Think of your birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one field of life. The planets are the furniture placed in them. Saturn is the heaviest item in the house, and it makes every room it enters slower and more serious.
This guide is about the 7th house — the room the tradition gives to the one person sitting across the table from you. A husband. A wife. A business partner. The other side in a lawsuit. It is the room of the named other, and of the deal you sign with them. Saturn here does one thing above all: it puts time on the clock before you say yes.
Who lives in the 7th house
The 1st house is you. Straight across the chart, the 7th house is not-you. That is the whole idea, and it is older than any modern book.
Vettius Valens, writing in the 2nd century, files marriage in the 7th place. So does the rest of the Greek tradition. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, 1647, keeps marriage there and adds a list that surprises people. He gives the 7th house to the wife or husband, to lawsuits, to thieves, and to what he calls open enemies.
Read that list again. The spouse and the open enemy share one room. That is not a joke in the tradition. Both are a person who stands in front of you, known by name, and both call for terms. What Saturn does at that table
Saturn is the planet of time, limits and cost. The old astrologers called it the great malefic, which meant the bringer of hard things. A fairer name today is the planet of the long bill.
Put Saturn in the room of the other person and three things follow.
The choosing gets slow. You do not fall into partnership. You walk into it, with questions.
The terms get real. Who does what. Who pays. What happens if this ends. Saturn wants that written down.

How much of the time this happens
We counted rather than guessed. Here is the method, so the number can be checked.
We drew 400,000 birth charts at random. Each draw picked a date and a clock time between 1 January 1950 and 1 January 2010. Longitude was random. Latitude was drawn to match where people live on Earth, so the sample leans north the way the world does. We used the tropical zodiac. We used whole sign houses, where each house is exactly one sign and the 1st house is the sign that was rising. Saturn’s place came from the astronomy-engine library.
Saturn fell in the 7th house in 33,127 of those 400,000 charts. That is 8.28 percent.
One chart in twelve is 8.33 percent, so the count lands where chance says it should. Saturn does not know where your ascendant is, and your ascendant does not know where Saturn is. The two are free of each other, so the twelve rooms share the total evenly. Across the twelve houses our counts ran from 8.22 to 8.46 percent, and they add to 100 percent exactly. That evenness is the check that the draw is sound.
So this is a common placement. Near 650 million people alive today were born with it.
The number that actually matters: how long Saturn stays
Here is the part no horoscope column gives you. If Saturn is going to sit in a room of your chart, the useful question is how long for.
We measured it. We tracked Saturn’s real position from 1900 to 2100, found every moment it crossed from one sign into the next, and pinned each crossing to the hour. Saturn goes backwards for part of most years, so it can enter a sign, back out, and come in again. We counted each stay from the first entry to the final exit. That gave 81 complete stays.
The average stay in one sign — which is one whole sign house — is 2.44 years.
The spread is wider than people expect. The shortest stay we measured was 2.12 years. The longest was 3.00 years. Saturn is not a metronome. Its path round the Sun is an oval, not a circle, so it speeds up when it is nearer and slows down when it is further away.
The check on all this is simple. Twelve houses at 2.44 years each gives 29.31 years for one full lap. Saturn’s real orbit takes 29.46 years. The two agree to within two months, which is what you want from a measurement of this kind.

Look at the gap between the rows. Gemini gets 2.12 years. Sagittarius gets 2.97. Saturn spends about forty percent longer in one than the other. If your 7th house is Sagittarius, the season of hard questions about your partnerships runs the better part of three years. If it is Gemini, it is over in two.
That is a practical thing to know, and it is why we measured it instead of repeating the round figure of two and a half years.
The old claim about a late marriage, examined
You will meet this claim everywhere: Saturn in the 7th house means you marry late, or you marry someone older.
It has a real source. Lilly reads Saturn in the 7th as a sign of delay and of an older or colder partner. That reading is four hundred years old and it is honest about what it is — a judgment drawn from Saturn’s nature, applied to the house of the spouse.
What it is not is a measurement. Nobody in 1647 had marriage records to check it against, and no modern study has found a clean effect. So here is the fair way to hold it. The tradition says delay. Our own count says the placement is as common as any other, at 8.28 percent, which means roughly one married person in twelve has it. If the claim were strong, it would be easy to see. It is not easy to see.
Read the old line as a description of a style, not a forecast of a date. Saturn in the 7th describes someone who takes partnership seriously enough to be slow about it. Some of those people marry at 24.
The hellenistic reading and the modern one
These are two different crafts, and it helps to know which one you are being handed.
The hellenistic reading is about outcome. Valens wants to know whether the marriage happens, whether it holds, and what the partner brings. He judges it from Saturn’s condition and from the ruler of the 7th sign. There is no inner life in it. It is a forecast about events.
The modern reading is about pattern. Liz Greene, whose work on Saturn from the mid-1970s underlies most of what gets written now, reads Saturn as the place where we were refused something early. In the 7th house that refusal lands on being met as an equal. Her line of thought turns the placement into a task: stop handing your own weight to the person across from you.
Neither reading cancels the other. The old one tells you what turns up. The new one tells you what you do with it.
What it looks like in a life
Partnership is a decision, not a drift. You do not slide into things. You weigh them, and the weighing takes months.
The contract gets read. All of it. Business partners with this placement are the ones who find the clause on page nine.
You pick older, or you pick steady. The type that lands is the one who shows up on time and pays their share. Charm alone does nothing here.
Being alone stings more than it should. This is the hard side. The 7th house is the room of the other, and Saturn puts a wall in it. Long single stretches are part of this placement, and they are felt as a verdict rather than a season.
You are good at terms. Divorce, dissolution, a partner buyout — the same care that made you slow makes you fair when it ends.
Saturn going backwards in the 7th
In our 33,127 charts, Saturn was retrograde 12,006 times, or 36.21 percent. Direct motion covers the remaining 63.79 percent, and the two add to 100.
Retrograde means the planet looks like it moves backwards against the stars. It does not really. Earth overtakes it on the inside of the track, the way a fast car seems to push a slow one backwards. Saturn is in this state about four and a half months a year, so one chart in three is the expected figure.
Astrologers read it as Saturn turned inward. The standard is still high. It is set by you, for you, rather than handed to you by a partner or a family.
How this differs from Saturn in the 8th house
The two rooms are neighbours and people run them together. They should not.
The 7th house ends when the contract is signed. It is about the choosing, the terms and the face across the table.

Near 29 that reads as the first real terms: a marriage, a business set up with someone, or the end of something that was never agreed properly. How to work with it
Write the terms down, early. This is your strength, so lead with it. A clear agreement made at the start is the single kindest thing you can do for a partnership.
Name the wall. The 7th house wall is usually the belief that needing someone is weak. Said out loud, it loses most of its grip.
Judge people on what they do twice. You already do this. Give it a number of months and a finish line, so the testing has an end.
Do not read a long single stretch as a sentence. Check the transit table above instead. Saturn moves out of every room it enters, and the date is known.
A word on house systems
Every figure here uses whole sign houses. In that system each house is exactly one sign, and the 1st house is the full sign that was rising at birth. It is the oldest system on record and it is what Valens used.
Other systems split the houses on other rules, and they split them at different degrees. A Saturn that falls in the 7th house under whole sign can fall in the 6th or the 8th under Placidus. Does this placement mean I will divorce?
No. Nothing in a single placement decides that. What this one describes is a person who is slow to commit and careful about terms, and both of those cut the other way. Astrology is a symbolic craft. It reads a tendency, not a court date.
