Two people search for “Jupiter in Leo” on the same day. They want opposite things.
The first was born with Jupiter in Leo. It sits in her birth chart, fixed for life. The second just read that Jupiter moved into Leo in 2026. He wants to know what the next year holds.
Both queries look the same. The answers are not. This mix-up is the single biggest source of bad reading on this topic, so we will split the two from the start and keep them apart.
The two questions behind one phrase
Jupiter is the largest planet in our system. It takes close to twelve years to walk the whole circle of signs. That single fact creates both meanings.
Because it spends about a year in each sign, everyone born in one stretch of months shares the same Jupiter sign. Your Jupiter in Leo is a birth mark. It never moves.
And because it comes back to Leo every twelve years, Jupiter also passes through Leo as a moving event. Sky watchers call this a transit: a planet crossing a patch of sky right now, live, for all of us at once. That is what people mean when they ask about 2026.
So: born with it, or living through it. One is yours alone. The other is shared by the whole world. If you want the wider frame first, our guide to the planet Jupiter lays out what this body stands for in any sign.
The exact dates, worked out from the sky
Almost no page on this topic gives you a date. We ran the numbers ourselves.
Here is the method, so you can check it. We used the astronomy-engine library, which rebuilds planet paths from the same physics that guides spacecraft. For each day from 1949 to 2042 we asked for Jupiter’s spot on the zodiac ring, seen from Earth, in the tropical zodiac. Tropical means the ring starts at the spring equinox, the moment when day and night match in March. That is the ring used across the West. Leo runs from 120 to 150 degrees on it. Then we split each day in half again and again, sixty times over, to pin the border crossing to the minute.
These are the results.
| Jupiter enters Leo | Jupiter leaves Leo | Days in Leo |
|---|---|---|
| 13 June 1955 | 7 July 1956 | 328 |
| 27 September 1966 | 15 June 1968 | 369 |
| 5 September 1978 | 29 September 1979 | 338 |
| 18 August 1990 | 12 September 1991 | 390 |
| 1 August 2002 | 27 August 2003 | 391 |
| 16 July 2014 | 11 August 2015 | 391 |
| 30 June 2026 | 26 July 2027 | 391 |
| 12 June 2038 | 8 July 2039 | 330 |
To the minute, for the live one: Jupiter crossed into Leo on 30 June 2026 at 05:52 UTC. It leaves for Virgo on 26 July 2027 at 04:49 UTC. The last pass ran from 16 July 2014, 10:31 UTC, to 11 August 2015, 11:12 UTC. We checked these four minutes against JPL Horizons, the NASA service that tracks the planets.
For babies born during this pass, our page on Jupiter in the 3rd house gives the clock times when Jupiter sits in that room, in Seattle and in Miami.
Find your birth date in that table. If it falls inside a row, you have Jupiter in Leo in your chart. If it falls near a border, get a real chart drawn: a single day can flip the answer.
Why “about a year” is not a year
You will read everywhere that Jupiter stays one year per sign. Our own count says the stay ranged from 328 to 391 days in the cycles we measured. The mean was 378 days. That is a spread of two whole months.
The gap has a cause, and it is worth knowing. From where we stand, planets sometimes appear to slide backwards along the zodiac. That is what retrograde means. Nothing reverses in space. Earth is on the inside track and overtakes Jupiter, the way a fast train seems to push a slow one backwards.
When a border crossing lands near one of those backward stretches, Jupiter can step into Leo, back out, and step in again.
The 1966 cycle is the extreme case. Jupiter reached Leo on 27 September 1966, slid back into Cancer on 16 January 1967, returned to Leo on 23 May 1967, moved on to Virgo that October, dipped back into Leo in late February 1968, and left for good on 15 June 1968. The window spans 627 days. The real time inside Leo was 369 days. Anyone born in early 1967 has Jupiter in Cancer, not Leo, even though the whole span looks like a Leo stretch on a rough chart.
The 2026 pass has no such wobble. It is one clean run of 391 days.
We also measured the loop itself. The gap between one Leo entry and the next came out at 11.95 years, five cycles in a row. That is the real figure behind the round “twelve years” you hear.
How common is Jupiter in Leo?
People ask if this is a rare mark. Here is a plain count.
We took every day from 1 January 1950 to 1 January 2010 and asked whether Jupiter sat in Leo. It did on 1,816 days out of 21,915. That is 8.29 percent. Roughly one birth chart in twelve.
The method is blunt on purpose: births are close to even across the year, so counting days is a fair stand-in for counting people. It is a floor, not a rare gift. What makes your Jupiter yours is not the sign alone. It is the house it lands in and the angles it makes to your Sun and Moon.
Leo belongs to the Sun, and Jupiter is a guest
Every sign has an owner in this craft. Leo’s owner is the Sun. That single fact shapes the whole reading.
Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces. It is lifted up in Cancer, weak in Gemini and Virgo, and at its low point in Capricorn. In Leo it holds none of those ranks. Jupiter in Leo is a guest in the Sun’s house.
That sounds like a demotion. It is not, and the oldest text on the subject says why.
In the second century, the Greek writer Ptolemy set out the rules of this craft in a book called the Tetrabiblos, and it is still the base text of the Western tradition. Ptolemy sorts the twelve signs into four groups of three by element. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius form the fire group. Each group gets rulers by time of day. For fire, Ptolemy names the Sun by day and Jupiter by night.
So Jupiter is not a stranger in Leo. It is the night steward of Leo’s own element. It has no title there, but it has standing. The right image is not an intruder. It is a trusted friend of the family who holds a key.
