Picture your birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room holds one part of a life. The planets are the furniture. Saturn is the heaviest piece in the set. The room it sits in slows down, and nothing in it comes cheap.
This guide is about one room: the 2nd house. It is the room of what you earn, what you own, and what you count as worth having. Saturn in that room makes money slow. It also makes it stick.
The 2nd house, in plain words
The 1st house is you. The 2nd house is what you carry in your hands.
Money you earned yourself sits here. So do your things. Your wages, your savings, your tools, your food. The old word for it was substance. It is the room of the purse.
There is a second layer, and it matters more than the first. The 2nd house is also what you value. Two people can hold the same bank balance and count it in a wholly different way. One feels rich. One feels one bad week from ruin. That gap lives in this room.
Ptolemy, writing the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD, files goods and gain in this place. Vettius Valens, a century later, calls it livelihood. What Saturn does to a room
Saturn is the planet of walls, time and cost. It rules bone, not flesh. Three things happen in the room it enters.
A door goes on, and the door has a lock. Things inside take longer than they should. And what you build there holds.
Saturn needs about 29.5 years for one lap of the zodiac. That is one full round of your chart in a working life. It is the slowest planet the naked eye can see, and the old writers felt that weight. One more number is worth holding on to. Saturn stays in one room of your chart for 2.44 years on average. We measured 81 such stays between 1900 and 2100. The shortest run through a room was 2.12 years, in Gemini. The longest was 3.00 years, in Capricorn.
How many charts put Saturn in the 2nd house
We counted instead of guessing. Here is the method, so anyone can repeat it.
We drew 400,000 birth charts at random. Each draw picked a date and a clock time between 1 January 1950 and 1 January 2010. Longitude was random. Latitude was drawn to match where people live, so the sample leans north the way the world does. We used the tropical zodiac. We used whole sign houses, where each house is exactly one sign, and the 1st house is the sign that was rising. Saturn’s place came from the astronomy-engine library.
The count: Saturn sits in the 2nd house in 33,660 of those 400,000 charts. That is 8.41 percent.
One chart in twelve would be 8.33 percent. Our figure sits just above it. Across all twelve rooms the counts ran from 8.22 to 8.46 percent, and the twelve shares add to 100.00 percent. That flatness is the proof the draw is clean. The small lift above 8.33 has a cause: rising signs are not equally common at the latitudes where people live, and Saturn does not spend equal time in each sign. The two small tilts meet, and the result wobbles by a tenth of a point.
So this is not a rare chart. Close to one person in twelve has it. That is more than 600 million people alive today.
Saturn was moving backwards through the sky in 36.67 percent of those charts. That look is called retrograde. More on what it changes further down.
Saturn is at home here more than you would guess
Now the part that is worth the price of the page.
Every sign has a ruling planet. Saturn rules two of them: Capricorn and Aquarius. When a planet sits in a sign it rules, the tradition says it is at home. It has its own keys. It works with less friction.
Under whole sign houses, the sign your Saturn occupies is the sign of the house it sits in. So when Saturn lands in your 2nd house in Capricorn or Aquarius, two things line up at once. Saturn is in the room, and Saturn owns the room. It is both the guest and the landlord.
How many charts do that? Of the 33,660 charts with Saturn in the 2nd house, 6,680 have it in Capricorn or Aquarius. That is 19.85 percent. Close to one in five.
Blind chance would give 16.67 percent, since two signs out of twelve is one sixth. We are above that. A second draw with a fresh random seed gave 19.0 percent, so the honest reading is about 19 percent, not a sharp 19.85. The lift comes from Saturn’s own speed. Saturn moves slowest at the far end of its orbit, and that far end falls in the Capricorn part of the sky.
This has a plain meaning for a reader. If your Saturn is in your 2nd house, there is close to a one in five chance it is the strongest form of the placement rather than the hardest. Check the sign before you read a word of doom.
Which sign Saturn holds in the 2nd house

The twelve counts add back to 33,660 and the twelve shares add to 100.00 percent. Virgo leads at more than twice the share of Aries.
That gap looked too clean, so we tested it. Saturn made only about two laps of the zodiac in the sixty years we sampled. A sample that short keeps a memory of where Saturn happened to be. We ran the same draw again over 1900 to 2100, where Saturn makes nearly seven laps.
Part of the gap melted. Virgo fell from 11.24 to 9.66 percent. Scorpio fell from 9.96 to 8.94. So a good slice of the first result was an accident of the window we picked, and we are saying so rather than dressing it up.
Part of the gap held. Capricorn stayed high, at 10.75 percent over the long window. Taurus stayed at the bottom, at 5.56 percent. Those two are real. Saturn is slow near Capricorn and quick near Gemini and Cancer, which is why the long window keeps the same shape at both ends.
The old reading and the modern one
These are two different books, and mixing them is where bad readings start.
The old reading is about the purse. Valens and Lilly both treat the 2nd house as a report on your goods. Saturn there reads as a thin purse early on, a slow one, a purse filled by work rather than luck. Lilly would add that the goods last. There is no inner life in this reading at all.
The modern reading is about worth. Liz Greene, whose work on Saturn from the mid-1970s shapes most of what gets written now, reads Saturn as the place where we were told no. In the 2nd house that no lands on value. On being allowed to want things. On the quiet belief that you are one bad month from nothing, whatever the balance says.
Both readings are honest. They answer different questions. The old one tells you what will be in the purse. The new one tells you how it will feel to hold it.
What it looks like in a life
Money arrives late and stays. That is the short version.
People with this placement build slowly. The first job pays badly. The savings start small. Then the line goes up and it keeps going up, because nothing in it was borrowed and nothing in it was luck. At 50 they hold more than the friends who raced ahead at 25.
The cost is the fear. The 2nd house with Saturn in it runs a private ledger that never quite balances. Enough is a moving target. A reader with this chart can be safe on paper and scared in the body at the same time.
There is a gift buried in the cost. You will not be fooled. Schemes that catch other people do not catch you. You read the terms. You wait for proof. In a room that holds your wealth, that caution pays a wage of its own.
What retrograde Saturn changes here
Retrograde means the planet looked like it was going backwards from Earth. It is a trick of two moving viewpoints, not a real reversal, and Saturn wears it for about five months a year.
In our sample, 36.67 percent of charts with Saturn in the 2nd house had it retrograde. That is more than one in three, so this is a common case rather than a strange one.
The tradition turns the pressure inward. Outside rules about money become self-set rules. Nobody told you to live below your means. You decided it, and you police it harder than any parent would have.

The 2nd house is what you own. It is portable. It has a price tag. You could sell it today.

Price your own work. People with this chart undercharge for years. Raise the rate once a year on a set date, whether it feels earned or not.
Buy few things and buy them well. This placement is happy with one good coat. Lean into it rather than fighting it.
Wait for the back half. Saturn placements get better with age, and this one gets much better. What reads as lack at 25 reads as solid ground at 55.
