned for the same reason: it did not work. Astrology is not a science, and no placement in your 6th house carries information about your body.

Career is the 10th house: your title, your standing, what strangers know you for. The 6th house is the work itself. The 40 hours. The colleague at the next desk. The system you build so the 40 hours do not eat you.
A person with a heavy 6th house is a person whose life is shaped by process. That is a gift in a hospital, a kitchen, a workshop, a lab, an editing suite. It turns punishing in a job with no structure at all, where the same instinct finds nothing to organise and starts organising the person instead. Perfectionism is the failure mode of this house, and it was the failure mode the Greeks were pointing at with the word toil.
The animals are not a joke. Valens and Lilly both list livestock here, because a farm animal is a daily obligation that cannot be postponed. The modern equivalent walks on four legs and needs feeding at seven. The category held; only the species changed.
Dated transits you can check
A transit is a planet’s live position today, measured against the chart you were born with. When a planet crosses your 6th house, the tradition reads it as a season for that room’s business.
Three dates you can verify against any ephemeris:
- Mercury, the planet linked to this house through Virgo, turns retrograde on 24 October 2026 at 20°59′ Scorpio and returns to direct motion on 13 November 2026. Retrograde means a planet appears to move backwards from where we stand on Earth, an optical effect of two planets on two tracks.
- The next Mercury retrograde runs from 9 February to 3 March 2027, from 5°59′ Pisces back to 20°55′ Aquarius.
- Saturn, the planet of structure and limits, enters Taurus on 13 April 2028 and Gemini on 1 June 2030. Whichever room holds those signs in your chart gets a multi-year lesson in discipline.
If Scorpio sits on your 6th house, the October 2026 retrograde falls in the room of your routine. The tradition reads that as a month to repair systems rather than launch them.

Cast a birth chart with your date, exact clock time and city. Find your rising sign. Count six signs forward from it in zodiac order. That sign is your 6th house in the whole sign system.
Is an empty 6th house bad?
No. Our count of US births from 1950 to 2009, with real birth hours, puts the empty rate at 48.1%, close to half the population. Read the sign on the house and the ruler of that sign instead.
