Gemini and Aquarius compatibility has a date that no other pair can claim in the same way. Valentine’s Day, February 14, falls in Aquarius every year. And US birth records show that more babies are born on that day than on the days around it. We counted about 5 percent more, in each of the 15 years of our main file.
This page puts that count next to three others. About one random US couple in 74 is a Gemini and an Aquarius. The two Suns form a true trine, within 6 degrees, in only about one pair in three. And a baby born on Valentine’s Day has its exact trine match in a Gemini born around June 16. Read all of it as a lens, not a forecast.

First, what no one can promise
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. So this page gives the pair no score. It uses the old symbols as a way to talk about two styles of life.
Your Sun sign is the slice of sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Gemini runs from about May 21 to June 20. Aquarius runs from about January 20 to February 18. The exact hour shifts a little each year, as our guide to the zodiac signs shows.
The biggest test of love signs we know of was run by David Voas, a British social scientist, in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held the birth dates of about 10.3 million married couples. He found no sign pair that married more than chance would allow. The Skeptical Inquirer ran the result in March 2008.
His raw count showed too many couples with the same sign. He traced them to errors on the forms. So he built a clean table of about 9.5 million couples, his Table 7. We read the two Gemini and Aquarius cells there.

The gap is about 100 couples out of 137,000. Voas wrote that a cell in a table this big can drift by 450 couples with no cause at all. So the pair married at the rate chance predicts. The signs did not pull them together, and they did not push them apart.
How common is a Gemini and Aquarius couple?
The signs are not the same size in the birth count. We use one reference for all our pair pages. It holds 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014, counted day by day. In that count, 8.56 percent of babies are Gemini. Only 7.93 percent are Aquarius.
Now pair two people at random. The couple can be a Gemini woman with an Aquarius man, or the reverse. Both count. So the chance is two times 8.56 percent times 7.93 percent. That gives 1.36 percent, or about 1 couple in 74.

So Gemini and Aquarius rank 40th of the 66 mixed pairs. Gemini pulls the pair up. It is the fourth most common Sun sign in US births. Aquarius pulls it down. It is the second rarest, ahead of only Capricorn. The Sun moves fast in winter, when Earth is closest to it, so the Aquarius season is short. Births dip in winter too.
Valentine’s Day: the one Aquarius birthday with extra babies
Here is the count that sets this pair apart. Every February 14 falls in Aquarius. The Sun sits between 25 and 26 degrees of the sign that day. And the US birth files show a bump on that exact date.
Births change a lot by day of the week. Many births are planned, and hospitals plan fewer of them on weekends. So a fair test compares a date with the same weekday one week before and one week after. We did that for each year.

The days on each side barely move. The bump sits on the 14th itself. In the Social Security file, it comes to about 530 extra babies each year. About 1 Aquarius in 27 is born on Valentine’s Day. An even spread over the sign would give about 1 in 30.
We are not the first to see it. A team at Yale, led by Becca Levy, looked at US birth records in 2011. They found 3.6 percent more natural births on Valentine’s Day, and 12.1 percent more C-sections. They found the reverse on Halloween. Our own count of October 31 shows 12 percent fewer births than the same weekday a week away.
So what does this say about love? Nothing about the stars. It says something about people. Parents and doctors pick dates, and a day with a happy meaning draws more of them. The bump is a human choice that lands in Aquarius, not a sign that makes people fall in love. But it is a fact, and it is on the calendar of every Aquarius.
The Gemini side: Memorial Day, the deepest dip
Gemini has a holiday of its own, and it pulls the other way. Memorial Day is the last Monday in May. It always falls between May 25 and May 31. The Sun enters Gemini by May 21 at the latest. So Memorial Day is a Gemini birthday in every year.
On that Monday, US births drop hard. In the Social Security file, they fell about 35 percent below the Mondays one week before and one week after. The drop showed up in all 15 years. The Health Statistics file gives a drop of about 29 percent. Few planned births take place on a federal holiday.
Put the two dates side by side. The Aquarius partner’s season holds a day that draws extra births. The Gemini partner’s season holds a day that loses a third of them. Our page on the Cancer and Sagittarius pair and its July 4 and Thanksgiving births counts two more holidays like this.
Four signs apart: the trine, and how many pairs truly have it
Count along the zodiac from Aquarius. Pisces is one step on, then Aries, then Taurus, then Gemini. Four signs apart means 120 degrees on the circle, a third of the way around. Astrologers call that angle a trine. They read it as ease. Both signs are air signs, and a trine joins signs of the same element.
An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. Most chart readers count it only when the angle is close to exact. The leeway they allow is called the orb. A sign is 30 degrees wide, so two Suns in these signs can sit anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. We asked what share of random US pairs land close to 120 degrees.

