A birth chart is a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life. The planets are the furniture. A ruler is the planet that owns a room, the way a landlord owns a flat.
Ten bodies get used in a modern chart. Only two of them are called lights: the Sun and the Moon. Ptolemy called them that in his Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD. Every other sign shares its ruler with a second sign. The Sun owns Leo alone. The Moon owns Cancer alone.
So the two signs look like twins on paper. In practice they behave in opposite ways. The reason is speed.
The Sun takes a year to cross all twelve signs. Leo season is defined by the Sun being in Leo. The ruler cannot be anywhere else. The answer is fixed at 100 percent by definition.
The Moon crosses all twelve signs in about 27 days. It changes sign every two and a half days. Cancer season lasts 31 days. The Moon laps the whole zodiac during it, and then some. Where it lands at any birth is close to a coin toss with twelve faces.
Where the Moon actually stands when the Sun is in Cancer

Read the spread, not the ranking. The whole table runs from 8.20 to 8.46 percent. A flat table would put every sign at 8.33 percent. This one is almost flat.
Short windows wobble. Over 1950 to 2010 alone, the same scan puts the Moon in Cancer at 8.30 percent and shuffles the rows. That is why this table uses 800 years. Even then, the rows sit within a quarter of a point of each other, so read the order lightly.
The point holds. The Moon that rules Cancer is at home for 8.20 percent of Cancers, about one in twelve. It even sits at the bottom of the table, level with Capricorn.

Compare that with the other signs, measured the same way from 1600 to 2400. Mercury is in Virgo for 49.50 percent of Virgos. Mars is in Aries for 12.27 percent of Aries births. Jupiter is in Sagittarius for 10.22 percent of Archers, over 67 full laps of Jupiter from 1607 to 2402. Saturn is in Capricorn for 10.15 percent of Capricorns, over 27 full laps of Saturn from 1613 to 2408. Cancer sits at the bottom of that list. Its ruler is the least likely of all to be home.
Cancer is the longest season of the twelve
Averaged over 1600 to 2400, the Sun spends 31.451 days in Cancer. That is the longest of the twelve signs. Capricorn is the shortest at 29.446 days. The gap between them is 2.005 days.
The reason sits in the shape of the Earth’s orbit. The orbit is not a circle. It is a slight oval. The Earth moves fastest when it is closest to the Sun, and slowest when it is furthest away.
The far point is called aphelion. I checked all 91 years from 1940 to 2030. Aphelion fell inside Cancer season in all 91 of them, with no exceptions. The date ran from July 2 to July 6.
So the Earth is at its slowest during Cancer season, every single year. A slower Earth makes the Sun appear to crawl through the sign. The season stretches. Capricorn holds the mirror image, because the near point of the orbit falls between January 1 and January 5, inside Capricorn season, every year.

The twelve lengths add up to 365.2427 days. The tropical year is 365.2422 days. The two agree to four decimal places, which tells me the measurement is sound.
One practical result follows. More babies are born under Cancer than under Capricorn, for orbital reasons alone. The twelve signs are not equal slices of the calendar. They are equal slices of the sky.
Cancer dates: June 21 is the worst day in the whole calendar
Almost every site prints the same range. Google’s own AI Overview prints it too. Cancer runs June 21 to July 22.
I tested that claim against the sky. I took every day from 1940 to 2030 and asked where the Sun really was at noon. Here is what the printed table gets wrong.

Look at June 21. The table calls you a Cancer. The sky disagrees 52 years out of 91. More than half the time, a person born on June 21 is still a Gemini.
That is the largest single-day failure in the whole zodiac table. Anyone born on June 21 needs a real chart, not a magazine range.
The other end is gentler but still real. Born on July 23, you are told you are a Leo. In 9 years out of 91 the Sun was still in Cancer at noon. Born on July 22, you are told Cancer, and in 7 years out of 91 the Sun had already moved to Leo.
Why the date slides from one year to the next
The Sun enters Cancer on three different calendar dates, depending on the year. That is unusual. Only five signs out of twelve spread over three dates.

The cause is the calendar, not the sky. A year is 365.2422 days long. Our calendar uses whole days and patches the gap with a leap day. So the same moment in the sky drifts across the date by about six hours a year, then jumps back.
There is a second reason this matters for Cancer in particular. The moment the Sun reaches 0 degrees of Cancer is the June solstice. That is not a convention someone chose. It is the definition. The tropical zodiac starts its four seasons at the two equinoxes and the two solstices.
So the start of Cancer season is the longest day in the northern half of the world. The sign begins at the exact turn of the year’s light. The twelve zodiac signs and their honest date ranges all hang from those same four points.