That is the whole flavour of the placement. Jupiter here works through the Sun’s business: pride, display, warmth, the wish to be seen doing something worth seeing. If you want the Sun’s own version of that, read our guide to the Leo sign next.
What the tradition actually says
Sources beat opinions, so here is who said what.
Vettius Valens, a Greek writer of the second century whose Anthologies is the largest surviving casebook from the ancient world, treats Jupiter as the giver of rank, trust and good name. Placed with the Sun’s own sign, that gift points at public standing rather than quiet wealth.
In 1647 the English writer William Lilly published Christian Astrology, the first big work on the subject in English. Lilly ties Jupiter to judges, teachers and priests, and Leo to kings and to the heart. Put together, you get the person others trust to speak in front of the room.
Modern writers keep the core and change the register. Liz Greene, who trained as a Jungian analyst, reads Jupiter as the drive to find meaning, and in Leo that search runs through the self rather than around it. Robert Hand, in his work on transits, warns that Jupiter enlarges whatever it touches, faults included. In Leo the fault on offer is self-regard.
Demetra George and Chris Brennan, who both brought the Greek sources back into working use, stress a point that matters here: Jupiter and the Sun share the same sect. Sect is the split between day charts and night charts, and it decides how kindly a planet behaves. Jupiter is a day planet. So is the Sun. If you were born in daylight with Jupiter in Leo, the placement runs at its best. Born at night, it still works, but louder and less carefully.
Check your birth time before you take that further. It is the one detail most people get wrong.
Born with Jupiter in Leo
Strip the poetry and you get a simple claim. Growth arrives through being seen.
People with this mark learn by doing things in public. They get better on a stage, in a classroom, in front of a camera, at the head of a table. Praise is not vanity for them; it is fuel and it is feedback. Take the audience away and the growth stalls.
The gift is warmth with reach. These are the people who back a friend loudly, who make a room feel bigger, who give away credit and money with an open hand. Lilly’s link between Jupiter and the teacher fits: they explain things well because they enjoy the act of explaining.
The cost is the same trait turned up. Jupiter makes things bigger. A big need to be seen becomes a need to be central. Generous becomes showy. Sure becomes deaf. Hand’s warning lands here with force.
The house holds the detail. Houses split the chart into twelve life areas. Picture your chart as a house with twelve rooms: one for money, one for work, one for love, and so on. The sign says how Jupiter behaves. The room says where it does it. Jupiter in Leo in the room of work builds a name at the job. In the room of home, it builds a household people gather in.
Born between July 2026 and July 2027? Our guide to Jupiter in the 1st house gives the New York clock times when a baby gets Jupiter at the front door.
The neighbours matter too. Jupiter in Leo close to a hard Saturn reads very differently from Jupiter in Leo alone.
Living through the 2026 to 2027 transit
Now the other reader. Jupiter is in Leo from 30 June 2026 to 26 July 2027. This one belongs to everybody.
A transit does not act on the world at large. It acts on your chart. Jupiter spends those 391 days inside one room of your twelve. Which room decides everything, and it depends on your rising sign, which depends on your birth time. Our guide to planetary transits walks through how to find it.
Three anchors make this concrete.
First, look back at 16 July 2014 to 11 August 2015. Jupiter was in the same room of your chart then. What grew in that stretch? What got bigger, better known, more crowded? The same room is lit again. That is the cleanest forecast you will get, because it is your own record.
Second, if you were born under one of the earlier rows in the table, 2026 and 2027 bring your Jupiter return: the planet lands back on the exact spot it held at your birth. It happens near ages twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six, forty-eight, sixty, seventy-two and eighty-four. People born between July 2014 and August 2015 get their first one. People born in the 2002 pass get their second.
Third, mark the exit. On 26 July 2027 Jupiter moves to Virgo, and Virgo asks for detail, craft and repair. If Leo’s year hands you a wider stage, the following year asks you to make the work hold up. Our page on Jupiter in Virgo covers that shift.
What to do with this
Three steps, in order.
Find your birth date in the table and settle whether this is a birth mark or a passing event. Get your birth time to the nearest few minutes, because it fixes the room and the sect. Then compare 2014 and 2015 with what you want from 2026 and 2027.
Nothing here is a promise. Jupiter widens the door. Walking through it is your job.
Questions people ask
When does Jupiter enter Leo in 2026?
On 30 June 2026 at 05:52 UTC, by our own count from the sky, checked against NASA’s JPL Horizons. It stays until 26 July 2027 at 04:49 UTC.
How long will Jupiter stay in Leo in 2026?
391 days, with no backward step out of the sign. Across the cycles we measured, the stay ran from 328 to 391 days, so this is one of the longer ones.
In which years was Jupiter in Leo?
1955 to 1956, 1966 to 1968, 1978 to 1979, 1990 to 1991, 2002 to 2003, 2014 to 2015, and 2026 to 2027. The next pass starts on 12 June 2038.
Is Jupiter in Leo lucky?
It carries no formal rank in Leo. Ptolemy still names Jupiter the night ruler of the fire group, which includes Leo, so it has real standing there. Whether that reads as luck depends on the house it sits in and on your birth time.
What was the last time Jupiter was in Leo?
From 16 July 2014 to 11 August 2015. Look at what grew for you then. The same area of your chart is active again.
When is my Jupiter return?
Every 11.95 years by our measure, so near ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and 84. If you were born with Jupiter in Leo, yours falls inside the 2026 to 2027 window.
Does Jupiter in Leo mean I will be famous?
No. It means growth comes through being seen, on whatever scale your life runs at. That can be a stage or a staff room.