With a 6 degree orb, about one pair in three has a real Sun trine. The rest share the label, not the angle. These shares are the same for any two signs four apart. The width of a sign sets them. Our page on Libra and Aquarius, the third air pair, found the same numbers.
A Valentine baby’s exact match is born around June 16
For the trine to be exact, both Suns must sit at the same degree of their signs. On February 14, the Sun sits near 26 degrees of Aquarius. It reaches 26 degrees of Gemini about 122 and a half days later. That lands late on June 16 or early on June 17, by US time zone.
The gap is nearly the same for every degree. From one degree of Aquarius to the same degree of Gemini, the Sun takes between 121 and 122.7 days. Going the other way, from Gemini on to Aquarius, it takes about 243 to 244 days. Here are a few matched birthdays. Each pair has Suns close to 120 degrees apart.

So a Gemini born near Memorial Day and an Aquarius born in late January have the exact angle. A Gemini born on June 20 and an Aquarius born on January 20 sit close to 150 degrees apart. That is wider than any trine orb. If you want to use the angle, look up both birth dates and find the real degrees.
Each partner’s ruler leads the air signs
Every sign has a ruler, a planet that owns it the way a host owns a house. Mercury rules Gemini. In the old system, Saturn rules Aquarius. Modern astrologers give Aquarius to Uranus as well, a planet found in 1781. Our Aquarius sign page explains why the old ruler still counts.
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. We read it in the Robbins English version of 1940. In Book 1, chapter 18, he sorts the signs into four triangles, one for each element. He gives the air triangle, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night.
Those are the same two planets that rule the partners’ signs. So in this pair, each partner’s ruler is also one of the two lords of their shared element. Only one other pair of signs has this, Leo and Sagittarius, as our page on the pair ruled by the two lords of fire sets out. Libra, the third air sign, is ruled by Venus, which has no share in the air triangle.
The tradition reads the two rulers as two sides of the mind. Mercury is quick, curious and fond of words. Saturn is slow, firm and fond of rules. So the picture is one partner who asks many questions, and one who holds a view for a long time. Both are ways of thinking, and in the old picture they share the same ground.
Does Gemini command Aquarius?
Ptolemy has one more label for this pair. In chapter 14, he calls some signs “commanding” and others “obeying.” Two such signs sit the same distance from an equinox sign, and he says they rise in equal time. The sign on the summer side commands, because the Sun makes the day longer there. The Robbins notes list the pairs by whole signs. Gemini commands Aquarius in that list.
We put the claim to the test. The Earth turns once a day, so each sign climbs over the eastern horizon in turn. The sign rising at your birth is your rising sign. But the signs do not rise at the same pace. We worked out the rising time of each sign in three US cities.