Two of those rows carry most of the weight. Cancer is a water sign, and water stands for feeling in a chart. Cancer is also cardinal, which is the modality that begins things. A cardinal water sign starts something by feeling its way in.
Four planets, four verdicts, and none of them are adjectives
Old astrology grades each planet in each sign. There are four grades. A planet at home is in its domicile. A planet at its best is exalted. A planet in the opposite sign to its home is in detriment, which older English calls exile. A planet opposite its exaltation is in fall.

Ptolemy set out this scheme in the Tetrabiblos. Vettius Valens used it in the same century, in his Anthology. William Lilly still used it unchanged in Christian Astrology, published in 1647. Fifteen centuries, one table, no edits to the Cancer row.
The logic is geometric, not poetic. Saturn owns Capricorn and Aquarius. Cancer sits opposite Capricorn. So Saturn in Cancer is as far from its own house as it gets. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, so Cancer is the opposite point, and Mars falls there.
Note the two words sitting side by side here. Saturn is in exile in Cancer. Mars is in fall in Cancer. Those are two different grades, and they are not the same thing.
Cancer traits, read from that structure
Most guides give you a list: sensitive, protective, moody, loyal. That list is not wrong. It is just unearned. Here is where the same traits come from.
The Moon is at home. The Moon in a chart stands for what a person needs, not what they want. It governs habit, memory and the reflex that fires before thought. When the Moon owns the room, needs run the show. That is the root of the reputation for feeling.
Jupiter is exalted. Jupiter stands for growth and generosity. Placed in Cancer it grows outward from a base. That is the root of the reputation for looking after people.

The old reading treated them as plain weakness. The two readings disagree, and it is worth knowing which one you are being handed.

Your Sun sign locks some other planets into a short list. Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun, because they orbit inside the Earth’s own orbit.

If your Sun is in Cancer, your Mercury is in Gemini, Cancer or Leo. Nine signs are ruled out by orbital geometry. Nothing else is possible, in any year, for anyone.

A Cancer Sun does not make Cancer rising any likelier
The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at birth. It changes every two hours. It depends on the time and the place of birth, not only the date.
I tested it on US births. Births were spread across the country by population, and across the clock by the real hour of birth in the CDC’s 2024 national birth records.

Having a Cancer Sun does not pull your ascendant toward Cancer. It pushes it slightly away. Cancer rising with a Cancer Sun means a birth close to sunrise. Between 3 and 7 a.m., US births run about a quarter below the hourly average.
The cause is simple. The Sun sign depends on the date. The ascendant depends on the clock and the map. On their own, those inputs do not drag each other: with births spread evenly over the clock, the two figures match, at 9.81 against 9.81 percent. The hospital clock is what tips them.
One detail is worth flagging. Cancer rising comes out at 9.9 percent of all US births, not 8.33 percent. Signs do not rise for equal lengths of time at northern latitudes. Cancer is one of the signs that takes longer to climb the horizon. That is geometry, and it has nothing to do with the Sun.
Cancer compatibility, without the scoreboard
Search results rank Cancer against the other eleven signs and hand out scores. Those scores rest on the Sun sign alone. The Sun is one body out of ten.
The traditional logic is easy to state. Water signs share an element with Cancer, so Scorpio and Pisces read as easy. Earth signs support water, so Taurus and Virgo read as steady. Cardinal signs share a modality and clash for the lead, so Aries, Libra and Capricorn read as friction.

How I measured all of this
Nothing above came from another website. Here is the method, so you can check it.
Positions come from a modern ephemeris, which is a table of where each body sat at each moment. I used the astronomy-engine library. The Sun’s position is read as ecliptic longitude, a single angle from 0 to 360 degrees. Sign number is that angle divided by 30.
For the date tests I used every day from 1940 to 2030, which is 91 years. I read the Sun at noon each day and compared it with the printed table.
For the season lengths I found the exact moment of each sign change by bisection, then averaged every season from 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window. A second route, the Swiss Ephemeris, gives the same averages to within a ten-thousandth of a day. The check that it worked is the total: 365.2427 days against a tropical year of 365.2422.
For the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars I did not draw random charts. I checked the sky every two hours from 1600 to 2400 and kept each moment with the Sun in Cancer. A short window can mislead, because some cycles take decades to even out. A second ephemeris, the Swiss Ephemeris, on a six hour step, gives the same figures to within three hundredths of a point.
For the ascendant I used US births. Places were weighted by population. Birth hours came from the CDC’s 2024 national birth records, month by month and weekday by weekday. I read the Sun and the horizon every four minutes of the clock, on a regular sample of days from 1940 to 2030, and ran it twice on different days.
Houses are whole sign houses. The zodiac is tropical, the one that starts at the March equinox. Percentages were checked to add to 100.