So the two signs do not rise in equal time. Gemini takes about a third longer in New York. The reason is that Ptolemy’s rule works degree by degree. Gemini mirrors Capricorn across the equinox, and the two rise in the same 1 hour 54 minutes. Aquarius mirrors Taurus, and both rise in 1 hour 26 minutes.
So the “command” tie holds only in the whole sign reading. In the degree reading, William Lilly’s Christian Astrology of 1647 calls such mirror points contra-antiscia. There, no point of Gemini mirrors a point of Aquarius. Both readings agree on one thing. The two signs do not “behold” each other either. Where each partner’s Mercury and Venus can sit
Mercury and Venus orbit closer to the Sun than Earth does. From here, Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, and Venus never more than about 47. Those limits box in each partner’s chart.
A Gemini’s Mercury can only be in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. An Aquarius’s Mercury can only be in Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces. The two lists never meet. So the two partners never share a Mercury sign, the placement astrologers read as how a person thinks and talks. For a pair known for good talk, that is worth a pause. The ease the books promise comes from the shared element, not from a shared style of speech.
Venus has more room. A Gemini’s Venus can sit in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo. An Aquarius’s Venus can sit in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries. How the pair can play out day to day
Here the language turns from counts to tradition. What follows is how astrologers read the two signs. It is a set of images to test against your own life, not a set of facts.
What each partner brings
Gemini is a mutable air sign. Air means ideas, talk and links between people. Mutable means it closes a season and likes to change course. A Gemini partner shows care through talk, jokes and fresh plans. They want to know what you think, and then what you think about that.
Aquarius is a fixed air sign. Fixed means it sits in the middle of a season and holds a course. An Aquarius partner shows care through loyalty and honest views. They want a partner who is a friend first. They care about the group, the cause and the long view.
Where they meet
Both signs like to think a thing through before they feel their way into it. Both need room to move. Neither wants a partner who checks in every hour. Gemini brings speed and play. Aquarius brings a steady aim. In the old picture, Mercury and Saturn share the air triangle, so the pair shares a way of seeing the world.
Where they rub
Gemini changes its mind. Aquarius holds its mind. When Gemini wants to try a new plan, Aquarius can hear a lack of spine. When Aquarius will not budge, Gemini can hear a closed door.
Feelings are the other sore spot. Both signs can talk about an idea for hours and still skip the question of how they feel. A fight can turn into a debate, with a winner and no fix.

None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with these styles can use them. The signs give a name to a pattern. The fix lives in plain talk.
The rest of the chart counts for more
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Comparing two whole charts is called synastry. It looks at how each planet in one chart meets each planet in the other. Robert Hand’s 1975 book, Planets in Composite, goes further and blends two charts into one. Stephen Arroyo, in his 1975 book on the four elements, reads air as the element of the mind and of links between people.
For love, three points carry more weight than the Sun. The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. Venus shows what a person finds lovely. Mars shows how each one chases what they want. For this pair, add the rising sign. A Gemini Sun can have Aquarius rising, and an Aquarius Sun can have Gemini rising.
If a birthday falls near a sign change, check it first. The Sun enters Gemini on May 20 or 21 and leaves it around June 20 or 21. It enters Aquarius on January 19 or 20 and leaves it on February 18 or 19. Our Gemini sign page has more on the sign itself.
How we measured

For the birth shares, we used daily US Social Security birth counts for 2000 to 2014, published by FiveThirtyEight. We matched each day to the exact minute the Sun changed sign, in Central time, with astronomy-engine, an open source sky library. A second file, from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1994 to 2003, gives Gemini 8.59 percent and Aquarius 7.93 percent. The pair chance is then about 1 in 73. We assumed partners’ birth dates are not linked, which is what Voas found.
For Valentine’s Day, we compared each February 14 with the mean of the same weekday seven days before and seven days after. We summed the births over all years, then took the ratio. We did the same for February 13 and 15, October 31 and Memorial Day. Both birth files gave the same result in sign and size.
For the trine, we took the Sun’s place at each hour of the birth years, weighted by births. We built the spread of Gemini and Aquarius Sun degrees, and combined them to get the spread of the gap. Both files gave the same shares. A simple formula that treats degrees as flat gives 19, 36, 46 and 56 percent as well.
For the matched birthdays, we timed the Sun from each degree of Aquarius to the same degree of Gemini, for each year from 1990 to 2030. For rising times, we used the oblique ascension of each sign, with a tilt of 23.44 degrees for Earth’s axis. For the census, we read Table 7 in the paper by David Voas. The chance count for each cell is the row total times the column total, over the grand total. For the old rules, we read Ptolemy’s Book 1, chapters 13 to 18, in the Robbins version.
